Proximate and Mineral profile of Quinoa (Chenopodium quinoa), and kiwicha (Amaranthus caudatus) consumed in north of Argentina
Quinoa (Chenopodium quinoa), and kiwicha (Amaranthus caudatus) are pseudo-cereals largely consumed in North of Argentina. They gained special attention by scientific community in part due to high nutritional value. Therefore the nutrient analysis with the purpose to be included in Argentinean Food Composition Databank is urgent. In this work proximal and mineral profile of Quinoa consumed in the North of Argentina was determined and reported for the first time, for the purpose to be included in national Food Composition Databank and disseminated through EuroFIR e-search platform. Ash, Moisture, Dietary Fibre, Protein, and Fat content were determined by AOAC methods and Calcium, Copper, Iron, Sodium, Potassium, Phosphorus, Magnesium, were analyzed by or ICP-OES and Selenium by ICP-MS. The values were obtained applying quality criteria as defined by EuroFIR guidelines for laboratory analysis. This required criteria on sample handling, an appropriate analytical method in terms of precision and accuracy, limit of quantification selectivity, and an effective internal and external quality control program including appropriate use of Certified Reference Materials and participation in adequate Proficiency Testing Schemes carried out by laboratories hold ISO/EN 17025. Guidelines for laboratory performance are paramount to guarantee the acceptability of values in LATINFOODS and others Food Data Organizations. This provides the necessary information to the users of Food Composition Databanks who wish to have an overview of the parameters, which influence the estimation of nutrient intake, and may affect the diet-disease relationship. This work was completed on behalf of the EuroFIR Nexus consortium and funded under the EU 7th Framework Food Quality and Safety Programm

Although AD neuropathological hallmarks are extracellular amyloid plaques and intracellular tau tangles, the best correlate of disease progression is synapse loss. What causes synapse loss has been the focus of several researchers in the AD field. Synapses become dysfunctional before plaques and tangles form. Studies based on early-onset familial AD (eFAD) models have supported that synaptic transmission is depressed by β-amyloid (Aβ) triggered mechanisms. Since eFAD is rare, affecting only 1% of patients, research has shifted to the study of the most common late-onset AD (LOAD). Intracellular trafficking has emerged as one of the pathways of LOAD genes. Few studies have assessed the impact of trafficking LOAD genes on synapse dysfunction. Since endocytic traffic is essential for synaptic function, we reviewed Aβ-dependent and independent mechanisms of the earliest synaptic dysfunction in AD. We have focused on the role of intraneuronal and secreted Aβ oligomers, highlighting the dysfunction of endocytic trafficking as an Aβ-dependent mechanism of synapse dysfunction in AD. Here, we reviewed the LOAD trafficking genes APOE4, ABCA7, BIN1, CD2AP, PICALM, EPH1A, and SORL1, for which there is a synaptic link. We conclude that in eFAD and LOAD, the earliest synaptic dysfunctions are characterized by disruptions of the presynaptic vesicle exo- and endocytosis and of postsynaptic glutamate receptor endocytosis. While in eFAD synapse dysfunction seems to be triggered by Aβ, in LOAD, there might be a direct synaptic disruption by LOAD trafficking genes. To identify promising therapeutic targets and biomarkers of the earliest synaptic dysfunction in AD, it will be necessary to join efforts in further dissecting the mechanisms used by Aβ and by LOAD genes to disrupt synapses.publishersversionpublishe
12th IFDC 2017 special issue – Iodine, selenium and iron contents in Portuguese key foods as consumed
Iodine, selenium and iron are micronutrients essential for thyroid hormone synthesis causing their low plasma
levels an additional risk of autoimmune thyroid diseases. A Portuguese TDS pilot study representative of diets in Portugal was carried out, since foods are the main natural sources of these micronutrients. Six hundred and
twenty-four samples were collected based on local markets and later analysed in pools of ten meat samples,
twenty-seven fish, nine chicken eggs and six cow dairy products. The iodine and selenium contents were determined using ICP-MS after alkaline (iodine) or acid digestion (selenium) and iron by ICP-OES after acid digestion.
