To evaluate the results of sacrospinous colpopexy surgery associated with anterior colporrhaphy for the treatment of womeN with post-hysterectomy vaginal vault prolapse. Methods This prospective study included 20women with vault prolapse, PelvicOrgan Prolapse Quantification System (POP-Q) stage ≥ 2, treated between January 2003 and February 2006, and evaluated in a follow-up review (more than one year later). Genital prolapse was evaluated qualitatively in stages and quantitatively in centimeters. Prolapse stage < 2 was considered to be the cure criterion. Statistical analysis was performed using the Wilcoxon test (paired samples) to compare the points and stages of prolapse before and after surgery. Results Evaluation of the vaginal vault after one year revealed that 95% of subjects were in stage zero and that 5% were in stage 1. For cystocele, 50% were in stage 1, 10% were in stage 0 (cured) and 40% were in stage 2. For rectocele, three women were in stage 1 (15%), one was in stage 2 (5%) and 16 had no further prolapse. The most frequent complication was pain in the right buttock, with remission of symptoms in all three cases three months after surgery. Conclusions In this retrospective study, the surgical correction of vault prolapse using a sacrospinous ligament fixation technique associatedwith anterior colporrhaphy proved effective in resolving genital prolapse. Despite the low complication rates, there was a high rate of cystocele, which may be caused by posterior vaginal shifting due to either the technique or an overvaluation by the POP-Q system. © 2016 by Thieme Publicações Ltda, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.382778

The alellopathic effects produced by five vegetables species: Avena sativa L., Lolium multiflorum Lam., Vicia sp., Medicago sativa L. and Trifolium repens L. were studied as to their effect on weeds. Individual plots were prepared, fertis. A high weed incidence was noted in the plots of Trifolized and sowed according to the usual recomendationlium repens L. and Medicago sativa L.; in the plots of Avena sativa L. and Lolium multiflorum Lam. , few weed specimens were found; the plot of Vicia sp. maintained an intermediate position. Based on the data obtained it is possible to recommend the two grass species as alellopathic plants to cover the soil. Vicia sp. is indicated when besides the reduction of weed plants, organic matter is desired for incorporation.

Nesting stingless bees in urban areas: a reevaluation after eight years

Studies of nesting ecology have proven to be extremely important for stingless bee conservation. These studies have rarely been conducted in urban landscapes, and even fewer have compared species diversity and abundances over time. We surveyed native stingless bee nests at the Federal University of Juiz de Fora campus in Minas Gerais, southeastern Brazil, from May 2008 to April 2009. We recorded the number of nests, nest height, species diversity, and nest substrate type (i.e., natural or artificial). We compared our results to those of a similar survey carried out in the same location eight years prior (2000/2001) in order to evaluate how urban expansion on campus has influenced the Meliponini bee community. Stingless bee abundance and richness were greater in the second survey. The use of natural substrates decreased, while the use of artificial substrates increased. This suggests that the increase in man-made structures on the UFJF campus has provided favorable sites for establishment of some stingless bee species

Monte Carlo study of the critical temperature for the planar rotator model with nonmagnetic impurities

We performed Monte Carlo simulations to calculate the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) temperature TBKTT_{BKT} for the two-dimensional planar rotator model in the presence of nonmagnetic impurity concentration (ρ)(\rho). As expected, our calculation shows that the BKT temperature decreases as the spin vacancies increase. There is a critical dilution ρc0.3\rho_c \approx 0.3 at which TBKT=0T_{BKT} =0. The effective interaction between a vortex-antivortex pair and a static nonmagnetic impurity is studied analytically. A simple phenomenological argument based on the pair-impurity interaction is proposed to justify the simulations.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures, Revetex fil

Evidence for a mixed mass composition at the `ankle' in the cosmic-ray spectrum

We report a first measurement for ultra-high energy cosmic rays of the correlation between the depth of shower maximum and the signal in the water Cherenkov stations of air-showers registered simultaneously by the fluorescence and the surface detectors of the Pierre Auger Observatory. Such a correlation measurement is a unique feature of a hybrid air-shower observatory with sensitivity to both the electromagnetic and muonic components. It allows an accurate determination of the spread of primary masses in the cosmic-ray flux. Up till now, constraints on the spread of primary masses have been dominated by systematic uncertainties. The present correlation measurement is not affected by systematics in the measurement of the depth of shower maximum or the signal in the water Cherenkov stations. The analysis relies on general characteristics of air showers and is thus robust also with respect to uncertainties in hadronic event generators. The observed correlation in the energy range around the `ankle' at lg(E/eV)=18.519.0\lg(E/{\rm eV})=18.5-19.0 differs significantly from expectations for pure primary cosmic-ray compositions. A light composition made up of proton and helium only is equally inconsistent with observations. The data are explained well by a mixed composition including nuclei with mass A>4A > 4. Scenarios such as the proton dip model, with almost pure compositions, are thus disfavoured as the sole explanation of the ultrahigh-energy cosmic-ray flux at Earth.Comment: Published version.
