Seis longos anos dediquei a extenso e moroso trabalho,
Learning entrepreneurship in a multicultural context
ABSTRACT Nowadays learning entrepreneurship in higher education became an important issue. International experiences promote the relationship between students from several countries in a multicultural context. ARE em âmbito escolar: problemas e possíveis soluções
Entrepreneurship, methodologies in higher education an experience in a portuguese business school
Today entrepreneurship education is an important issue to improve the process of creating new firm assuming new risks and rewards. The theoretical discussion about around the question: “Entrepreneurs are born or made?” assume that is possible educate to be entrepreneurs. Schools have an important role in this process. Believing in this possibility our Business School developed a set of pedagogical methodologies supported in apprenticeship based on “learning by doing”. This pedagogical methodology was created through a study of best practices. This study aims to propose a set of innovative methodologies and students perceptions about their apprenticeship experience/process. The study concludes with a set of recommendations and a best practices manual useful to appliance in higher education.Innovative methodologies; entrepreneurship education; learning by doing
Bacterial biofilms, antibiotic resistance and healthcare-associated infections: a dangerous connection
In 2012, were estimated 6.7 million cases of healthcare-associated infections (HAI) either
in long-term care facilities or acute-care hospitals from which result 37,000 deaths
configuring a serious public health problem [1].
The etiological agents are diverse and often resistant to antimicrobial agents. One of the
mechanisms responsible for the emergence of drug resistance is biofilm assembly.
Biofilms are defined as thin layers of microorganisms adhering to the surface of a
structure, which may be organic or inorganic, together with the polymers that they secrete
[2]. They are dynamic structures which experience different stages of organization with
the ageing and are linked to an increase in bacterial resistance to host defense
mechanisms, antibiotics, sterilization procedures other than autoclaving, persistence in
water distribution systems and other surfaces. The understanding of bacteria organization
within the biofilm and the identification of differences between planktonic and sessile
forms of bacteria will be a step forward to fight HAIs.
Bacterial isolates were grown in adequate medium. Antibiotic susceptibility was
evaluated by broth microdilution method and interpreted according to NCCLS guidelines.
A similar assay was performed to evaluate biofilm susceptibility to antibiotics. Bacteria
ability to assemble biofilms was assayed by the microtiter-plate test [3] being tested in
both abiotic (materials present in healthcare units) and biotic (Hella cells) surfaces. The
biofilm structure was assessed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) in either
backscattered electron diffraction or secondary electrons mode.
The kinetic of biofilm assembly depends on bacteria growth rate, incubation temperature
and medium. Furthermore, the SEM analysis of planktonic and sessile forms of the same
bacteria allowed the identification of structural differences which may be involved in
virulence (Fig. 1). Bacteria ability to assemble biofilms seems to be independent of the
abiotic structure (Fig.2). The same is not observed in biotic surfaces. This fact suggests
that biofilm assembly in vivo is dependent of bacteria tropism. The minimum inhibitory
concentration (MIC) determine for bacteria organized in biofilms is higher than for their
planktonic forms. The increase ranges from 2 to 200 folds and is proportional to the
ability of bacteria to assemble biofilms.
Further studies will be conducted in order to prevent biofilm assembly within healthcare
units which will result in a decrease of HAI and emergence of antibiotic resistant
bacteria
com especial relevância./ ABSTRACT - Taking as its central objective, to identify and characterize possible learning styles that
exist in communities with high illiteracy rates, this research focused on the study of the
learning processes of illiterate individuals from six small villages in the municipality of
Alandroal and it included the realization of a case study, based on a two-dimensional
methodology.
The descriptive and inferential analysis confirmed the hypothesis that it was the fact that
the individuals were located in communities with certain geographical, cultural,
economic and social characteristics which led to the development of specific
knowledge/ways of doing that resulted in possible local styles of learning.
It is argued that, by its geographical location and the existing community dynamics, the
contours/singularities of the learning processes of the respondents from the localities of
Ferreira de Capelins and, essentially, of Juromenha, presented a particular relevance
Parental involvement during pandemic times: challenges and opportunities
Due to COVID-19, many countries implemented emergency plans, such as lockdown and school closures. This new situation has significantly affected families, namely, the involvement required to support children's learning at home. The current study aimed to analyze Portuguese parents' perceptions of their home-based parental involvement in their children's learning during the lockdown and school closures in 2020 due to COVID-19. An online survey, using a closed-ended questionnaire, was employed. Variables included parents' sociodemographic and COVID-19 related characteristics; students' sociodemographic characteristics; distance learning context; parental involvement; and students' autonomy. Data were collected from a sample of 21,333 parents with children from elementary school to secondary education, and statistical data analysis was performed using IBM SPSS Statistics 26. Findings revealed that Portuguese parents supported their children during the pandemic mainly through the monitoring of attention in classes and task realization. However, several variables appear to significantly determine parental involvement time, which is higher when students attend public schools, when they are less autonomous and younger, when parents' level of education is lower, when the child is a boy (except in secondary education where gender is not relevant), and when the online school time is higher. Findings highlight the need for a significant investment of time from parents, particularly of primary school children, making it difficult to cohere work or telework with school activities. Implications for policies, schools, families are discussed in order to promote children's learning and success.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
