    Americans Divided Over Direction of Bidens Climate Change Policies

    Pew Research Center conducted this study to understand how Americans view climate, environmental and energy issues. For this analysis, we surveyed 10,282 U.S. adults from May 2 to 8, 2022. Everyone who took part in the survey is a member of the Center's American Trends Panel (ATP), an online survey panel that is recruited through national, random sampling of residential addresses. This way, nearly all U.S. adults have a chance of selection. The survey is weighted to be representative of the U.S. adult population by gender, race, ethnicity, partisan affiliation, education and other categories

    Field observations of soil temperature and water tension feedback effects on needle ice nights

    Numerous laboratory studies have indicated that thermal gradients may produce appreciable soil water movement in the absence of a strong suction field. In addition the soil water flow and thermal properties are physically interrelated. This paper presents field data taken during needle ice events at Vancouver, Canada, and yields an indication of the magnitude of interaction between the thermal and water flow properties. This feedback determines the state of soil frost hazard in a location where damage to plant material is produced by ice frost hazard in a location where damage to plant material is produced by ice needle growth. Further apparently anomalous interruption in the normal parabolic temperature-time pattern during radiation events is interpreted as the product of water flow down a thermal gradient. Zahlreiche Laboratoriumsstudien deuteten darauf hin, daß thermische Gradienten selbst bei Abwesenheit starker Saugkräfte bedeutsame Wasserbewegungen im Boden hervorrufen können. Überdies stehen die Strömung des Bodenwassers und die thermischen Eigenschaften des Bodens damit in physikalischem Zusammenhang. Die vorliegende Arbeit enthält Meßdaten, die während der Bildung von Nadeleis in Vancouver, Kanada, gewonnen wurden und größenordnungsmäßige Beziehungen zwischen Wärme- und Wasserstrom im Boden angeben. Die Rückkopplung zwischen den beiden Strömen bestimmt die Bodenfrostgefahr an Orten, wo Pflanzenschäden durch Eisnadelbildung hervorgerufen werden.     Mitochondrial complex I deficiency induces Alzheimer\u27s disease-like signatures that are reversible by targeted therapy.

    INTRODUCTION: Mitochondrial dysfunction is implicated in Alzheimer\u27s disease (AD), but whether it drives AD-associated changes is unclear. We assessed transcriptomic alterations in the brains of Ndufs4 METHODS: Cortico-hippocampal tissue from Ndufs4 RESULTS: Knockout of Ndufs4-mediated mtCI deficiency disrupted mitochondrial homeostasis, energy metabolism, and synaptic gene expression, recapitulating transcriptomic signatures of AD. CP2 treatment partially reversed these changes, with female Ndufs4 DISCUSSION: Loss of mtCI activity alone is sufficient to induce AD-like molecular changes in the brain, independent of amyloid beta or phosphorylated tau. CP2-mediated rescue highlights the potential of targeting mitochondria as a therapeutic strategy for AD. Sex-specific responses suggest important considerations for personalized therapeutics. HIGHLIGHTS: Activity of mitochondrial complex I (mtCI) affects broad mitochondrial and neuronal transcriptional networks. A reduction of mtCI activity is sufficient to induce transcriptomic changes reminiscent of those observed in late-onset Alsheimer\u27s disease (AD) patients and familial mouse models of AD. Pharmacological targeting of mtCI mediates neuroprotective signaling. Male and female mice have differential responses to the loss of mtCI activity and to the mitochondria-targeted therapeutics.     In the wake of April's marches for science and climate in Washington and around the country, Americans are divided in their support of the events' goals and their sense of whether it will make a difference. In particular, a new Pew Research Center survey finds that most Democrats and younger adults are convinced that these public events will help the causes of scientists. By contrast, Republicans and older adults believe the marches will not raise public support for scientists, aid efforts to increase government funding of science, enhance the role of scientists in policy debates or lead to increased efforts to combat global climate change
