    Adult sex ratios of loggerhead sea turtles (<em>Caretta caretta</em>) in two Mediterranean foraging grounds

    Sea turtles show temperature-dependent sex determination (TSD) and information on sex ratios at different life stages is necessary both for population dynamics models for conservation and to shed light on the possible adaptive value of TSD. Adults represent the less abundant class of sea turtle populations and adult sex ratios at foraging grounds are very difficult to obtain. We first analysed biometric data of 460 juvenile and adult loggerhead sea turtles ranging from 60 to 97.5 cm curved carapace length (CCL), in which a clear bimodal distribution of tail length (the main secondary sexual character of adult males) was observed in the size class >75 cm CCL. We then sexed 142 adult turtles in this size class collected from the Tunisian shelf and from the southeastern Tyrrhenian Sea, observing a proportion of females of 51.5% (95% CI: 41.2-61.8%; n=97) and 40.0% (95% CI: 25.7-55.7%; n=45) respectively. Our results complement previous studies and support their findings of similar and more balanced sex ratios in adult and juvenile loggerhead turtles in the Mediterranean, in contrast with highly female-biased sex ratios of hatchlings

    Monitoring by in situ neutron diffraction of simultaneous dehydration and Ni2+ mobility in partially exchanged NaY zeolites

    International audiencePowder neutron diffraction is used to follow structural changes occurring during heat and vacuum assisted dehydration of 3 wt% nickel exchanged NaY. The structures determined from Rietveld refinement confirm the nickel ion displacement from the supercages and sodalite cages towards hexagonal prisms upon water removal. Not only this mobility but also its relationship with the dehydration level is demonstrated, owing to real time quantification of dehydration through changes in the intensity of the incoherent neutron scattering signal. Comparison with TGA data proves that this signal is fully attributable to water molecules adsorbed in the zeolite. STEM/EDX and in situ heating TEM studies provide complementary information on homogeneous Ni distribution (initial state) and on reductive sintering in vacuum at a high temperature

    Combining excitation-emission matrix fluorescence spectroscopy, parallel factor analysis, cyclodextrin-modified micellar electrokinetic chromatography and partial least squares class-modelling for green tea characterization

    In this study, an alternative analytical approach for analyzing and characterizing green tea (GT) samples is proposed, based on the combination of excitation–emission matrix (EEM) fluorescence spectroscopy and multivariate chemometric techniques. The three-dimensional spectra of 63 GT samples were recorded using a Perkin–Elmer LS55 luminescence spectrometer; emission spectra were recorded between 295 and 800 nm at excitation wavelength ranging from 200 to 290 nm, with excitation and emission slits both set at 10 nm. The excitation and emission profiles of two factors were obtained using Parallel Factor Analysis (PARAFAC) as a 3-way decomposition method. In this way, for the first time, the spectra of two main fluorophores in green teas have been found. Moreover, a cyclodextrin-modified micellar electrokinetic chromatography method was employed to quantify the most represented catechins and methylxanthines in a subset of 24 GT samples in order to obtain complementary information on the geographical origin of tea. The discrimination ability between the two types of tea has been shown by a Partial Least Squares Class-Modelling performed on the electrokinetic chromatography data, being the sensitivity and specificity of the class model built for the Japanese GT samples 98.70% and 98.68%, respectively. This comprehensive work demonstrates the capability of the combination of EEM fluorescence spectroscopy and PARAFAC model for characterizing, differentiating and analyzing GT samples

    Mediterranean sea turtles: current knowledge and priorities for conservation and research

    The available information regarding the 2 sea turtle species breeding in the Mediterranean (loggerhead turtle Caretta caretta and green turtle Chelonia mydas) is reviewed, including biometrics and morphology, identification of breeding and foraging areas, ecology and behaviour, abundance and trends, population structure and dynamics, anthropogenic threats and conservation measures. Although a large body of knowledge has been generated, research efforts have been inconsistently allocated across geographic areas, species and topics. Significant gaps still exist, ranging from the most fundamental aspects, such as the distribution of major nesting sites and the total number of clutches laid annually in the region, to more specific topics like age at maturity, survival rates and behavioural ecology, especially for certain areas (e.g. south-eastern Mediterranean). These gaps are particularly marked for the green turtle. The recent positive trends of nest counts at some nesting sites may be the result of the cessation of past exploitation and decades of conservation measures on land, both in the form of national regulations and of continued active protection of clutches. Therefore, the current status should be considered as dependent on such ongoing conservation efforts. Mitigation of incidental catch in fisheries, the main anthropogenic threat at sea, is still in its infancy. From the analysis of the present status a comprehensive list of research and conservation priorities is proposed

    Oscillatory behavior of Pd-Au catalysts in toluene total oxidation

    In this work, the activity of bimetallic Pd-Au doped hierarchically structured titania catalysts has been investigated in the total oxidation of toluene. In earlier works, doping titania with group Vb metal oxides ensured an increased catalytic performance in the elimination of VOC molecules. A synergy between gold and palladium loaded at the surface of titania supports provided better performances in VOC oxidation reactions. Therefore, the main focus in this work was to investigate the durability of the prepared catalysts under long time-on-stream periods. Vanadium-doped catalysts showed a stable activity throughout the whole 110 h test, whereas, surprisingly, niobium-doped catalysts presented a cycle-like activity while nevertheless maintaining a high performance in toluene elimination. Operando Diffuse Reflectance Infrared Fourrier Transform spectroscopy (DRIFT) experiments revealed that variations in the presence of OH radicals and the presence of carbonaceous compounds adsorbed at the surface of spent catalysts varies with the occurrence of oscillations. X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) results show that interactions between the material and the active phase provided extra amounts of mobile oxygen species and participated in easing the reduction of palladium. An enhanced redox reaction scheme is thus obtained and allows the occurrence of the cyclic-like performance of the catalyst

    International consensus statement on allergy and rhinology: Allergic rhinitis – 2023

    Background: In the 5 years that have passed since the publication of the 2018 International Consensus Statement on Allergy and Rhinology: Allergic Rhinitis (ICAR-Allergic Rhinitis 2018), the literature has expanded substantially. The ICAR-Allergic Rhinitis 2023 update presents 144 individual topics on allergic rhinitis (AR), expanded by over 40 topics from the 2018 document. Originally presented topics from 2018 have also been reviewed and updated. The executive summary highlights key evidence-based findings and recommendation from the full document. Methods: ICAR-Allergic Rhinitis 2023 employed established evidence-based review with recommendation (EBRR) methodology to individually evaluate each topic. Stepwise iterative peer review and consensus was performed for each topic. The final document was then collated and includes the results of this work. Results: ICAR-Allergic Rhinitis 2023 includes 10 major content areas and 144 individual topics related to AR. For a substantial proportion of topics included, an aggregate grade of evidence is presented, which is determined by collating the levels of evidence for each available study identified in the literature. For topics in which a diagnostic or therapeutic intervention is considered, a recommendation summary is presented, which considers the aggregate grade of evidence, benefit, harm, and cost. Conclusion: The ICAR-Allergic Rhinitis 2023 update provides a comprehensive evaluation of AR and the currently available evidence. It is this evidence that contributes to our current knowledge base and recommendations for patient evaluation and treatment
