    Environmental and anthropogenic drivers affect the abundance of anchovy and mysids in the Guadalquivir Estuary (SW Spain)

    Natural drivers, acting at various spatio-temporal scales firstly determine the distribution and abundance of species. On top of this natural forcing we usually find anthropogenic effects. Disentangling the relative influence of these two sources of variability has always been a challenge in ecology, and particularly in fisheries science. The Guadalquivir Estuary (SW Spain) serves as nursery ground for several commercial species in the Gulf of Cadiz. This study aims at quantifying the relative influence of biological (predator-prey effects), environmental (e.g. temperature, winds) and anthropogenic (dam discharges) effects on this nursery function with the focus on an important species, anchovy. We used data from a monitoring programme consisting of monthly records since 1997 at two sites: Tarfia (32 km) and Bonanza (8 km) (distance from the river mouth). Nonparametric models (GAM) were fit to the data to estimate the partial effects of the various covariates. We found positive and linear effects of temperature and mysids on anchovy abundance in both stations, while turbidity, winds and freshwater input had a negative effect, reducing fish abundance. A dam, 110 km upstream from the Guadalquivir mouth regulates freshwater discharges, directly influencing the estuarine habitat quality and extent, as captured by our models. In order to separate the anthropogenic effects from natural variability we further ran the models on a number of scenarios combining a range of dam discharges and environmental conditions. Water management stands out as a key node where potentially conflicting interests (irrigators, electric power, shipping, aquaculture, fisheries) converge. By focussing on the consequences that the effects of these activities ultimately have on the anchovy fishery, through this nursery function, our study aims to contribute to the process of making the ecosystem approach operational in the Gulf of Cadiz

    The Gulf of Cadiz socio-ecosystem is characterized by a focal ecosystem component –the estuary of the Guadalquivir River– that has an in uence on the marine ecosystem –serves as a nursery area– and at the same time concentrates a great number of sectoral human activities. This nursery role particularly affects the anchovy fishery, which is the most economically and culturally important fishery in the region. As a transition zone between terrestrial and marine environments, estuaries are particularly sensitive to human activities, either developed directly at the aquatic environment or its surroundings. A dam 110 km upstream from the river mouth regulates freshwater input (mainly for agriculture purposes) into the estuary with consequences on turbidity and salinity. Using time series analysis on 18 years of monthly data from an estuarine monitoring program we (1) quantify the effects that natural (plankton, temperature, winds) and anthropogenic-influenced variables (freshwater volume, turbidity, salinity) have on the abundance of anchovy larvae and juveniles, and (2) relate the abundance of these estuarine-resident early stages to the abundance of adult anchovy in the sea. Water management stands out as a key node where potentially con icting interests (agriculture, power generation, aquaculture, fisheries) converge. Linking land-based activities to its impact on stock biomass represents the main challenge to ecosystem-based management in this particular regional sea.     Trophic control in the Guadalquivir estuary and neighbouring waters of the Gulf of Cadiz

    The Guadalquivir estuary (SW Spain) is a non-stratified estuary with a gradual change in salinity. It supports an important biodiversity and functions as a nursery area for many commercial species (e.g. anchovy) in the Gulf of Cadiz (GoC). The understanding of the interplay between the environmental forcing (bottom-up) and the trophic regulation is essential to understand its functioning in relation to the GoC fisheries. Here, we seek to study the effects of environmental variables and predator-prey interaction (mysid-anchovy) in the estuary and surrounding marine areas with a particular focus on the zooplankton as key intermediaries between primary production and marine fish juveniles. A long-term (18 yr) monitoring program has been carried out in two sites: Tarfia and Bonanza (32 km and 8 km distance from the river mouth respectively). The latter station samples well the marine water masses advected into the estuary during the ebb flow. Our dataset includes mysids, anchovy larvae and juveniles, temperature, salinity, turbidity, freshwater discharges, precipitation and winds. We used time series-analysis (GAMs) to test the trophic, environmental and anthropogenic effects. Temperature was found to have a positive effect on mysids at both stations while salinity showed a positive effect only at Tarfia. Turbidity showed a strong negative effect on the whole estuary and so did the freshwater discharges at Bonanza, which are regulated by a dam. The results indicate that the trophic control in the estuary of the Guadalquivir is resource-driven. Our models also highlight that marine mysids have a positive effect on anchovy

    Near real-time security system applied to SDN environments in IoT networks using convolutional neural network

