CAN SOWING SPEED AFFECT CORN YIELD?

    Get PDF
In sowing operation, it is essential to control the factors that can affect the quality of seed and fertilizer deposition. These factors range from the correct choice of dosing mechanisms to machine regulation and operating speed control. The present research aimed to analyze the influence of sowing speed on the productive performance of the corn crop. The study was carried out at Fazenda São Geraldo, in the municipality of Boracéia, São Paulo. Four operating speeds 3, 5, 7 and 9 km h-1 were applied in a seeder, with a mechanical horizontal seed meter. The experimental design was carried out in strips. The results showed that sowing operational speed directly influences the final corn yield. There is a positive correlation between sowing speed and reduction in seedling emergence. The speed of 3.0 km h-1 showed the best results for seed deposition and yield. The speeds of 5, 7 and 9 km h-1 presented a reduction of 14.8, 42.5 and 67.2 bags per hectare

The Nucleus of the Solitary Tract → Nucleus Paragigantocellularis → Locus Coeruleus → CA1 region of dorsal hippocampus pathway is important for consolidation of object recognition memory.

Abstract The Nucleus of the Solitary Tract (NTS) receives gustatory and visceral information from afferent fibers in the vagus and projects to the Nucleus Paragigantocellularis (PGi), among several other brain region. PGi sends excitatory fibers, mostly glutamatergic, to the Locus Coeruleus (LC). In turn, LC sends noradrenergic projections to many areas of the brain, including hippocampus (HIPP) and amygdala. Here we show that the NTS–PGi–LC–HIPP pathway is required for the memory consolidation of object recognition (OR). The inhibition of NTS, PGi or LC by microinfusion of the GABA A receptor agonist, muscimol, into each of these structures up to 3 h after object recognition memory training impairs its consolidation as assessed in a retention test 24 h later. The posttraining microinfusion of the β-blocker, timolol into CA1 mimics this effect. Intra-CA1 NA microinfusion does not alter retention per se , but reverses the disruptive effect of muscimol given into NTS, PGi or LC. This effect of NA is shared by a microinfusion of NMDA into LC. These results support the idea that the NTS–PGi–LC–CA1 pathway contributes to memory consolidation through a β-noradrenergic mechanism in CA1

Phase transitions in hard-core lattice gases on the honeycomb lattice

We study lattice gas systems on the honeycomb lattice where particles exclude neighboring sites up to order k (k = 1,..., 5) from being occupied by another particle. Monte Carlo simulations were used to obtain phase diagrams and characterize phase transitions as the system orders at high packing fractions. For systems with first-neighbors exclusion (1NN), we confirm previous results suggesting a continuous transition in the two-dimensional Ising universality class. Exclusion up to second neighbors (2NN) lead the system to a two-step melting process where, first, a high-density columnar phase undergoes a first-order phase transition with nonstandard scaling to a solidlike phase with short-range ordered domains and, then, to fluidlike configurations with no sign of a second phase transition. 3NN exclusion, surprisingly, shows no phase transition to an ordered phase as density is increased, staying disordered even to packing fractions up to 0.98. The 4NN model undergoes a continuous phase transition with critical exponents close to the three-state Potts model. The 5NN system undergoes two first-order phase transitions, both with nonstandard scaling. We, also, propose a conjecture concerning the possibility of more than one phase transition for systems with exclusion regions further than 5NN based on geometrical aspects of symmetries

Effect of an educational game on student´s learning: different approaches for evaluation

[EN] The aim of this work was to evaluate the effect of an educational game about cardiac cycle, used as replacing or complementing activity for traditional teaching methods, on the learning of physiology students by using different evaluation approaches. The comparisons were made between the grades obtained in pre- and post-tests applied before and after the use of the game, and between the number of correct answers of groups that performed an activity with the puzzle or had a lecture or reading, in the same or different careers. In all these approaches, the students who performed the activity with the educational game had a better performance in the assessment tests in comparison with those who did not use the educational game. This effect was observed when the puzzle replaced a lecture or reading activity and also when it was used as a complementary activity after a previous lecture. In conclusion, the results of the present study showed that one educational game used as active teaching-learning method can improve the students’ learning, and that its effect on student´s learning can be evaluated by different approaches by the teacher during the classroom routine.Marcondes, F.; Cardozo, L.; Mello-Carpes, P.; Montrezor, L. Foreign direct investment in the G-20: to what extent do institutions matter?

    Get PDF
Purpose – This study aims to identify to what extent the economic factor effect is more salient in shaping inward foreign direct investment (IFDI) than are institutional factors in G-20 inflow patterns. Design/methodology/approach – Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution (TOPSIS) method was applied using the World Bank Governance and Development Indicators, followed by a panel data technique over the period 2005-2015 to estimate the connections between the different dimensions of economics, institutions and IFDI in the G-20. Findings – Results showed that countries with better economic performance contrasting with the governance indicators are more effective at attracting IFDI. However, the correlation between FDI intensity and governance indicators has been found relatively weak, which may suggest a more controversial role of institutions as determinants of IFDI. Research limitations/implications – This quantitative approach uses a country-level set of variables; therefore, the authors suggest the development of more firm-level analysis of the impact of institutions. Also, the limitation of the TOPSIS method itself is based on heuristic assumptions. Practical implications – The main findings point to a relatively low impact of institutions on IFDI. The authors suggest that the global financial crisis has changed the rationale of decision-making by multinational companies. Originality/value – The originality of the present study was to apply a multi criteria decision-making technique on FDI’s analysis combined with institutional data

The study aims to investigate the perception of librarians working at UFSC University Library, concerning the relevance of the notion or concept of social networks for their performance in everyday life. The BU, a research environment, is located in the municipality of Florianópolis, Santa Catarina State. The survey was qualitative, having as theoretical and methodological basis the sociology of knowledge, especially the constructivist and interactionist approaches, as well as the theory of social representations. The analysis technique to approach the speeches collected through interviews, was the Collective Subject Discourse (CSD). From the librarians. speeches, synthesized in the DSC, it was observed that there are multiple definitions of social networks, which allows characterizing the perception of society and as ambiguous in what concerns this concept. The deviation of the classic meaning of social networks provided by the social sciences derives from the changes produced by the intensive use of modern information and communication technologies. It was noted, in the words of librarians, that the idea of individuality and community is growing every day, disintegrated by the media. It was evident, in the creator and socializing environment of the library, the role of social interaction in building a society more aware of their actions
