Data curation glossary: a survey on terminology and interdisciplinary perspectives
Research is increasingly undertaken by interdisciplinary collaborative teams, which bring expertise in different research areas and in different aspects of the research process. The research workflow is evolving towards a global cyber-infrastructure providing preservation and access to research data and research results, and providing discipline-specific tools. It has to be noted that data infrastructures are stimulated by open science, data science and data sharing policies promoted by the European Commission. In this context, the role and tasks of information professionals and other professionals supporting the research process and the data management are to be re-examined.
The paper explores the first results of a survey investigating, from literature and documentary review, data curators in Europe about the state of art of the job, collecting the main concepts and terms in this domain, as well as collecting interdisciplinary perspectives
Educational ecosystems for Information Science: the case of the University of Pisa
Interdisciplinarity is becoming increasingly important in education. With the rapidly evolving job market, an interdisciplinary education can prepare students for the flexibility and broad knowledge base required to adapt. At the University of Pisa, we recognized the value of an interdisciplinary educational environment during our participation in the European project EINFOSE, where we harmonized the entry requirements for master programs in Information Science. Prior to this project, we had been building study programs in Digital Humanities and Data Science, whose intersection organically nurtured a diverse learning space. Through this lens, we will reflect on the obstacles constituted by disciplinary barriers and stress the importance of a flexible and open âecosystemâ for education. These conclusions will be supported by data analysis on the careers of our students over the last eight years
10291 Abstracts Collection -- Automation in Digital Preservation
Digital Preservation has evolved into a specialized, interdisciplinary research discipline
of its own, seeing significant increases in terms of research capacity, results, but also
challenges. However, with this specialization and subsequent formation of a dedicated subgroup
of researchers active in this field, limitations of the challenges addressed can be observed.
Digital preservation research may seem to react to problems arising, fixing problems that exist
now, rather than proactively researching new solutions that may be applicable only after a few
years of maturing.
Recognising the benefits of bringing together researchers and practitioners with various
professional backgrounds related to digital preservation, a seminar was organized in Schloss
Dagstuhl, at the Leibniz Center for Informatics (18-23 July 2010), with the aim of addressing
the current digital preservation challenges, with a specific focus on the automation aspects
in this field. The main goal of the seminar was to outline some research challenges in digital
preservation, providing a number of âresearch questionsâ that could be immediately tackled,
e.g. in Doctoral Thesis. The seminar intended also to highlight the need for the digital
preservation community to reach out to IT research and other research communities outside the
immediate digital preservation domain, in order to jointly develop solutions
Understanding Roles and Responsibilities of Data Curators: An International Perspective
Data curation has emerged as a new area of responsibility for researchers, librarians, and information professionals in the digital library environment. This paper presents the preliminary findings of a large research project sponsored by the International Federation of Library Associations (IFLA), under the auspices of its Library Theory and Research (LTR) Section. The primary objective of the project is to identify the characteristic tasks and responsibilities of data curators in both international and interdisciplinary contexts. The ultimate objective, however, is to develop a âdata curation ontologyâ that will better define the profession and support the development of educational curricula to train future data curators

10291 Summary reports of the Breakout Sessions -- Automation in Digital Preservation
This report gathers the final (draft) reports of each breakout session, with a brief summary of the main points discussed and some suggestions of possible (challenging) research topics
Scuola Estiva Strumenti Digitali per Umanisti
Between 12-16th June 2017 a Summer School was held in Pisa entitled âDigital Tools for Humanistsâ. The School was organized by AIUCD (the Italian Association for Digital Humanities), in cooperation with the Laboratory for Digital Culture (LabCD) and the Degree Course on Digital Humanities of the University of Pisa, and with the Institute for Computational Linguistics of the Italian National Research Council (CNR-ILC).The School presented a number of topics and tools for research and application in Digital Humanities, and was very well received by its twenty-five participants.

Research Data Management in the Curriculum: An Interdisciplinary Approach
AbstractResearch Data Management is broadly understood as collecting, analyzing, publishing, reanalyzing, critiquing, and reusing data. The increase of digital content in the broad areas of Institutional and domain specific Repositories, Libraries, Archives and Museums and the increased interest in the sharing and preservation of âresearch dataâ have triggered the emergence of new roles such as Data Curator. The paper refers about the on-going investigation of current data curator education and training programs with regard to the role of information professionals and/or data scientists in the research lifecycle. The investigation has been based on a series of workshops and events discussing the concerns of researchers and teachers about digital library and digital curation. A first list of competencies and skills at technical and operational level that professionals should have, has been evidenced. The theoretical framework and structure of educational programmes should have sufficient flexibility to accommodate the needs of various groups of specialists
