A Menu About Me: A Next Generation Science Standards Aligned 9-12 Life Science Curriculum Adapted for Students With Limited or Interrupted Formal Education

    Get PDF
In order to face the challenges of a rapidly changing world, it is imperative that thinkers with diverse backgrounds and perspectives are supported in the development of their scientific skills and voice. However, very few, if any, high school life science curricular resources are available that are specifically adapted with the assets and needs of students with limited or interrupted formal education (SLIFE) in mind. The widely adopted Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) are uniquely designed to center the learner’s authentic thought process and pre-existing funds of knowledge–a framework which also happens to be aligned with the strengths of SLIFE students. The curriculum created for this project combines 9-12 NGSS life science standards with best practices for SLIFE students. It utilizes extensive opportunities for students to connect their learning to their rich personal experiences surrounding the biology of food science, while also providing appropriate scaffolding for developing their academic skills and English language proficiency. The 5E framework was employed to ensure fidelity to the NGSS tenet of inquiry-based learning, while the mutually adaptive learning paradigm (MALP®) was implemented to guide best practices for engaging SLIFE students. The project includes four weeks of deeply detailed lesson plans with complete student resources, and an additional blueprint for ten weeks of planned curricula without student resources. The curriculum is intended for use in high school biology classes that have adopted, or are intending to adopt NGSS, and which serve SLIFE students. However, the curriculum is flexible and could easily be adapted to the user’s setting and student population. The goal of this project is to nurture the mutually beneficial relationship between the community of SLIFE students, and the community of science, at large, through the power of storytelling and exploration

La descolectivización de la agricultura en Armenia o las dificultades de la transición post soviética

The agriculture of Armenia, a former Soviet Republic, has been affected by the disaster brought about by the falling of the URSS. The strong descolletivization of the agricultural sector has marked the beginning of a period of post-collective transition. Over ten years after the independence, both the economy and particularly the agricultural sector still suffer serious dysfunction, worsened by the historical heritage of genocide, the Karabagh conflict and the blockade of the border. Even so, certain local dynamics confirm the strong agricultural potential of this small Christian state at the south 01 the Caucasus

'Topos' and Utopia in Evgenios Voulgaris' Life and Work (1716-1806)

One of the central figures of the Enlightenment in the Greek world, Evgenios Voulgaris (1716-1806) has been criticised for becoming increasingly reactionary in later years. This article argues that an understanding of the importance of place and movement in Voulgaris' world -as also in his world-view- helps explain elements of continuity and change in his writings more generally.Rather than a shift from enlightenment to reaction, the article depicts a slow progression from an early Voulgaris intent -both in his writings and in the Athos Academy- on fusing Orthodoxy and Enlightenment, to a later Voulgaris less intent on creating a rational system out of the many influences on his thought and more insistent on the creation of a place for the Graikoi, liberated from the Ottomans. The complex inter-relation between the geographic, political and social conditions and the thought processes of one particular individual are examined. Given these conditions, and bearing in mind the dangers of a crude geographic determinism, Voulgaris' attempts to reconcile, indeed create a rational system out of the many influences on his thought, present considerable interest but were inevitably unlikely to succeed

Stratigraphy and geological structure of the Lavrion area (Attica, Greece)

    Get PDF
The geological mapping of the Lavrion area lead to a revision of the lithostratigraphic subdivision and the recognition of three superposed tectonic units. The lower unit, the so-called autochthonous system, consists of a Triassic - Jurassic metamorphic Pelagonian series, a disconformity related to the Eohellenic orogenic phase, and a Tithonian - Lower Cretaceous non-metamorphic transgressive cover. Upon the lower unit, the "phyllite" nappe lies (middle unit), having on the top some remnants of a non-metamorphic Pelagonian nappe (upper unit)

BDA Enhancement Methodology using Situational Parameter Adjustments

    Get PDF
In the context of close ground combat, the perception of Battle Damage Assessment (BDA) is closely linked with a soldier’s engagement decisions and has significant effects on the battlefield. Perceived BDA is also one of the most complex and uncertain processes facing the soldier in live combat. As a result, the modeling and simulation community has yet to adequately model the perceived BDA process in combat models. This research effort examines the BDA process from a perception standpoint and proposes a methodology to collect the pertinent data and model this perception in the Army’s current force-on-force model, CASTFOREM. A subject matter expert survey design and a method to model the BDA process as a Discrete Time Markov Chain are proposed. Bayesian inference is used to update probability distributions at each time step considering the Situational Parameters available to the soldier at the time of an assessment. Comparisons between known simulation distributions and those developed from simulated survey responses suggest an adequate number of subject matter experts to be polled
