    Gestión del manejo integral de los desechos sólidos en el hospital Alemán Nicaragüense de Managua

El objetivo general propuesto fue un sistema de gestión de los desechos sólidos hospitalarios (comunes y peligrosos sin incluir los radiactivos), generados en el HAN. Se efectuó la cuantificación de los DSH durante el periodo de muestreo, elaboración de un listado de los DSH, se identificaron problemas existentes en el manejo actual de éstos desechos, y se elaboró una propuesta de plan de manejo seguro de los mismos, la que contempla: Plan integral de manejo de DSH que incluye todos los desechos (comunes y peligrosos, sin incluir los radiactivos), una propuesta de equipo adecuado para recolección y transporte interno y externo de DSH; propuesta de construcción de depósito para almacenamiento temporal interno de los DSH; y una propuesta de sistema de tratamiento y disposición final alternativo para los DSH/P generados en el HAN.Palabras Clave: desechos sólidos hospitalarios; gestión; manejoDOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.5377/nexo.v23i2.238Nexo: Revista Científica Vol. 23, No. 02, pp.53-61/Nov 2010

    Se presenta el resultado de un estudio para determinar expresiones analíticas que relacionan latensión de chispa (V 50y) del aislamiento bajo el aire con la distancia de separación interelectródica(hasta 85 cm). utilizando impulsos atmosféricos normalizados. Estas expresiones podrán serempleadas en el sistema eléctrico colombiano a las condiciones atmosféricas del sitio de ubicaciónde los equipos y aplicables a distancias cortas. Se uülizó la metodología IIUp and down" paradeterminar la V 5O% y el método de la máxJma verosimilitud para su tratamiento estadístico. Elestudio se efectuó utilizando las configuraciones punta-punta y punta placa normalizadas.  We present the results of a study to determine analytical expressions that relate the spark voltage (V50%) of the insulation under the air to the inter electronic separation distance (up to 85 cm). Using standard atmospheric pulses. These expressions may be used in the Colombian electrical system to the atmospheric conditions of the location of the equipment and applicable to short distances. The "Up and down" methodology was used to determine the VJO% and the maximum likelihood method for its statistical treatment. The study was carried out using the tip-tip and tip-standard configurations

    Mechanical properties of freely suspended semiconducting graphene-like layers based on MoS2

    We fabricate freely suspended nanosheets of molybdenum disulphide (MoS2) which are characterized by quantitative optical microscopy and high-resolution friction force microscopy. We study the elastic deformation of freely suspended nanosheets of MoS2 using an atomic force microscope. The Young's modulus and the initial pre-tension of the nanosheets are determined by performing a nanoscopic version of a bending test experiment. MoS2 sheets show high elasticity and an extremely high Young's modulus (0.30 TPa, 50% larger than steel). These results make them a potential alternative to graphene in applications requiring flexible semiconductor materials

    Vortex states in 2D superconductor at high magnetic field in a periodic pinning potential

    The effect of a periodic pinning array on the vortex state in a 2D superconductor at low temperatures is studied within the framework of the Ginzburg-Landau approach. It is shown that attractive interaction of vortex cores to a commensurate pin lattice stabilizes vortex solid phases with long range positional order against violent shear fluctuations. Exploiting a simple analytical method, based on the Landau orbitals description, we derive a rather detailed picture of the low temperatures vortex state phase diagram. It is predicted that for sufficiently clean samples application of an artificial periodic pinning array would enable one to directly detect the intrinsic shear stiffness anisotropy characterizing the ideal vortex lattice.Comment: 8 pages, 5 figure

    Noiseless nonreciprocity in a parametric active device

    Nonreciprocal devices such as circulators and isolators belong to an important class of microwave components employed in applications like the measurement of mesoscopic circuits at cryogenic temperatures. The measurement protocols usually involve an amplification chain which relies on circulators to separate input and output channels and to suppress backaction from different stages on the sample under test. In these devices the usual reciprocal symmetry of circuits is broken by the phenomenon of Faraday rotation based on magnetic materials and fields. However, magnets are averse to on-chip integration, and magnetic fields are deleterious to delicate superconducting devices. Here we present a new proposal combining two stages of parametric modulation emulating the action of a circulator. It is devoid of magnetic components and suitable for on-chip integration. As the design is free of any dissipative elements and based on reversible operation, the device operates noiselessly, giving it an important advantage over other nonreciprocal active devices for quantum information processing applications.Comment: 17 pages, 4 figures + 12 pages Supplementary Informatio

    Two-dimensional materials for improved resolution in total internal reflection fluorescence microscopy

