    Checkpoint Inhibitors in Nonsmall Cell Lung Cancer

    Lung cancer remains the leading cause of cancer‐related deaths worldwide. The majority of NSCLC patients present with advanced stage disease. Lung cancer was once thought of as a low antigenicity cancer unlikely to benefit from immunotherapy, but has recently been found to have a high level of antigenicity. Moreover, a large body of research now exists to support both the safety and efficacy of immunotherapy in advanced stage NSCLC. The checkpoint inhibitors nivolumab, pembrolizumab, and atezolizumab are now approved by the U.S. Federal Drug Administration for second‐line treatment in advanced stage NSCLC. In addition to being efficacious, checkpoint inhibitors have a superior safety profile compared to previous standard of care, chemotherapy. Further trials are needed to investigate the checkpoint inhibitors’ role in combination treatment, first‐line treatment, and early stage disease

    Torsion and vibration-torsion levels of the S1 and ground cation electronic states of para-fluorotoluene

    We investigate the low-energy transitions (0–570 cm-1) of the S1 state of para-fluorotoluene (pFT) using a combination of resonance-enhanced multiphoton ionization (REMPI) and zero-kinetic-energy (ZEKE) spectroscopy and quantum chemical calculations. By using various S1 states as intermediate levels, we obtain zero-kinetic-energy (ZEKE) spectra. The differing activity observed allows detailed assignments to be made of both the cation and S1 low-energy levels. The assignments are in line with the recently-published work on toluene from the Lawrance group [J. Chem. Phys. 143, 044313 (2015)], which considered vibration-torsion coupling in depth for the S1 state of toluene. In addition, we investigate whether two bands that occur in the range 390–420 cm-1 are the result of a Fermi resonance; we present evidence for weak coupling between various vibrations and torsions that contribute to this region.     Let G be a simple algebraic group over an algebraically closed field k; assume that Char k is zero or good for G. Let \cB be the variety of Borel subgroups of G and let e in Lie G be nilpotent. There is a natural action of the centralizer C_G(e) of e in G on the Springer fibre \cB_e = {B' in \cB | e in Lie B'} associated to e. In this paper we consider the case, where e lies in the subregular nilpotent orbit; in this case \cB_e is a Dynkin curve. We give a complete description of the C_G(e)-orbits in \cB_e. In particular, we classify the irreducible components of \cB_e on which C_G(e) acts with finitely many orbits. In an application we obtain a classification of all subregular orbital varieties admitting a finite number of B-orbits for B a fixed Borel subgroup of G.Comment: 12 pages, to appear in Math

    Novel Compact and Broadband Frequency-Selectable Rectennas for a Wide Input-Power and Load Impedance Range

    Wireless power transfer (WPT) and wireless energy harvesting (WEH) using rectennas are becoming an emerging technology. This paper presents a novel design method for a rectenna suitable for a wide range of selectable operating frequency band, input power level, and load impedance. Most importantly, it is realized without using complex impedance matching networks which shows significant advantages over existing rectennas in terms of the structure and cost. A rectenna example has been designed, made, and tested using this novel method. The proposed rectenna has a compact size of 90 × 90 × 1.58 mm 3 and operates at four different frequency bands that are selectable from 1.1 to 2.7 GHz. Over 60% (up to 85%) energy conversion efficiency is achieved for the input power from 0 to 15 dBm and load impedance between 700 and 4500 Ω. The rectenna shows excellent performance for the target applications (WPT and WEH) with a much-simplified structure and reduced cost

    Euthanasia-related strain and coping strategies in animal shelter employees

    Objective—To identify and evaluate coping strategies advocated by experienced animal shelter workers who directly engaged in euthanizing animals. Design—Cross-sectional study. Sample Population—Animal shelters across the United States in which euthanasia was conducted (5 to 100 employees/shelter). Procedures—With the assistance of experts associated with the Humane Society of the United States, the authors identified 88 animal shelters throughout the United States in which animal euthanasia was actively conducted and for which contact information regarding the shelter director was available. Staff at 62 animal shelters agreed to participate in the survey. Survey packets were mailed to the 62 shelter directors, who then distributed them to employees. The survey included questions regarding respondent age, level of education, and role and asked those directly involved in the euthanasia of animals to provide advice on strategies for new euthanasia technicians to deal with the related stress. Employees completed the survey and returned it by mail. Content analysis techniques were used to summarize survey responses. Results—Coping strategies suggested by 242 euthanasia technicians were summarized into 26 distinct coping recommendations in 8 categories: competence or skills strategies, euthanasia behavioral strategies, cognitive or self-talk strategies, emotional regulation strategies, separation strategies, get-help strategies, seek long-term solution strategies, and withdrawal strategies. Conclusions and Clinical Relevance—Euthanizing animals is a major stressor for many animal shelter workers. Information regarding the coping strategies identified in this study may be useful for training new euthanasia technicians

    This report assesses the potential for expanding on current capacity to monitor land condition using remotely sensed fractional cover products to improve biomass estimation, animal productivity, pasture growth models and grazing decision tools (e.g. safe carrying capacity) across the Australian rangelands. We focus on northern Australia and include relevant research and implementation from southern Australia where appropriate

    Paranoia and post-traumatic stress disorder in the months after a physical assault: a longitudinal study examining shared and differential predictors.

    Background: Being physically assaulted is known to increase the risk of the occurrence of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms but it may also skew judgements about the intentions of other people. The objectives of the study were to assess paranoia and PTSD after an assault and to test whether theory-derived cognitive factors predicted the persistence of these problems. Method: At 4 weeks after hospital attendance due to an assault, 106 people were assessed on multiple symptom measures (including virtual reality) and cognitive factors from models of paranoia and PTSD. The symptom measures were repeated 3 and 6 months later. Results: Factor analysis indicated that paranoia and PTSD were distinct experiences, though positively correlated. At 4 weeks, 33% of participants met diagnostic criteria for PTSD, falling to 16% at follow-up. Of the group at the first assessment, 80% reported that since the assault they were excessively fearful of other people, which over time fell to 66%. Almost all the cognitive factors (including information-processing style during the trauma, mental defeat, qualities of unwanted memories, self-blame, negative thoughts about self, worry, safety behaviours, anomalous internal experiences and cognitive inflexibility) predicted later paranoia and PTSD, but there was little evidence of differential prediction. Conclusions: Paranoia after an assault may be common and distinguishable from PTSD but predicted by a strikingly similar range of factors
