    Clonal chromosomal mosaicism and loss of chromosome Y in elderly men increase vulnerability for SARS-CoV-2

    The pandemic caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2, COVID-19) had an estimated overall case fatality ratio of 1.38% (pre-vaccination), being 53% higher in males and increasing exponentially with age. Among 9578 individuals diagnosed with COVID-19 in the SCOURGE study, we found 133 cases (1.42%) with detectable clonal mosaicism for chromosome alterations (mCA) and 226 males (5.08%) with acquired loss of chromosome Y (LOY). Individuals with clonal mosaic events (mCA and/or LOY) showed a 54% increase in the risk of COVID-19 lethality. LOY is associated with transcriptomic biomarkers of immune dysfunction, pro-coagulation activity and cardiovascular risk. Interferon-induced genes involved in the initial immune response to SARS-CoV-2 are also down-regulated in LOY. Thus, mCA and LOY underlie at least part of the sex-biased severity and mortality of COVID-19 in aging patients. Given its potential therapeutic and prognostic relevance, evaluation of clonal mosaicism should be implemented as biomarker of COVID-19 severity in elderly people.     INTRODUCTION: Ventilator-Associated Pneumonia (NAV) is the most frequent nosocomial infection and the main cause of the death in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). It is prevention should be a priority, since it could reduce morbidity and mortality, the costs of care and improve patient safety. The purpose of the study was to identify the level of knowledge and practice of the nursing staff of the Intensive Care Unit to prevent NAV. MATERIAL AND METHODS:The study design was quantitative, descriptive, cross sectional. The sample was of 48 nurses who work in the ICU of two Hospitals of High Specialty of Villahermosa, Tabasco. The sampling was non probabilistic for convenience RESULTS: The level of knowledge was medium in 56.3% of nursing staff, 87.5% of staff are less aware of the implications of using closed aspiration systems and open systems. Regarding the practice of nursing staff, 95.8% showed adequate practice; however, 58.2% of the staff performed hygiene of the oral cavity with chlorhexidine less frequently. 52.0% of nurses have an average level of knowledge and the practice to prevent NAV is adequate. CONCLUSIONS: It is recommended the implementation of actions aimed at strengthening theoretical knowledge in nursing staff, through training and updating, the implementation of prevention guidelines or protocols, helping to increase knowledge and modify the practice of nursing staff.INTRODUCCIÓN: La Neumonía Asociada al Ventilador (NAV) es la infección nosocomial más frecuente y la principal causa de muerte en la Unidad de Cuidados Intensivos (UCI). Su prevención debería ser una prioridad, ya que podría disminuir morbimortalidad, costos de la atención y mejorar la seguridad del paciente. El propósito del estudio fue identificar el nivel de conocimiento y la práctica del personal de enfermería de la Unidad de Cuidados Intensivos para prevenir la NAV. MATERIAL Y MÉTODOS: El diseño del estudio fue cuantitativo, descriptivo, de corte transversal. La muestra la conformaron 48 enfermeras (os) que laboran en la UCI de dos Hospitales de Alta Especialidad de Villahermosa, Tabasco. El muestreo fue no probabilístico por conveniencia. RESULTADOS: El nivel de conocimiento fue medio en el 56.3% del personal de enfermería, el 87.5% del personal tiene menor conocimiento en las implicaciones del uso de sistemas de aspiración cerrados y sistemas abiertos. Respecto a la práctica del personal de enfermería, se encontró que un 95.8% manifestó una práctica adecuada, sin embargo, un 58.2% del personal realiza con menor frecuencia la higiene de la cavidad oral con clorohexidina. El 52% del personal de enfermería tienen un nivel de conocimiento medio y la práctica realizada para prevenir la NAV es adecuada. CONCLUSIONES: Se recomienda la implementación de acciones dirigidas a fortalecer el conocimiento teórico en el personal de enfermería, mediante capacitación y actualización, la implementación de guías o protocolos de prevención, ayudando a incrementar los conocimientos y modificar la práctica del personal de enfermería

    Long-Term Outcomes After Autologous Versus Allogeneic Stem Cell Transplantation in Molecularly-Stratified Patients With Intermediate Cytogenetic Risk Acute Myeloid Leukemia: A PETHEMA Study.

    Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) with intermediate risk cytogenetics (IRcyto) comprises a variety of biological entities with distinct mutational landscapes that translate into differential risks of relapse and prognosis. Optimal postremission therapy choice in this heterogeneous patient population is currently unsettled. In the current study, we compared outcomes in IRcyto AML recipients of autologous (autoSCT) (n = 312) or allogeneic stem cell transplantation (alloSCT) (n = 279) in first complete remission (CR1). Molecular risk was defined based on CEBPA, NPM1, and FLT3-ITD mutational status, per European LeukemiaNet 2017 criteria. Five-year overall survival (OS) in patients with favorable molecular risk (FRmol) was 62% (95% confidence interval [CI], 50-72) after autoSCT and 66% (95% CI, 41-83) after matched sibling donor (MSD) alloSCT (P = .68).     A search for scalar particles decaying via narrow resonances into two photons in the mass range 65–600 GeV is performed using 20.3fb120.3\text{}\text{}{\mathrm{fb}}^{-1} of s=8TeV\sqrt{s}=8\text{}\text{}\mathrm{TeV} pppp collision data collected with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The recently discovered Higgs boson is treated as a background. No significant evidence for an additional signal is observed. The results are presented as limits at the 95% confidence level on the production cross section of a scalar boson times branching ratio into two photons, in a fiducial volume where the reconstruction efficiency is approximately independent of the event topology. The upper limits set extend over a considerably wider mass range than previous searches

Differential cross sections are reported as a function of Higgs boson transverse momentum, Higgs boson rapidity, number of jets in the event, and transverse momentum of the leading jet. The total production cross section is determined to be σppH=33.0±5.3(stat)±1.6(sys)pb\sigma_{pp \to H} = 33.0 \pm 5.3 \, ({\rm stat}) \pm 1.6 \, ({\rm sys}) \mathrm{pb}.     Search for Higgs and ZZ Boson Decays to J/ψγJ/\psi\gamma and Υ(nS)γ\Upsilon(nS)\gamma with the ATLAS Detector

    A search for the decays of the Higgs and ZZ bosons to J/ψγJ/\psi\gamma and Υ(nS)γ\Upsilon(nS)\gamma (n=1,2,3n=1,2,3) is performed with pppp collision data samples corresponding to integrated luminosities of up to 20.3fb120.3\mathrm{fb}^{-1} collected at s=8TeV\sqrt{s}=8\mathrm{TeV} with the ATLAS detector at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. No significant excess of events is observed above expected backgrounds and 95% CL upper limits are placed on the branching fractions. In the J/ψγJ/\psi\gamma final state the limits are 1.5×1031.5\times10^{-3} and 2.6×1062.6\times10^{-6} for the Higgs and ZZ bosons, respectively, while in the Υ(1S,2S,3S)γ\Upsilon(1S,2S,3S)\,\gamma final states the limits are (1.3,1.9,1.3)×103(1.3,1.9,1.3)\times10^{-3} and (3.4,6.5,5.4)×106(3.4,6.5,5.4)\times10^{-6}, respectively
