Variational approach to the Hubbard model in a C60 cluster
5 págs.; 4 figs.; 3 tabs.We propose a computational scheme for the Hubbard model in the C60 cluster in which the interaction with the Fermi sea of charges added to the neutral molecule is switched on sequentially. This is applied to the calculation of the balance of charging energies, within a low-energy truncation of the space of states which produces moderate errors for an intermediate range of the interaction strength. ©1996 American Physical SocietyPeer Reviewe

Integrating business, social, and environmental goals in open innovation through partner selection
Although collaborative networks (CN) are widespread in academia and have come to be even more used in corporations all over the world, they still face several challenges on behalf of the new product development (NPD) context, especially in regard to the selection of the CN’s right partner. This becomes even more evident when it comes to promoting sustainable development goals within a CN’s activities, by selecting the right partners with a wide consensus from a CN’s management board, avoiding, therefore, the subjectivity around managers’ perception of a CN’s partner selection. Therefore, this work attempts to answer this problem, by presenting a soft-com-puting-based framework, to support the managers’ board on partner search and selection. The method presented here is further assessed by using a case study, based on the development of a green product, where, according to the obtained results, it is demonstrated that the proposed approach is extremely effective for partner selection, by assessing and prioritizing each candidate involved. The most suitable candidate that fulfills the CN’s requirements is then selected to be integrated as a future partner.publishersversionpublishe
Tissue pressure of oxygen (PtiO2) monitoring allows knowing the tissue injuries implications,
and the diagnosis of secondary lesions in the patient with craneoencephalic traumatism. This
monitoring method detects physiopathologic changes brought about by neurotraumatic
injuries. The objective of our contribution is to describe and analyze this specific type of
monitoring and the nurse cares with relationship to the cases taken care of in our unit,
according to our experience. A Nurse’s Record Card has been developed, containing the patient's name, diagnosis, medical history number, catheter type, schedules, etc. In this way,
the possible complications derived from the catheter and from the patient's own development
will be avoided, and nursing quality care will be [email protected]
Independent early predictors of mortality in polytrauma patients: a prospective, observational, longitudinal study
OBJECTIVES: Trauma is an important public health issue and associated with substantial socioeconomic impacts and major adverse clinical outcomes. No single study has previously investigated the predictors of mortality across all stages of care (pre-hospital, emergency room, surgical center and intensive care unit) in a general trauma population. This study was designed to identify early predictors of mortality in severely injured polytrauma patients across all stages of care to provide a better understanding of the physiologic changes and mechanisms by which to improve care in this population. METHODS: A longitudinal, prospective, observational study was conducted between 2010 and 2013 in São Paulo, Brazil. Patients submitted to high-energy trauma were included. Exclusion criteria were as follows: injury severity scor
Dielectric and electrochemical properties of sustainable concrete
It is planned to improve the durability of reinforced concrete structures and the total or partial replacement of their components by the use of recyclable materials; as strategies to contribute to the concrete industry sustainability. The electrical resistivity and its relationship with the microstructure and electrochemical corrosion resistance in reinforced concrete manufactured with sustainable characteristics, that is, with recycled aggregates and supplementary cementitious materials; was evaluated in this study. The electrical resistivity in reinforced concretes is closely related to the microstructure of the cementitious matrix, and with the pore structure and distribution. As a consequence of the their components nature, it is assumed that the proposed sustainable concretes present different microstructure and porosity than the conventional concretes; because of this, the electrical and electrochemical response of those systems was analyzed with the help of the electrochemical impedance spectroscopy technique.Postprint (published version
Sun effects in 2D aperture synthesis radiometry imaging and their cancellation
The Microwave Imaging Radiometer by Aperture
Synthesis (MIRAS) is the single payload of the European Space
Agency’s (ESA) Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity (SMOS) Earth
Explorer Opportunity mission. MIRAS will be the first two-dimensional
aperture synthesis radiometer for earth observation.
Two-dimensional aperture synthesis radiometers can generate
brightness temperature images by a Fourier synthesis process
without mechanical antenna steering. To do so and have the
necessary wide swath for earth observation, the array is formed by
small and low directive antennas, which do not attenuate enough
bright noise sources that may interfere with the measurements.
This study analyzes the impact of the radio-frequency emission
from the sun in the SMOS mission, reviews the basic image
reconstruction algorithms, and proposes a technique to minimize
sun effects.Postprint (published version
Carbonation rate and reinforcing steel corrosion of concretes with recycled concrete aggregates and supplementary cementing materials
Because of the significant environmental impact that the concrete production causes, and as sustainability contribution for this industry; presently some improvements are being implemented in its durability and its components are been replaced for alternative recyclable materials. Concrete carbonation is one of the main causes of reinforcement electrochemical corrosion. Coarse Recycled Concrete Aggregates (RCA) and Supplementary Cementing Materials (SCM) such as fly ash and silica fume were used to produce durable and environmentally friendly concrete and for the evaluation of its carbonation depth and carbonation-induced reinforcement corrosion when it is exposed to accelerated conditions. The depth of carbonation was observed by spraying a phenolphthalein solution on the fresh broken concrete surface. The corrosion rates of steel embedded in these concretes have been measured by the lineal polarization resistance technique. The results indicate that to use RCA and SCM increase the carbonation depth and corrosion current density.Postprint (published version
Non-targeted metabolomic biomarkers and metabotypes of type 2 diabetes: A cross-sectional study of PREDIMED trial participants
Aim. - To characterize the urinary metabolomic fingerprint and multi-metabolite signature associated with type 2 diabetes (T2D), and to classify the population into metabotypes related to T2D. Methods. - A metabolomics analysis using the 1 H-NMR-based, non-targeted metabolomic approach was conducted to determine the urinary metabolomic fingerprint of T2D compared with non-T2D participants in the PREDIMED trial. The discriminant metabolite fingerprint was subjected to logistic regression analysis and ROC analyses to establish and to assess the multi-metabolite signature of T2D prevalence, respectively. Metabotypes associated with T2D were identified using the k-means algorithm. Results. - A total of 33 metabolites were significantly different (P < 0.05) between T2D and non-T2D participants. The multi-metabolite signature of T2D comprised high levels of methylsuccinate, alanine, dimethylglycine and guanidoacetate, and reduced levels of glutamine, methylguanidine, 3-hydroxymandelate and hippurate, and had a 96.4% AUC, which was higher than the metabolites on their own and glucose. Amino-acid and carbohydrate metabolism were the main metabolic alterations in T2D, and various metabotypes were identified in the studied population. Among T2D participants, those with a metabotype of higher levels of phenylalanine, phenylacetylglutamine, p-cresol and acetoacetate had significantly higher levels of plasma glucose. Conclusion. - The multi-metabolite signature of T2D highlights the altered metabolic fingerprint associated mainly with amino-acid, carbohydrate and microbiota metabolism. Metabotypes identified in this patient population could be related to higher risk of long-term cardiovascular events and therefore require further studies. Metabolomics is a useful tool for elucidating the metabolic complexity and interindividual variation in T2D towards the development of stratified precision nutrition and medicin
