Pandemic effects in the Solow growth model

We show how diseases can affect economic growth in a Solow growth model, with population growth and no technical progress, but modified to include a saving rate that depends on the individual health status. We successively insert this model into the SIS (susceptible–infected–susceptible) and SIR (susceptible–infected–recovered) models of disease spreading. In these two models, the spread of the infection proceeds according to the so-called basic reproductive number. This number determines in which of the two possible equilibria, the disease-free or the pandemic equilibrium, the economy ends. Investment option under CIR interest rates

We analyze extensively the characteristics of the solution to an irreversible investment decision when the only source of uncertainty comes from interest rates. They are assumed to be driven by the popular Cox–Ingersoll–Ross (CIR) stochastic process. Pricing executive stock optons under employment shocks

We obtain explicit expressions for the subjective, objective and market value of perpetual executive stock options (ESOs) under exogenous employment shocks driven by an independent Poisson process. Previously, we obtain the executive's optimal exercise policy from the subjective valuation that is necessary for the objective one, or fair value. The perpetual ESO is compared with the true finite maturity ESO finding that the approximation is reasonably good. To illustrate the usefulness of the objective valuation for accounting purposes, we analyze the statistical distribution of the fair value when there is uncertainty about the employment shock intensity. Does stock return predictability affect ESO fair value?

Executive Stock Options (ESOs) are modified American options that cannot be valued using standard methods. With a few exceptions, the literature has discussed the ESO fair value by assuming unpredictable stock returns which are not supported by the available empirical evidence. In this paper we obtain the fair value of American ESOs when stock returns are predictable and, specifically, driven by the trending Ornstein–Uhlenbeck process of Lo and Wang (1995). We solve the executive’s portfolio allocation problem for a simple buy-and-hold strategy when his wealth can be distributed between a risk-free asset and a market portfolio. This problem is jointly solved with the executive’s optimal exercise policy. We find that executives tend to wait longer the higher the predictability, independently of the composition of executive’s asset menu. We have also analyzed the implications under the FAS123R proposals for the ESO fair value and found that, even for low autocorrelations, there is a meaningful mispricing when unpredictable returns are erroneously assumed.Angel León and Antoni Vaello-Sebastiá acknowledge the financial support from the Spanish Ministry for Science and Innovation through the Grants ECO2011-29751 and ECO2010-18567 respectively

Energy Reconstruction of Electromagnetic Showers from π0 Decays with the ICARUS T600 Liquid Argon TPC

We discuss the ICARUS T600 detector capabilities in electromagnetic shower reconstruction through the analysis of a sample of 212 events, coming from the 2001 Pavia surface test run, of hadronic interactions leading to the production of π0 mesons. Methods of shower energy and shower direction measurements were developed and the invariant mass of the photon pairs was reconstructed. The (γ,γ) invariant mass was found to be consistent with the value of the π0 mass. The resolution of the reconstructed π0 mass was found to be equal to 27.3%. An improved analysis, carried out in order to clean the full event sample from the events measured in the crowded environment, mostly due to the trigger conditions, gave a π0 mass resolution of 16.1%, significantly better than the one evaluated for the full event sample. The trigger requirement of the coincidence of at least four photo-multiplier signals favored the selection of events with a strong pile up of cosmic ray tracks and interactions. Hence a number of candidate π0 events were heavily contaminated by other tracks and had to be rejected. Monte Carlo simulations of events with π0 production in hadronic and neutrino interactions confirmed the validity of the shower energy and shower direction reconstruction methods applied to the real data.We are glad of the financial and technical support of our funding agencies and in particular of the Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare (INFN). Structural Basis of the Inhibition of GH1 β-glucosidases by Multivalent Pyrrolidine Iminosugars