    We propose and theoretically demonstrate that two-dimensional materials at the interface between glass and water layers in a total internal reflection fluorescence microscopy (TIRFM) technique can decrease the detection volume of a target sample, and hence improve the resolution of the obtained image. In particular, we calculate the change in fluorescence characteristics of the fluorophore labels on a target sample when monolayer black phosphorus, hexagonal boron nitride, and graphene are added at the glass-water interface of a TIRFM structure. We also calculate the change in the detection volume due to the presence of two-dimensional materials, and when the polarization, wavelength, and angle of the incident light vary. We find \gtrsim 10% and \gtrsim 5% decrease in the detection volume when monolayer black phosphorus and hexagonal boron nitride are used, respectively, and up to  ~50% decrease when monolayer graphene is used. The proposed use of the two-dimensional material will significantly improve the resolution of TIRFM technique, and hence facilitate the study of nanoscale biological features

    Strongly anisotropic spin relaxation in graphene/transition metal dichalcogenide heterostructures at room temperature

    Graphene has emerged as the foremost material for future two-dimensional spintronics due to its tuneable electronic properties. In graphene, spin information can be transported over long distances and, in principle, be manipulated by using magnetic correlations or large spin-orbit coupling (SOC) induced by proximity effects. In particular, a dramatic SOC enhancement has been predicted when interfacing graphene with a semiconducting transition metal dechalcogenide, such as tungsten disulphide (WS2_2). Signatures of such an enhancement have recently been reported but the nature of the spin relaxation in these systems remains unknown. Here, we unambiguously demonstrate anisotropic spin dynamics in bilayer heterostructures comprising graphene and WS2_2. By using out-of-plane spin precession, we show that the spin lifetime is largest when the spins point out of the graphene plane. Moreover, we observe that the spin lifetime varies over one order of magnitude depending on the spin orientation, indicating that the strong spin-valley coupling in WS2_2 is imprinted in the bilayer and felt by the propagating spins. These findings provide a rich platform to explore coupled spin-valley phenomena and offer novel spin manipulation strategies based on spin relaxation anisotropy in two-dimensional materials

    CD69 is a TGF-β/1α,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3 target gene in monocytes

    CD69 is a transmembrane lectin that can be expressed on most hematopoietic cells. In monocytes, it has been functionally linked to the 5-lipoxygenase pathway in which the leukotrienes, a class of highly potent inflammatory mediators, are produced. However, regarding CD69 gene expression and its regulatory mechanisms in monocytes, only scarce data are available. Here, we report that CD69 mRNA expression, analogous to that of 5-lipoxygenase, is induced by the physiologic stimuli transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β) and 1α,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3 (1α,25(OH)2D3) in monocytic cells. Comparison with T- and B-cell lines showed that the effect was specific for monocytes. CD69 expression levels were increased in a concentration-dependent manner, and kinetic analysis revealed a rapid onset of mRNA expression, indicating that CD69 is a primary TGF-β/1α,25(OH)2D3 target gene. PCR analysis of different regions of the CD69 mRNA revealed that de novo transcription was initiated and proximal and distal parts were induced concomitantly. In common with 5-lipoxygenase, no activation of 0.7 kb or ~2.3 kb promoter fragments by TGF-β and 1α,25(OH)2D3 could be observed in transient reporter assays for CD69. Analysis of mRNA stability using a transcription inhibitor and a 3′UTR reporter construct showed that TGF-β and 1α,25(OH)2D3 do not influence CD69 mRNA stability. Functional knockdown of Smad3 clearly demonstrated that upregulation of CD69 mRNA, in contrast to 5-LO, depends on Smad3. Comparative studies with different inhibitors for mitogen activated protein kinases (MAPKs) revealed that MAPK signalling is involved in CD69 gene regulation, whereas 5-lipoxygenase gene expression was only partly affected. Mechanistically, we found evidence that CD69 gene upregulation depends on TAK1-mediated p38 activation. In summary, our data indicate that CD69 gene expression, conforming with 5-lipoxygenase, is regulated monocyte-specifically by the physiologic stimuli TGF-β and 1α,25(OH)2D3 on mRNA level, although different mechanisms account for the upregulation of each gene

    Anisotropic vortex pinning in superconductors with a square array of rectangular submicron holes

    We investigate vortex pinning in thin superconducting films with a square array of rectangular submicron holes ("antidots"). Two types of antidots are considered: antidots fully perforating the superconducting film, and "blind antidots", holes that perforate the film only up to a certain depth. In both systems, we observe a distinct anisotropy in the pinning properties, reflected in the critical current Ic, depending on the direction of the applied electrical current: parallel to the long side of the antidots or perpendicular to it. Although the mechanism responsible for the effect is very different in the two systems, they both show a higher critical current and a sharper IV-transition when the current is applied along the long side of the rectangular antidots

    Mixtures of independent component analyzers for EEG prediction

    This paper presents a new application of independent component analysis mixture modeling (ICAMM) for prediction of electroencephalographic (EEG) signals. Demonstrations in prediction of missing EEG data in a working memory task using classic methods and an ICAMM-based algorithm are included. The performance of the methods is measured by using four error indicators: signal-to-interference (SIR) ratio, Kullback-Leibler divergence, correlation at lag zero and mean structural similarity index. The results show that the ICAMM-based algorithm outperforms the classical spherical splines method which is commonly used in EEG signal processing.
