Modelling dependence between frequency and severity of insurance claims
The estimation of the individual loss is an important task to price insurance policies. The standard approach assumes independence between claim frequency and severity, which may not be a realistic assumption. In this text, the dependence between claim counts and claim sizes is explored, in a Generalized Linear Model framework. A Conditional severity model and a Copula model are presented as alternatives to model this dependence and later applied to a data set provided by a Portuguese insurance company. At the end, the comparison with the independence scenario is carried out.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Does earnings quality impact firms’ performance? The case of Portuguese SMEs from the mold sector
Purpose: This work aims to study the impact of earnings quality on firms’ financial performance. Design/methodology/approach: An unbalanced panel data of 237 small and medium-sized Portuguese companies from the mold industry, using 2010-2018 yearly data was analyzed. While most studies focus only on earnings management when assessing earnings quality, in this study six proxies for earnings quality are used, namely accruals quality (a proxy for earnings management), earnings persistence, earnings predictability, earnings smoothness, earnings timeliness, and earnings conservatism. Moreover, two proxies of financial performance are considered, the return on assets and the economic value added. An econometric model was estimated using either a fixed-effects or a random-effects specification to account for the
individual firm-specific effects and ensure heteroscedasticity corrected estimates.
Findings: The results show that managers must be concerned with the quality of reported earnings, as it can affect positively firms’ financial performance, especially regarding accruals quality. Persistence, predictability, smoothness, timeliness, and conservatism are shown not to exert significant influence on financial performance in the sample.
Research limitations/implications: This work contributes not only as a literature review on these thematic but also to firms’ managers and stakeholders, who have information that helps them select strategies that guarantee earnings quality and improve firms’ financial performance.
Originality/value: We proposed an econometric model that studies the relationship between earnings quality (using several proxies for it) and financial performance that can be applied to all companies.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Brookfield.
Abstract: In this paper we evaluate the effectiveness of Metamitron applied in isolation or in combination with naphtalene acetic acid (NAA) and benzyladenine (BA) in thinning fruit Golden delicious apple trees grafted on PAJAM 2 and Brookfield grafted on EM-EMLA 9, with 9 and 6 years of planting, respetively, of orchards located at the experimental station of the IRTA Lleida, experimental field Gimenells.
Metamitron had a marked effect in lowering the rate of photosynthesis for the set of
requirements where it was applied, which resulted in the fall of fruits as well as one-off
increase in the rate of fruit growth.
Of all the methods tested it was found that single applications of metamitron at a
concentration of 110 ppm applied at two different times, namely at 8 and 12 mm diameter
central fruit closely approximate the efficacy demonstrated by applying the mixture
containing metamitron with NAA and BA in the case of cv. Brookfield.
With respect to cv. Golden delicious mode 6-BA + NAA is presenting the fruits of higher
caliber, standing out significantly from other modalities, with an average size of 69.05 mm, on
August 9, 2013. This result is supported by the fact of this method have been also presented
the lowest average number of fruits, with 1.88 fruits per corymb on July 1, 2013.
As those seen in reducing the rate of photosynthesis results we can state that neither the
ANA nor the 6-BA has interference in the rate of photosynthesis in plants and so its effect as
weeding agent has another mode of action that is not the rate reduction photosynthetic.
The low effectiveness of the application of BA isolated with respect to the lowering of the
rate of photosynthesis will be explained by adverse weather conditions that affect much the
action of this active substance that needs a minimum temperature of 18 ° C to be successful
Engineering of tio2 or zno—graphene oxide nanoheterojunctions for hybrid solar cells devices
UID/FIS/00068/2020It is currently of huge importance to find alternatives to fossil fuels to produce clean energy and to ensure the energy demands of modern society. In the present work, two types of hybrid solar cell devices were developed and characterized. The photoactive layers of the hybrid heterojunctions comprise poly (allylamine chloride) (PAH) and graphene oxide (GO) and TiO2 or ZnO films, which were deposited using the layer-by-layer technique and DC-reactive magnetron sputtering, respectively, onto fluorine-doped tin oxide (FTO)-coated glass substrates. Scanning electron microscopy evidenced a homogeneous inorganic layer, the surface morphology of which was dependent on the number of organic bilayers. The electrical characterization pointed out that FTO/(PAH/GO)50/TiO2/Al, FTO/(PAH/GO)30/ZnO/Al, and FTO/(PAH/GO)50/ZnO/Al architectures were the only ones to exhibit a diode behavior, and the last one experienced a decrease in current in a low-humidity environment. The (PAH/GO)20 impedance spectroscopy study further revealed the typical impedance of a parallel RC circuit for a dry environment, whereas in a humid environment, it approached the impedance of a series of three parallel RC circuits, indicating that water and oxygen contribute to other conduction processes. Finally, the achieved devices should be encapsulated to work successfully as solar cells.publishersversionpublishe
do conhecimento.
subsequente desenvolvimento. A simbiose ensino/aprendizagem é abordada no Capítulo 4, o
12).
Nos Anexos, incluem-se alguns dos “Objetos de Aprendizagem” utilizados em “O Continhas”.The major premise of this work stands on the principle of the convenience – or rather, the
conviction of the necessity – of beginning from very early on, that is, from the age of 5/6 years,
stimulating logical-abstract reasoning in the child’s mind by means of mathematical concepts and
algorithms, imparted in the same natural mode by which the young of different animal species
acquire their particular behavior and skills, indispensable for their survival: through observation of
adults and through play. Why shouldn’t it be so with our own species?