The synthesis of multivalent pyrrolidine iminosugars via CuAAC click reaction between different pyrrolidine-azide derivatives and tri- or hexavalent alkynyl scaffolds is reported. The new multimeric compounds, together with the monomeric reference, were evaluated as inhibitors against two homologous GH1 β-glucosidases (BglA and BglB from Paenibacillus polymyxa). The multivalent inhibitors containing an aromatic moiety in the linker between the pyrrolidine and the scaffold inhibited the octameric BglA (µM range) but did not show affinity against the monomeric BglB, despite the similarity between the active site of both enzymes. A modest multivalent effect (rp/n = 12) was detected for the hexavalent inhibitor 12. Structural analysis of the complexes between the monomeric and the trimeric iminosugar inhibitors (4 and 10) and BglA showed the insertion of the inhibitors at the active site of BglA, confirming a competitive mode of inhibition as indicated by enzyme kinetics. Additionally, structural comparison of the BglA/4 complex with the reported BglB/2F-glucose complex illustrates the key determinants responsible for the inhibitory effect and explains the reasons of the inhibition of BglA and the no inhibition of BglB. Una visión de 360 grados sobre la actitud hacia la diversidad en el entorno universitario

Todos somos diferentes y esa diversidad enriquece la vida. El problema comienza cuando la diversidad desemboca en desigualdad. Una sociedad justa debe prestar atención hacia la diversidad desde todos los ámbitos, especialmente el educativo. La mayoría de las universidades de España cuenta con servicios de atención al alumnado con discapacidad. Estos desarrollan toda una serie de acciones de asesoramiento y apoyo a la comunidad universitaria, para eliminar las barreras y facilitar su integración y su participación. Además de realizar adaptaciones curriculares y facilitar recursos físicos, para que las personas con discapacidad se integren plenamente, es necesario prestar atención a las relaciones interpersonales que se establecen entre todos los miembros de la comunidad universitaria. El presente estudio trata de mostrar una visión de 360º sobre la actitud hacia la diversidad. Para ello se ha recogido la visión de estudiantes con discapacidad y también la de sus compañeros. Pero los alumnos son sólo una parte de la ecuación. Con el objetivo de obtener una visión más completa de la situación actual, también se ha entrevistado a los docentes. Dentro de este colectivo, se ha contado con la participación de profesores que han impartido docencia a estudiantes con discapacidad y también con la visión de los docentes con discapacidad

Intestinal obstruction by deep enteric endometriosis: case report and literature review

Deep endometriosis (DE) is an uncommon cause of bowel obstruction; preoperative diagnosis is a challenging task due to its rarity and pathological confirmation. Surgery is the appropriate treatment and complications are common. A 26-year-old Latin female was admitted to emergency department with 72 hours history of abdominal pain associated with inability to pass stool or gas, vomiting and nausea. Abdominal distention and pain without acute abdomen signs. Laboratory tests reported normal. Abdominal contrast-enhanced computed tomography showed distal small bowel obstruction. Patient underwent exploratory laparotomy with segmental resection bearing ileal strictures and Brook´s ileostomy was performed. Postoperative course of patient was uneventful and after pathology report treatment with dienogest was established. DE remains challenging entity to treat, medical treatment can reduce symptoms, but surgical resection is required. Bowel resection is reserved for mayor stenosis lesions. Anastomotic leakage is frequent. Surgery represents the definitive treatment for bowel obstruction by DE. Resection improves pain and intestinal symptoms. Recurrence, stenosis, and anastomotic leakage rates vary across the studies. Surgical and medical treatment should be considered

