    Get PDF
We demonstrate a framework that simplifies the performance evaluation of fault tolerant State Machine Replication in the permissioned model. ABCperf offers a message passing abstraction with eventual delivery on top of which interchangeable Atomic Broadcast algorithms and decentralized applications can be independently implemented. Varying network quality (i.e., latency, packet loss) and attacker behavior (i.e., omission faults) can be directly configured and are emulated by the ABCperf core. The framework allows the real-time manipulation of configuration options and visualizes performance indicators and statistics in real time

Retail, especially the supermarket, has been growing over the decades, along with this growth comes the demand of customers, who have become increasingly selective in relation to where they shop. In this context, it is important that retailers can obtain competitive advantages to attract and retain these customers, so that their perception of supermarkets may be a preponderant factor for this purpose. This work aimed to analyze the quality of the relationship between customers and the Bellavia supermarket, located at Brasilia/DF, based on the perception of consumers there. Using a self-administered questionnaire that had as factors to be perceived: the quality of the services, the quality of the interface with the client, the productivity of the employees, the knowledge of the team, the technological support that the company possesses, and the market knowledge that could translate into a possible competitive advantage. The results showed that, in general, customers are satisfied and have a good perception of the supermarket studied, but with a tendency of low perception of quality in the technological support and knowledge of the supermarket in relation to competitors

__________________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACTThe acute inflammatory action of thiopental intraperitoneal (IP) in rats was studied. Seventy two animals were divided in treated (40mg/kg of thiopental, 2.5% IP) and control (0.25ml of saline solution IP) rats. In order to evaluate the inflammatory process, peritoneal fluid was taken at 2h, 6h, 12h, 24h e 48h after drug administration. The animals were anesthetized with isoflurane and submitted to euthanasia through cervical vessels section. Five millilitres of heparinized saline solution were injected IP, homogenized by abdomen massage and then withdrawn. Plasma protein (PP), global leukocyte count (GLC) and differential leukocyte count (DLC) were analysed. No difference in PP intergroup at any moment was observed, but at 2h. Intragroup, PP was higher between 6 and 12h in both groups. There was no statistical difference of GLC intergroup. There was a difference (P<0.05) of GLC results between groups at 6h post-injection. There was a similar pattern of DLC intergroups, except eosinophil cells at 6h. Intragroup cell counts of neutrophils were different (P<0.05) in both groups at 6 and 12h. The acute inflammatory reaction observed was probably trigged by the mechanically action of injection. The eosinophilia observed in treated group after 6h suggests some irritant action of thiopental

Nowadays, the growing complexity of embedded systems demands for configurability, variability and reuse. Conditional compilation and object-orientation are two of the most applied approaches in the management of system variability. While the former increases the code management complexity, the latter leverages the needed modularity and adaptability to simplify the development of reusable and customizable software at the expense of performance and memory penalty. This paper shows how C++ TMP (Template Metaprogramming) can be applied to manage the variability of an object-oriented operating system and at the same time get ride out of the performance and memory footprint overhead. In doing so, it will be statically generated only the desired functionalities, thus ensuring that code is optimized and adjusted to application requirements and hardware resources.Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT

Mechanical alterations in airway smooth muscle after interaction with indoor pollutant - A\ud mathematical model

    Get PDF
The viscoelasticity of mammalian lung is determined by the mechanical properties and structural regulation of the airway smooth muscle (ASM). The exposure to polluted air may deteriorate these properties with harmful consequences to individual health. Formaldehyde (FA) is an important indoor pollutant found among volatile organic compounds. This pollutant permeates through the smooth muscle tissue forming covalent bonds between proteins in the extracellular matrix and intracellular protein structure changing mechanical properties of ASM and inducing asthma symptoms, such as airway hyperresponsiveness, even at low concentrations. In the experimental scenario, the mechanical effect of FA is the stiffening of the tissue, but the mechanism behind this effect is not fully w1derstood. Thus, the aim of this study is to reproduce the mechanical behavior of the ASM, such as contraction and stretching, under FA action or not. For this, it was created a two-dimensional viscoelastic network model based on Voronoi tessellation solved using Runge-Kutta method of fourth order. The equilibrium configuration was reached when the forces in different parts of the network were equal. This model simulates the mechanical behavior of ASM through of a network of dashpots and springs. This dashpot-spring mechanical coupling mimics the composition of the actomyosin machinery of ASM through the contraction of springs to a minimum length. We hypothesized that formation of covalent bonds, due to the FA action, can be represented in the model by a simple change in the elastic constant of the springs, while the action of methacholinc (MCh) reduce the equilibrium length of the spring. A sigmoid curve of tension as a function of MCh doses was obtained, showing increased tension when the muscle strip was exposed to FA. Our simulations suggest that FA, at a concentration of 0.1 ppm, can affect the elastic properties of the smooth muscle fibers by a factor of 120%. We also analyze the dynamic mechanical properties, observing the viscous and elastic behavior of the network. Finally, the proposed model, although simple, ir1corporates the phenomenology of both MCh and FA and reproduces experirnental results observed with ir1 vitro exposure of smooth muscle to .FA. Thus, this new mechanical approach incorporates several well know features of the contractile system of the cells ir1 a tissue level model. The model can also be used in different biological scales.CNPqFAPES
