Bayesian and Frequentist Approaches to Hedonic Modeling in a Geo-Statistical Framework

We compare Least Squares, Maximum Likelihood and Bayesian approaches to estimation in a Hedonic context. The approaches are compared from theoretical and practical perspectives and from the viewpoint of a policy maker or urban planner. The approaches are applied to data on the property market in Bogota, Colombia. We find that no approach is unambiguously better than the others and recommend that choice of estimation technique should be predicated upon the characteristics of the policy problem at hand.Research Methods/ Statistical Methods,

Using Frontier Models to Mitigate Omitted Variable Bias in Hedonic Pricing Models: A Case Study for Air Quality in BogotĂĄ, Colombia

Hedonic pricing models use property value differentials to value changes in environmental quality. If unmeasured quality attributes of residential properties are correlated with an environmental quality measure of interest, conventional methods for estimating implicit prices will be biased. Because many unmeasured quality measures tend to be asymmetrically distributed across properties, it may be possible to mitigate this bias by estimating a heteroskedastic frontier regression model. This approach is demonstrated for a hedonic price function that values air quality in BogotĂĄ, Colombia.hedonic pricing model, omitted variables, air quality, frontier model

    Economics and Air Pollution

This chapter discusses the relationship between economics and air pollution: first, it presents the main characteristics of the economic growth-environmental pressure debate and introduces the concept of environmental Kuznets curve hypothesis (EKC). As an example of the EKC, the estimated relationship between CO2 emissions and economic growth, using a cross-sectional sample of 152 countries, is reported. Second, the chapter discusses air pollution as a result of a market failure and introduces the main theoretical causes of ambient degradation, acknowledging air pollution externalities as a common problem that leads to overexploitation in the absence of well-defined property rights for the atmosphere. Third, the main instruments for pollution control, including traditional regulation based on standards and the more flexible incentive-based regulation, are presented. Finally, the chapter reviews the main features of cost and benefits related to air pollution emissions

Crop Insurance, Disaster Payments and Land Use Change: The Effect of Sodsaver on Incentives for Grassland Conversion

Subsidized crop insurance may encourage conversion of native grassland to cropland. The Sodsaver provision of the 2008 farm bill could deny crop insurance on converted land in the Prairie Pothole states for 5 years. Supplemental Revenue Assistance payments, which are linked to crop insurance purchases, could also be withheld. Using representative farms, we estimate that Sodsaver would reduce expected crop revenue by up to 8% and expected net return by up to 20%, while increasing the standard deviation of revenue by as much as 6% of market revenue. Analysis based on elasticities from the literature suggests that Sodsaver would reduce grassland conversion by 9% or less.bootstrap, crop insurance, grassland, joint densities, Sodsaver, Supplemental Revenue Assistance, Agricultural and Food Policy, Production Economics, Risk and Uncertainty, Q2,

Igualmente, observamos con interĂ©s las difĂciles relaciones con otras localidades ubicadas en los señorĂos vecinos._______________________________Although fishing has been an essential economic activity along Andalusian west coast from time immemorial, insufficient attention has been paid to its historical reality during the late Middle Ages and early Modern period. In the article that follows, we offer the analysis and transcription of several documents on this subject, which refer to the ancient lordship of Ayamonte in the first half of 16th century. These records show both the lords' interest in controlling the fishing practice and its commercialisation, and the existence of illegal trade through the frontier with Portugal. In addition, we observe the problematic relations with other localities placed in the neighbouring lordships

The history of European general historical dictionaries (German, Dutch, Swedish, French, Italian, Catalan, and Spanish) is reviewed first, and then the present situation of historical dictionaries in the Spanishspeaking world (in Europe and America) is studied, reviewing both general and segmental compilations. Finally, it offers a perspective of the future, listing the challenges that historical lexicography faces at the beginning of the 21st century

The Maritime Delimitation between Turkey and the Libya’s Government of National Accord: another Concern for the European Union?

The complicated physical and political geography of the Eastern Mediterranean makes it a region in which conflicts between parties are always ready to escalate. In this context, the adoption of a Memorandum of Understanding between Turkey and the Libya’s Government of National Accord seem to add fuel to the fire. Apart from the impact on the energy geopolitics of the Eastern Mediterranean, this agreement has raised the concerns of the European Union which considers that it infringes upon the sovereign rights of Greece and cannot produce any legal consequences for an EU member State.LA DELIMITACIÓN MARÍTIMA ENTRE TURQUÍA Y EL GOBIERNO DE ACUERDO NACIONAL DE LIBIA: ÂżOTRA PREOCUPACIÓN PARA LA UNIÓN EUROPEA?La complicada geografĂa fĂsica y polĂtica del MediterrĂĄneo Oriental lo convierte en una regiĂłn en la que los conflictos entre las partes siempre estĂĄn listos para escalar.