Vertidos tóxicos al río Guadiamar: propuestas técnicas para su corrección

Inmediatamente de producirse el vertido tóxico al río Guadiamar, el Grupo T.A.R. se lanzó sin pensarlo dos veces a la búsqueda de soluciones técnicas a un panorama desolador y de efectos desconocidos, todos ellos amenazantes. El ácido “se comía el suelo inundado” por la riada, el agua retenida en Entremuros a pH 3, y con un enorme contenido de metales pesados, ocupaba una extensión de kilómetros. Nos hundimos en el agua hasta el cuello, y cuando nos cubría cogimos la barca, metimos el río a pedazos en nuestro laboratorio, para trabajar todas las hipótesis, ensayar todas las posibilidades. Peleando con la realidad le sacamos datos al Guadiamar, diseñamos actuaciones, poniéndole ingeniería a cuantas hipótesis nos planteaba la situación. En primera fila observamos las mejores actuaciones que nadie diseñó. El propio río, activando sus defensas naturales, mejoró la calidad del agua retenida en el dique de Entremuros subiendo el pH y precipitando los metales pesados. Los mecanismos de entrada de los metales pesados en la cadena trófica parecían ser lentos, dando tiempo a que la retirada de los lodos tóxicos llevada a cabo por la Administración fuera eficaz y diera tiempo a realizar tanto esfuerzo. Aunque el Guadiamar ha trabajado muy duro en su propia recuperación, con su ayuda hemos elaborado una gran cantidad de propuestas técnicas; unas para actuaciones de emergencia, otras a corto, medio y largo plazo. También hemos dado forma a un Plan frente a las previsibles avenidas de este primer otoño después del vertido. Nuestro objetivo ha sido poner a disposición soluciones preparadas para todo tipo de problemas, en primera o en segunda instancia. Prevenir no solo una o dos contingencias, se ha tratado de estar preparado para la mayor cantidad de eventualidades posibles. Por ello algunas serán utilizables, otras estarán en reserva, y muchas irían al cajón de los papeles. Pero ahí están por si acaso. Este libro recoge los trabajos de campo, los ensayos de laboratorio y la ingeniería desarrollada en los primeros cuatro meses. Durante el siguiente preparamos la edición del mismo, mientras, en paralelo, continuábamos en el trabajo experimental y el diseño. Cuando se cumpla el quinto mes, el 25 de Septiembre de 1998, lo presentaremos, ciento cincuenta días después... Con la financiación de la Diputación de Sevilla hemos preparado la primera edición en formato CD Rom e Internet, con muy poco coste para acceder a su contenido. En poco tiempo saldrá la edición en papel, con la misma financiación que la primera. Nos gustaría que este documento fuera entendido como lo que es, en nuestra opinión, una llamada urgente al debate de las ideas. Tratamos de ofrecer la información necesaria y el foro donde recoger las propuestas que seguramente muchos pueden aportar sin saber como transmitir sus experiencias. El Grupo de Tratamiento de Aguas Residuales (T.A.R.) abre con este libro la MESA DE DISCUSIÓN, para buscar un poco de luz, avanzar en las soluciones técnicas a la inmensa tarea de recuperar el río Guadiamar. El libro presenta lagunas, unas por la enorme prisa, otra por falta de datos, muchas por nuestra escasez de conocimientos. Dicen en España que “lo mejor es enemigo de lo bueno”...,y nos gustaría recoger ideas hoy mejor que mañana, que podría ser tarde. Nos comprometemos a seguir trabajando en soluciones técnicas, innovaciones tecnológicas e investigación aplicada a la recuperación del Guadiamar, a conocer lo ocurrido y su remedio. Nos comprometemos a publicar de la misma forma los resultados obtenidos, de manera que la discusión y el debate sigan siempre abiertos. El grupo T.A.R. podría ser un punto de intercambio de conocimientos universal, abierto, respetuoso y tolerante, universitario en definitiva, y por tanto útil en el cumplimiento de sus obligaciones. La primera necesidad de responder urgentemente, está dando paso a unas actuaciones programadas, a medida de los efectos de las correcciones introducidas. Deben instaurarse políticas de prevención y nuevas actuaciones para recuperar el Guadiamar, mejorar urgentemente las condiciones del entorno. Aprender de las soluciones adoptadas y generar mejores prácticas, puede ser una buena conclusión del trabajo realizado por tanta gente. Lo que empezó siendo una carrera de velocidad se nos convierte en un maratón, ya no hay que correr explosivamente, hay que mantener un ritmo en la carrera; hay que persistir en el esfuerzo todos los días durante mucho tiempo.
