Preferential expression of the transcription coactivator HTIF1alpha gene in acute myeloid leukemia and MDS-related AML
HTIF1α, a transcription coactivator which is able to mediate RARα activity and functionally interact with PML, is encoded by a gene on chromosome 7q32–34, which is a critical region in acute myeloid leukemias (AML). With the assumption that this gene may be related to AML, we investigated the HTIF1α DNA structure and RNA expression in leukemic cells from 36 M1–M5 AML patients (28 ‘de novo’ and eight ‘secondary’ to myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS)). Abnormal HTIF1α DNA fragments were never found, whereas loss of HTIF1α DNA was observed in the patients with chromosome 7q32 deletion and translocation, and in one case without detectable chromosome 7 abnormality. HTIF1α RNA was found in acute myelocytic leukemic blasts, and was almost undetectable in normal mononuclear cells. The expression varied among the patients: higher in M1 to M3 subtypes, with the highest values in M1; low levels were constantly observed in M4 and M5 AML. In addition, HTIF1α was significantly overexpressed in MDS-related AML (MDR-AML), but not in MDS. We also found that HTIF1α expression was high in myeloid cell lines. In myeloblastic HL60 and promyelocytic NB4 cells, induced to differentiate along the monocytic–macrophage pathway by TPA or vitamin D3, HTIF1α expression decreased, whereas it was maintained at high levels on induction to granulocytic differentiation by RA or DMSO. In K562 cells, HTIF1α RNA levels did not change after hemin-induced erythroid differentiation. These results suggest that HTIF1α could play a role in myeloid differentiation, being distinctly regulated in hematopoietic lineages
The GRAAL high resolution BGO calorimeter and its energy calibration and monitoring system
We describe the electromagnetic calorimeter built for the GRAAL apparatus at
the ESRF. Its monitoring system is presented in detail. Results from tests and
the performance obtained during the first GRAAL experiments are given. The
energy calibration accuracy and stability reached is a small fraction of the
intrinsic detector resolution.Comment: 19 pages, 14 figures, submitted to Nuclear Instruments and Method
Two loop results from one loop computations and non perturbative solutions of exact evolution equations
A nonperturbative method is proposed for the approximative solution of the
exact evolution equation which describes the scale dependence of the effective
average action. It consists of a combination of exact evolution equations for
independent couplings with renormalization group improved one loop expressions
of secondary couplings. Our method is illustrated by an example: We compute the
beta-function of the quartic coupling lambda of an O(N) symmetric scalar field
theory to order lambda^3 as well as the anomalous dimension to order lambda^2
using only one loop expressions and find agreement with the two loop
perturbation theory. We also treat the case of very strong coupling and confirm
the existence of a "triviality bound".Comment: 32 pages, HD-THEP-94-3, replaced because: lines too long, blank line
Agronomic characteristics, isoflavone content and Kunitz trypsin inhibitorof vegetable soybean genotypes.
Five vegetable soybean genotypes were evaluated for agronomic characteristics, functional and antinutritional properties. The experiments were conducted in the field, in the School of Agricultural and Veterinary Sciences, in Jaboticabal, São Paulo State, Brazil. The experimental design was a randomized block design with five treatments (genotypes) and four replications. The genotypes JLM003, JLM004, JLM010, JLM024 and JLM030 were evaluated in the following caharacteristics: number of pods per plant, number of seeds per pod, fresh weight of pods per plant (g), fresh weight of 100 seeds (g), estimated total yield of immature seeds (kg ha-1), moisture content, proteins, lipids, ash, carbohydrates, isoflavones and Kunitz trypsin inhibitor. In the assessment of the major agronomic traits, in the conditions of this study, the genotype JLM010 was the most recommended for the region of Jaboticabal. This genotype showed better agronomic characteristics of production as a vegetable, producing 136.04 g of fresh weight of pods per plant, 92.52 g of fresh weight/100 seeds and 11.12 t/ha of total immature seeds, and better functional properties.

Reduced tubulin tyrosination as an early marker of mercury toxicity in differentiating N2a cells
The aims of this work were to compare the effects of methyl mercury chloride and Thimerosal on neurite/process outgrowth and microtubule proteins in differentiating mouse N2a neuroblastoma and rat C6 glioma cells. Exposure for 4 h to sublethal concentrations of both compounds inhibited neurite outgrowth to a similar extent in both cells lines compared to controls. In the case of N2a cells, this inhibitory effect by both compounds was associated with a fall in the reactivity of western blots of cell extracts with monoclonal antibody T1A2, which recognises C-terminally tyrosinated α-tubulin. By contrast, reactivity with monoclonal antibody B512 (which recognises total α-tubulin) was unaffected at the same time point. These findings suggest that decreased tubulin tyrosination represents a neuron-specific early marker of mercury toxicity associated with impaired neurite outgrowth
Challenges and Requirements for Introducing Impairment-awareness into the Management and Control Planes of ASON/GMPLS WDM Networks
The absence of electrical regenerators in transparent WDM networks significantly contributes to reduce the overall network cost. In transparent WDM networks, a proper resource allocation requires that the presence of physical impairments in Routing and Wavelength Assignment (RWA) and lightpath provisioning be taken into account. In this article a centralized, a hybrid centralized-distributed and two distributed approaches that integrate information about most relevant physical impairments in RWA and
lightpath provisioning are presented and assessed. Both centralized and hybrid approaches perform a centralized path computation at the management-plane level, utilizing physical
impairment information, while the lightpath provisioning is done by the management plane or the control plane, respectively. The distributed approaches fall entirely within the scope of the
ASON/GMPLS control plane. For these two approaches, we provide functional requirements, architectural functional blocks, and protocol extensions for implementing either an impairment-aware real-time RWA, or a lighpath provisioning based on impairment-aware signaling