The highest content of three oligoelements was detected in fish. Meat had lower iodine content and the
dairy products lower selenium and iron levels. Sardine presented significant different levels in summer and
winter for iodine, and in summer and autumn for selenium, mackerel had diverse contents of iron in summer and autumn. The contribution of salmon and milk for iodine RNI was around 40%, for children and adults. Shrimp is also the food with more selenium, exceeding 1.5 times the % RNI for children and adults females, while iron maximum contribution was observed in meat for children and adult males.Highlights: The highest contents in the three oligoelements were in fish group; The lowest contents were in meat (I) and dairy products (Se and Fe); Larges variations were observed for iodine and selenium contents in national FCDBs; Iodine accounting for 40% RNI and selenium exceeds 1.5 times RNI; Iron maximum contribution for RNI was in bovine meat. The scientific work was funded by the Project WHO Collaborating Centre funded by the Instituto Nacional de Saúde Doutor Ricardo Jorge, I.P. Assessment of salt and sugar content in meals served in public administration cafeterias: a joint study between National Institute of Health Dr Ricardo Jorge of Portugal and Social Services of Public Administration in Portugal
e açúcar nas refeições dos SSAP.The food served in cafeterias is a public health issue that has gained
importance in collective nutrition due to the high number of users. In
Portugal, a great effort has been made to reduce the salt and sugar
content in food. However, among the Portuguese, there is still a family
habit associated with their high consumption, which has made it difficult to reduce these two compounds, by regulatory authorities and the
industry, in ready-to-eat meals. In this way, knowledge of the salt and
total sugar levels in the meals served and their comparison with the values recommended by the World Health Organization ( WHO ) is essential
to plan preventive measures to be taken by the various stakeholders. In
this work, the salt and total sugar content in menus served in cafeterias of the Social Services of Public Administration (SSAP) in Portugal
were studied. 62 samples of soups and main dishes were collected and
later analyzed by normalized methods, for the total sugar and salt content. It was found that the average value of salt per menu corresponds
to about 50% of the recommended daily allowance ( RDA ) by the WHO
and that the value of total sugar in some vegetarian meals the conten
of total sugar was higher then 9 g/100 g. These results confirm that it
is necessary to monitor the salt and sugar contained in SSAP meals.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Elemental composition and bioaccessibility of farmed oysters (Crassostrea gigas) fed different ratios of dietary seaweed and microalgae during broodstock conditioning
Free PMC article: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/pmid/31428337/[Correction added on 8 July 2019, after first online publication: New affiliation was added for Jorge Machado, José Fernando Gonçalves, and Paulo Vaz‐Pires.]The Pacific oyster (Crassostrea gigas) culture has been expanding, thereby leading to
a greater importance of hatcheries. Broodstock conditioning is very important in the
hatchery process, in which diet composition may have a strong influence on the offspring
production and quality. Therefore, the current study evaluated elemental
composition and bioaccessibility of oysters fed different ratios of dietary seaweed
(SW) and microalgae. The dietary conditioning consisted of direct replacement of
microalgae by SW at four substitution levels (0%, 25%, 50%, and 100% diet). It was
observed that oysters fed 100% SW had the highest levels of Be, Cu, Zn, Sr, and Cd.
The most important trend was a concentration decline of most elements with progressively
lower levels of SW substitution for microalgae in the feeds. No Cd or Pb
hazard (contents below 1.0 mg/kg for Cd and 1.5 mg/kg for Pb) was found in oyster
meat. Regarding elemental bioaccessibility, values were similar, near 100% in the
cases of Cu, Br, and I. Only for Mn and Pb, bioaccessibility percentages deviated more
from 100%. Indeed, the value for Pb was 50% ± 7% (initial group), and for Mn, all
values were equal or lower than 29% ± 2% (final group of oysters fed microalgae). It
was observed that Mn, Cd, and Pb bioaccessibility increased with a growing share of
microalgal biomass in the feed. Therefore, this study showed that SW incorporation
into the feed influences elemental composition and bioaccessibility of the oysters. The current study was supported by Project INNOVMAR— Innovation and Sustainability in the Management and Exploitation of Marine Resources (NORTE‐01‐0145‐FEDER‐000035) within the line “INSEAFOOD, Innovation and valorization of seafood products,” funded by the Northern Regional Operational Programme (NORTE2020) through the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF). Synthesis, computational and nanoencapsulation studies on eugenol-derived insecticides
A new set of alkoxy alcohols were synthesised by reaction of eugenol oxirane with aliphatic and aromatic alcohols. These eugenol derivatives were evaluated against their effect upon the viability of the insect cell line Sf9 (Spodoptera frugiperda). The most promising compounds, 4-(3-(tert-butoxy)-2-hydroxypropyl)-2-methoxyphenol and 4-(2-((4-fluorobenzyl)oxy)-3-hydroxypropyl)-2-methoxyphenol were submitted to in silico assays to predict possible targets. Throught an Inverted Virtual Screening approach, 23 common pesticide targets were screened and the top 2 targets predicted were further analyzed through molecular dynamics simulations and free energy calculations. In addition, these eugenol derivatives were subjected to encapsulation and release assays using liposome-based nanosystems of egg phosphatidylcholine/cholesterol (7:3), with encapsulation efficiencies higher than 90% and release profiles well described by both Korsmeyer-Peppas and Weibull models. This research was funded by the project PTDC/ASP-AGR/30154/2017 (POCI-01-0145-FEDER-030154) of the COMPETE 2020 program, co-financed by the FEDER and the European Union.
