    Downstream influence of swept slot injection in hypersonic turbulent flow

    Results of an experimental and numerical investigation of tangential swept slot injection into a thick turbulent boundary layer at Mach 6 are presented. Film cooling effectiveness, skin friction, and flow structure downstream of the swept slot injection were investigated. The data were compared with that for unswept slots, and it was found that cooling effectiveness and skin friction reductions are not significantly affected by sweeping the slot

    Creating A Cause For Sustainability: A Practice-Based Research Project For Undergraduate Students

    Corporate social responsibility (CSR) and corporate sustainability (CS) practices have an influence on the image and profitability of any business. As business schools attempt to mold future leaders, schools have found exploring the topic of CSR and CS into their business curriculum. While many theoretical approaches have been taken, there are few examples of practical projects that professors can utilize in the classroom. Here, the authors present an example of a semester-long project that forces students to examine and reflect upon their own personal consumption habits and create a personal CSR report. The authors describe the project, expected outcomes, and the narratives that are created in the project and the course. Finally, the paper examines the importance of personal reflection on the development of personal cause and responsibility, which can help to develop future socially responsible leaders

    Development of an objective tool for the diagnosis of myxedema coma

    Myxedema coma, a rare entity, with a reported 25%–65% mortality had no objective criteria for making the diagnosis when we began our study. We developed an objective screening tool for myxedema coma to more easily identify patients and examine the best treatment method in future prospective studies to reduce the mortality of this entity. We conducted a retrospective chart review to find all patients aged ≥18 years admitted with myxedema coma from January 1, 2005 through June 13, 2010 at Indiana University Health Methodist Hospital. On the basis of both our retrospective chart review and on literature accounts, we identified 6 criteria to diagnose myxedema coma. We identified 10 patients initially diagnosed with myxedema coma and established a control group consisting of 13 patients identified with altered mental status and increased thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) levels. The 6 variables we created for the screening tool were heart rate, temperature, Glasgow coma scale, TSH, free thyroxine, and precipitating factors. The screening tool has a sensitivity and specificity of about 80%. We ran a logistic regression model using the 10 study patients and 13 controls with the 6 variables. No variables alone significantly contributed to the model. However, the overall model was highly significant (P = 0.012), providing strong support for a scoring system that uses these variables simultaneously. This screening tool enables physicians to rapidly diagnose myxedema coma to expedite treatment. A more refined diagnostic tool may be used in future clinical studies designed to determine the optimal treatment

    Review of best practice in cardiac rehabilitation for women

    Purpose: Cardiovascular disease is defined as damage to, or narrowing of, arteries due to atherosclerosis and is the leading cause of mortality and morbidity among women worldwide. Cardiovascular disease is recognized to be both a leading cause of mortality and an undertreated condition for women. The goals of this review manuscript are to present the current background literature specific to cardiac rehabilitation programs for women and serve as a knowledge translation strategy to help raise therapists’ awareness of the need for cardiac rehabilitation programs specifically designed for female patients. Methods: A review of best practice literature in cardiac rehabilitation for women. Results: With current increasing trends in risk factors, including stress, obesity, poor diet, smoking, and a sedentary lifestyle, the future burden could be overwhelming from the perspective of individuals’ health and health authorities’ resources. Conclusions: Emerging research clearly demonstrates the need for cardiac rehabilitation programs tailored for women and highlighting the unique features of program delivery that can reduce the risk of under-referral and treatment program dropout

    Decay Rate of Triaxially-Deformed Proton Emitters

    The decay rate of a triaxially-deformed proton emitter is calculated in a particle-rotor model, which is based on a deformed Woods-Saxon potential and includes a deformed spin-orbit interaction. The wave function of the I=7/2−I=7/2^{-} ground state of the deformed proton emitter 141^{141}Ho is obtained in the adiabatic limit, and a Green's function technique is used to calculate the decay rate and branching ratio to the first excited 2+^{+} state of the daughter nucleus. Only for values of the triaxial angle γ\gamma <5∘<5^{\circ} is good agreement obtained for both the total decay rate and the 2+^{+} branching ratio.Comment: 19 pages, 4 figure

    Single-shot nanosecond-resolution multiframe passive imaging by multiplexed structured image capture

    The Multiplexed Structured Image Capture (MUSIC) technique is used to demonstrate single-shot multiframe passive imaging, with a nanosecond difference between the resulting images. This technique uses modulation of light from a scene before imaging, in order to encode the target’s temporal evolution into spatial frequency shifts, each of which corresponds to a unique time and results in individual and distinct snapshots. The resulting images correspond to different effective imaging gate times, because of the optical path delays. Computer processing of the multiplexed single-shot image recovers the nanosecond-resolution evolution. The MUSIC technique is used to demonstrate imaging of a laser-induced plasma. Simultaneous single-shot measurements of electron numbers by coherent microwave scattering were obtained and showed good agreement with MUSIC characterization. The MUSIC technique demonstrates spatial modulation of images used for passive imaging. This allows multiple frames to be stacked into a single image. This method could also pave the way for real-time imaging and characterization of ultrafast processes and visualization, as well as general tracking of fast objects