    [EN] The Internet of Things (IoT) paradigm brings new and promising possibilities for services and products. The heterogeneity of IoT devices highlights the inefficiency of traditional networks' structures to support their specific requirements due to their lack of flexibility. Thus, Software-defined Networking (SDN) is commonly associated with IoT since this architecture provides a more flexible and manageable network environment. As shown by recent events, IoT devices may be used for large scale Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks due to their lack of security. This kind of attack is commonly detected and mitigated at the destination-end network but, due to the massive volume of information that IoT botnets generate, this approach is becoming impracticable. We propose in this paper a near real-time SDN security system that both prevents DDoS attacks on the source-end network and protects the sources SDN controller against traffic impairment. For this, we apply and test a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) for DDoS detection, and describe how the system could mitigate the detected attacks. The performance outcomes were performed in two test scenarios, and the results pointed out that the proposed SDN security system is promising against next-generation DDoS attacks.     O presente artigo procura investigar a temática da criação de uma personalidade jurídica (eletrônica) para agentes autônomos de inteligência artificial, abordando as limitações desse tipo de iniciativa através da análise do instituto da pessoa jurídica. Para tanto,  apresentadas as principais características desse tipo de tecnologia que justificariam a proposta de personificação, bem como os atributos necessários para o seu enquadramento na proposta. Busca-se, por fim, confrontar a personalidade eletrônica com a nova proposta europeia de regulamentação da Inteligência Artificial.

    Seasonal variation of zooplankton and environmental conditions along a transect in the Gulf of Cádiz

    This study presents seasonal variation in the zooplankton composition of the Gulf of Cádiz was studied between 2001 and 2012. Samples were collected three times per year, in the spring, summer and autumn at three stations situated along a transect perpendicular to the coast. The total zooplankton abundance during the summer was higher than in the spring and autumn. Zooplankton community is characterized by a seasonal cycle mirroring similar cycles in the physical environment. Differences in community composition were also found along the transect, particularly between the coastal station, under the influence of the Guadalquivir River, and the outer station, characterized by oceanic conditions.     Saúde bucal, práticas de higiene bucal e ocorrência de câncer da cavidade oral

    OBJECTIVE: To assess the association between oral health and hygiene practices and oral cancer. METHODS: Hospital-based case-control study in the metropolitan area of São Paulo, southeastern Brazil, from 1998 to 2002. A total 309 patients with squamous cell carcinoma of the mouth and the pharynx and 468 controls matched by sex and age were included in the study. Cases were recruited in seven reference hospitals and controls were selected in five out of the seven participating hospitals. Detailed information on smoking, alcohol consumption, schooling, oral health status and hygiene practices were obtained through interviews. Odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CI), adjusted by sex, age, schooling, smoking, alcohol consumption as well as the variables oral health status and hygiene practices were estimated using unconditional logistic regression analyses. RESULTS: The use of complete dental prosthesis was not associated with oral cancer but regular gum bleeding showed a strong association (OR 3.1; 95% CI 1.2-7.9). Those who never attended a dental visit were more likely to have oral cancer (OR 2.5; 95% CI 1.3-4.8). Daily mouthwash use showed a stronger association to pharynx (OR 4.7; 95% CI 1.8-12.5) than mouth cancer (OR 3.2; 95% CI 1.6-6.3). CONCLUSIONS: Gum bleeding, no dental care, and daily mouthwash use were factors associated with oral cancer regardless of tobacco and alcohol consumption.OBJETIVO: Avaliar a associação entre saúde e higiene bucal na ocorrência de câncer oral. MÉTODOS: Estudo caso-controle de base hospitalar, realizado entre 1998 e 2002 na área metropolitana de São Paulo, SP. Foram incluídos 309 pacientes com carcinoma epidermóide de boca e orofaringe e 468 controles, pareados com os casos por sexo e idade. Os casos foram levantados em sete hospitais que concentram a assistência médica a pacientes com a doença e os controles rastreados em cinco hospitais gerais dentre os sete. Informações pormenorizadas sobre tabagismo, consumo de álcool, escolaridade, saúde bucal e práticas de higiene bucal foram obtidas por entrevista. Por meio de análise de regressão logística não condicional foram calculados odds ratios (OR) e intervalos com 95% de confiança (IC 95%), ajustados por sexo, idade, nível educacional, tabagismo e consumo de álcool, bem como para as demais variáveis de saúde e higiene bucal. RESULTADOS: Uso de prótese bucal total não se associou a câncer oral, mas sangramento gengival freqüente apresentou alta associação (OR=3,1; IC 95%: 1,2;7,9). Nunca ter consultado dentista mostrou associação com câncer oral (OR=2,5; IC 95%: 1,3;4,8). Uso diário de enxaguatórios bucais apresentou associação mais intensa com tumores de faringe (OR=4,7; IC 95%: 1,8;12,5) do que com tumores de boca (OR=3,2; IC 95%: 1,6;6,3).
