    Este artículo se busca identificar la transformación de los roles femeninos ejemplificados en tres revistas femeninas aparecidas entre 1950 y 1999 en la ciudad de México: Madame, Vanidades y Cosmopolitan.     Epileptic seizure prediction using machine learning techniques

    Epileptic seizures affect about 1% of the world’s population, thus making it the fourth most common neurological disease, this disease is considered a neurological disorder characterized by the abnormal activity of the brain. Part of the population suffering from this disease is unable to avail themselves of any treatment, as this treatment has no beneficial effect on the patient. One of the main concerns associated with this disease is the damage caused by uncontrollable seizures. This damage affects not only the patient himself but also the people around him. With this situation in mind, the goal of this thesis is, through methods of Machine Learning, to create an algorithm that can predict epileptic seizures before they occur. To predict these seizures, the electroencephalogram (EEG) will be employed, since it is the most commonly used method for diagnosing epilepsy. Of the total 23 channels available, only 8 will be used, due to their location. When a seizure occurs, besides the visible changes in the EEG signal, at the moment of the seizure, the alterations before and after the epileptic seizure are also noticeable. These stages have been named in the literature: • Preictal: the moment before the epileptic seizure; • Ictal: the moment of the seizure; • Postictal: the moment after the seizure; • Interictal: space of time between seizures. The goal of the predictive algorithm will be to classify the different classes and study different classification problems by using supervised learning techniques, more precisely a classifier. By performing this classification when indications are detected that a possible epileptic seizure will occur, the patient will then be warned so that he can prepare for the seizure.Crises epiléticas afetam cerca de 1% da população mundial, tornando-a assim a quarta doença neurológica mais comum. Esta é considerada uma doença caracterizada pela atividade anormal do cérebro. Parte da população que sofre desta condição não consegue recorrer a qualquer tratamento, pois este não apresenta qualquer efeito benéfico no paciente. Uma das principais preocupações associadas com este problema são os danos causados pelas convulsões imprevisíveis. Estes danos não afetam somente o próprio paciente, como também as pessoas que o rodeiam. Com esta situação em mente, o objetivo desta dissertação consiste em, através de métodos de Machine Learning, criar um algoritmo capaz de prever as crises epiléticas antes da sua ocorrência. Para proceder à previsão destas convulsões, será utilizado o eletroencefalograma (EEG), uma vez que é o método mais usado para o diagnóstico de epilepsia. Serão utilizados apenas 8 dos 23 canais disponíveis, devido à sua localização. Quando ocorre uma crise, além das alterações visíveis no sinal EEG, não só no momento da crise, são também notáveis alterações antes e após a convulsão. A estas fases a literatura nomeou: • Pre-ictal: momento anterior à crise epilética; • Ictal: momento da convulsão; • Pós-ictal: momento posterior à crise; • Interictal: espaço de tempo entre convulsões. O objetivo do algoritmo preditivo será fazer a classificação das diferentes classes e o estudo de diferentes problemas de classificação, através do uso de técnicas de machine learning, mais precisamente um classificador.     A data-driven user steering algorithm for optimizing user experience in multi-tier LTE networks

    Multi-tier cellular networks are a cost-effective solution for capacity enhancement in urban scenarios. In these networks, effective handover schemes are required to assign users to the most adequate layer. In this paper, a data-driven self-tuning algorithm for user steering is proposed to improve the overall Quality of Experience (QoE) in multi-carrier Long Term Evolution (TE) networks. Unlike classical approaches, user steering is achieved by changing Reference Signal Received Quality (RSRQ) based inter-frequency handover margins. To drive the tuning process, a novel indicator showing throughput changes in the vicinity of handovers is derived from connection traces. Method assessment is carried out in a dynamic system-level LTE simulator implementing a real multi-carrier scenario. Results show that the proposed algorithm significantly improves QoE figures obtained with a classical inter-frequency handover scheme based on Reference Signal Received Power (RSRP) measurements.Universidad de Málaga.     Libros que muerden: una colección que resplandece

    Al cumplirse 30 años del último golpe cívico-militar en el año 2006, la Asociación Civil La Grieta de la ciudad de La Plata dio inicio a la conformación de una colección de libros que aglutina las publicaciones destinadas al público infantil y juvenil que fueron censuradas, como parte del plan sistemático de represión en los ámbitos cultural y educativo denominado "Operación Claridad". Esa colección se transformó en un proyecto con múltiples aristas, denominado "Libros que muerden". Su objetivo principal es ejercer la reflexión política y la construcción de la memoria colectiva a partir de la reconstrucción de un corpus que se encontraba, de algún modo, "perdido", y que permite revisar cómo actuó la censura en el campo de la infancia, cómo había sido pensada la infancia, la juventud y la cultura durante el "proceso de reorganización nacional". En esta ponencia nos proponemos reflexionar en torno a algunas de las preguntas que se plantearon como disparadores para esta mesa, en la certeza de que la colección Libros que muerden es una fuente primaria para el abordaje de la historia del libro, las editoriales, la lectura y la censura. Daremos a conocer la experiencia de conformación de la colección, la recuperación de "piezas perdidas", la difusión y trabajo con la comunidad, las instancias de reflexión y estudio con las que trabaja el grupo, los debates internos entre poner el libro a la mano y su resguardo y preservación, los modos de exponer los libros y de abordarlos con públicos diversos y los ejes sobre los que se trabaja para contribuir a la conformación de una memoria colectiva y aportar al estudio de la censura y sus secuelas en nuestro país

    Complement activation and protein adsorption by carbon nanotubes

    As a first step to validate the use of carbon nanotubes as novel vaccine or drug delivery devices, their interaction with a part of the human immune system, complement, has been explored. Haemolytic assays were conducted to investigate the activation of the human serum complement system via the classical and alternative pathways. Western blot and sodium dodecyl sulphate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE) techniques were used to elucidate the mechanism of activation of complement via the classical pathway, and to analyse the interaction of complement and other plasma proteins with carbon nanotubes. We report for the first time that carbon nanotubes activate human complement via both classical and alternative pathways. We conclude that complement activation by nanotubes is consistent with reported adjuvant effects, and might also in various circumstances promote damaging effects of excessive complement activation, such as inflammation and granuloma formation. C1q binds directly to carbon nanotubes. Protein binding to carbon nanotubes is highly selective, since out of the many different proteins in plasma, very few bind to the carbon nanotubes.     Modelling Slice Performance in Radio Access Networks through Supervised Learning

    In 5G systems, the Network Slicing (NS) feature allows to deploy several logical networks customized for specific verticals over a common physical infrastructure. To make the most of this feature, cellular operators need models reflecting performance at slice level for re-dimensioning the Radio Access Network (RAN). Throughput is often regarded as a key perfor- mance metric due its strong impact on users demanding enhanced mobility broadband services. In this work, we present the first comprehensive analysis tackling slice throughput estimation in the down link of RAN-sliced networks through Supervised Learning (SL), based on information collected in the operations support system. The considered SL algorithms include support vector regression, k-nearest neighbors, ensemble methods based on decision trees and neural networks. All these algorithms are tested in two NS scenarios with single-service and multi-service slices. To this end, synthetic datasets with performance indicators and connection traces are generated with a system-level simulator emulating the activity of a live cellular network. Results show that the best model (i.e., combination of SL algorithm and input features) to estimate slice throughput may vary depending on the NS scenario.