Following the positive experience gained from an earlier action in which – in playful and relaxed
surroundings –, pre-schooling children were subjected to the ideas and concepts of mathematics,
we developed an extracurricular project “O Continhas”, implemented by means of “Objetos de
Aprendizagem” (Learning Objects), specially built activities programmed to achieve the intended
goals of transmitting mathematical ideas and developing habits of abstract reasoning.
Acknowledging that the accomplishment of the intended objectives would depend essentially upon
the teachers directly involved with the project, they were subjected to specific training in order to
enable them to apply the “Objetos de Aprendizagem”.
This thesis consists of three distinct parts, the first of which establishes the guiding principles of
our proposal. Thus, Chapter 2 deals with the role of mathematics in the society of knowledge. The
studies on the human brain (Chapter 3) which grant hopes that its exposition to mathematics will
reflect positively on its overall subsequent development. The teaching/learning symbiosis is treated
in Chapter 4, which touching on infant apprenticeship of mathematics, leads to the consideration
of teachers’ formation in that area (Chapter 5). The second part begins with the investigation of the
environment existing in the pre-schooll and four first years of formal learning with respect to
mathematics (Chapters 6 and 7). The last part takes up the constitution of the extracurricular
project “O Continhas” (Chapters 8, 9 and 10), and of the methods purposefully created for the
evaluation of the children’s results (Chapter 11), and, finally, of the conclusions attained, as well
as of the inferences withdrawn up to the present (Chapter 12). In the Annexes are included some
of the “Objetos de Aprendizagem” utilized in the “O Continhas”
Human gingival fibroblasts response to different endodontic sealers: an in vitro study
Endodontic treatment aims to eliminate infection of the root canals and fill the dental pulp space. The biocompatibility studies of the sealers used in root canals obturation are crucial since they are applied in direct contact with periradicular tissues. Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the cytotoxicity of three root canal sealers—AH Plus, Bio MTA+, and Bio C sealer—on immortalized human gingival fibroblasts. Methods: AH Plus, Bio MTA+, and Bio C sealers were evaluated through incubation in real-time and material-conditioned media. Cells were incubated for 24 h and 72 h, at three different concentrations (1, 10, and 100 mg/mL) of each sealer. The cytotoxic activity of the sealers was assessed by Methyl tetrazolium (MTT) and Sulforhodamine B (SRB) assays. Cell morphology and cytogenetic alterations were studied microscopically. Results: MTT and SRB assays revealed similar results within both approaches. Cell culture exposed to sealers through incubation in real-time revealed a cytotoxic effect of AH Plus at 100 mg/mL. Material- conditioned media study revealed a cytotoxic effect of Bio MTA+ and Bio C, increasing with higher compound concentration and reaching 50% with 100 mg/mL. Regarding the cell’s morphology, Bio C sealer revealed a decrease in cell confluence and several morphological changes. AH Plus and Bio MTA+ did not seem to affect the cell confluence however morphology alterations were observed. In the cytogenetic study, a severe decrease of the mitotic index and a large number of chromosomal aberrations were observed. The present study represents an advance in the understanding of the biocompatibility of AH Plus, Bio MTA+, and Bio C sealers. These sealers demonstrated some cytotoxicity, depending on the concentration used. Although more validation studies are still needed, this study brings very relevant results in terms of cytotoxicity, cell morphology, and cytogenetic alterations. Conclusions: These results could help in the selection of the most appropriate compounds to be used in clinical practice as well as to determine the maximum recommended amounts of each sealer. Clinical Relevance: This study highlights the potential cytotoxic effects of three commonly used root canal sealers on human gingival fibroblasts, with varying degrees of impact depending on the concentration used. The results emphasize the importance of careful consideration when selecting and applying these materials in clinical practice.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Assessing the seasonal and spatial dynamics of zooplankton through DNA metabarcoding in a temperate estuary
Zooplankton are key components of estuarine trophic networks. However, routine monitoring is hindered by the difficulty of morphology-based identification. DNA-based methods allow us to circumvent some of these hurdles, providing precise species identifications regardless of the taxonomic expertise of the investigator or the developmental stage of the specimens. However, the process is dependent on the completeness of the reference libraries. In this study, we sought to evaluate the potential of DNA metabarcoding to assess the seasonal (summer, autumn, and early spring) and spatial dynamics of zooplankton (four locations spanning ca. 6 km) in the Lima estuary (NW Portugal). Two genetic markers were used: the cytochrome c oxidase subunit I and the V4 hypervariable region of the ribosomal 18S rRNA genes. Overall, 327 species were recovered, and both markers displayed minute overlap (7% were detected with both markers). Species richness, composition, and taxonomic distinctness were majorly influenced by the season, with a declining tendency from summer (highest number of exclusive species, n = 74) to spring. Second to season, the taxa composition was influenced by spatial variation where the most downstream site displayed the highest number of exclusive species, n = 53. A total of 16 non-indigenous species were detected using metabarcoding, but only one (Austrominus modestus) has been documented out in the estuary. In conclusion, both the seasonal and spatial gradients influenced the recovered richness, composition, and taxonomic distinctness, confirming the great aptitude of DNA metabarcoding for providing higher density monitoring and shedding new light on the composition and dynamics of complex zooplankton communities.FCT -Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia(undefined
