My task in this paper is to alert the reader to a culture war that is raging among us right here in Europe. This is not a war between religious fundamentalism and Enlightenment, nor between nationalism and global solidarity. It is a war we can think of, in Kierkegaardian terms, as the conflict between an aesthetic and a moral approach to life. But for the now I would like to present it in more concrete, historical terms, as the clash between the spirits of two cultural movements or institutions that have coexisted in Europe for five hundred years, not always peacefully. What Kierkegaard called ‘the aesthetic’, I see embodied in Catholicism; and what he called ‘the moral’ (or ‘ethical’), I understand as the spirit of Protestantism. I believe that what I call the Protestant spirit began to grow strong and spread in Europe as a result of the Reformation, but I will suggest rather than prove this historical claim. Most of my efforts will be philosophical, characterizing the two spirits and their manifestations

    Kierkegaard's Phenomenology of Spirit

Kierkegaard's preoccupation with a separation between the ‘inner’ and the ‘outer’ runs through his work and is widely thought to belong to his rejection of Hegel's idealist monism. Focusing on The Concept of Irony and Either/Or, I argue that although Kierkegaard believes in various metaphysical distinctions between inside and outside (the inwardness of faith and the outwardness of ethics and language; the inwardness of emotion and the outwardness of behavior), he nonetheless understands the task of the philosopher as that of making outside and inside converge in a representation. Drawing on Hegel's philosophy of art, I show that Kierkegaard's project in both of these books is the aesthetic project of revealing the inner essence of something in its outward appearance. Kierkegaard's portrait of Socrates in The Concept of Irony is a phenomenology of the spirit of irony. My interpretation adds a new dimension to our understanding of Kierkegaard's aesthetics and his relation to Hegel; it presents him as a follower of Plato, whom he is usually thought to have dismissed; and it uncovers a deep connection between Kierkegaard's first two books, which are never read in conjunctio

A research of prostitution in Sweden shows that it is more common with male prostitution than it is with female prostitution. Despite the fact that it is more common with male prostitution, there are more female prostitutes that meet social workers. Our purpose with this study was to examine why some men choose to prostitute. How does he get in contact with his customer and where do they meet. Our purpose is also to examine why male prostitution is a social problem. We have chosen to interview six people who work with/examine male prostitution and use their perspective in our analyse. The theories we have used are Activity theory and Symbolic Interaction. These theories can help us explain male prostitution. We have used an interview method because it can help us understand male prostitution on deeper level. Our study shows that male prostitution is a social problem because these men often have problem with their psychical and physical health. For example a man can choose to prostitute to finance his drug abuse. Our conclusion is also that money is the main factor why a man begins and continues with prostitution. As long as the prostitution is an advantage and has a function in the mans life he continues to prostitute. When the prostitution becomes disadvantage for the man he ends to prostitute. Our study shows that it is difficult to categorize a male prostitute. He can have any culture, religion, nationality, sexuality, age or class. Our final conclusion is that a male prostitute contacts his customers mainly on the Internet. He can also contact his customers in public areas, for example at the pub. The sexual intercourse between the male prostitute and his customer can take place anywhere, anytime

Abstract: Women with previously diagnosed gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) are at increasedrisk of type-2-diabetes mellitus (T2D).We aimed to establish links between glucose tolerance (GT)and serum fatty acid (FA) profile in the transition from GDM to T2D. Six years after GDM, 221 womenwere grouped as having normal GT (NGT), impaired GT (IGT), or T2D based on oral GT testresults. Fasting serum FAs were profiled, anthropometric measures taken, and dietary intakedetermined. Linoleic acid (LA) was significantly higher in NGT women (p < 0.001) compared withIGT and T2D, and emerged as a strong predictor of low glucose and insulin levels, independentlyof BMI. Self-reported vegetable oil consumption correlated with LA serum levels and glucoselevels. Delta-6-, delta-9-, and stearoyl-CoA-desaturase activities were associated with decreased GT,and delta-5-desaturase activities with increased GT. In a subgroup of women at high risk of diabetes, low LA and high palmitic acid levels were seen in those that developed T2D, with no differences inother FAs or metabolic measurements. Results suggest that proportions of LA and palmitic acid areof particular interest in the transition from GDM to T2D. Interconversions between individual FAsregulated by desaturases appear to be relevant to glucose metabolis

Different Approaches to Evaluation of Information Systems

Outsourcing has been one of the most influential factors contributing to changes in information systems development in the last decade. The paper presents findings from an action research project of information systems development in an outsourcing context at a large university hospital in Denmark. The research, and general findings in the literature, indicates that the intended positive effects of outsourcing are hard to achieve without negative bi-products. Decision frameworks to guide the decision-making in this respect are evaluated based on the empirical findings. It is illustrated that the issues of flexibility and controllability are among the most important when an IT-department determines its outsourcing policies. Continuity issues are also important in understanding the relationship between buyer and seller in IS-acquisition as being more complex than in a simple market model

Alpha-Photon Coincidence Spectroscopy Along Element 115 Decay Chains

Produced in the reaction 48Ca+243Am, thirty correlated α-decay chains were observed in an experiment conducted at the GSI Helmholzzentrum für Schwerionenforschung, Darmstadt, Germany. The decay chains are basically consistent with previous findings and are considered to originate from isotopes of element 115 with mass numbers 287, 288, and 289. A set-up aiming specifically for high-resolution charged particle and photon coincidence spectroscopy was placed behind the gas-filled separator TASCA. For the first time, γ rays as well as X-ray candidates were observed in prompt coincidence with the α-decay chains of element 115

Five meal patterns are differently associated with nutrient intakes, lifestyle factors and energy misreporting in a sub-sample of the Malmö Diet and Cancer cohort

OBJECTIVE: Examine how meal patterns are associated with nutrient intakes, lifestyle and socioeconomic factors, and energy misreporting. DESIGN: A cross-sectional study within the Malmö Diet and Cancer (MDC) cohort. Participants reported on the overall types and frequency of meals consumed, and completed a modified dietary history, a lifestyle and socioeconomic questionnaire, and anthropometric measurements. Based on the reported intake of six different meal types, meal pattern groups were distinguished using Ward's cluster analysis. Associations between meal patterns and nutrient intakes, anthropometric, lifestyle and socioeconomic variables were examined using the chi(2)-method and analysis of variance. SUBJECTS: A sub-sample of the MDC study cohort (n=28,098), consisting of 1,355 men and 1,654 women. RESULTS: Cluster analysis identified five groups of subjects with different meal patterns in both men and women. These meal pattern groups differed regarding nutrient intakes, lifestyle and socioeconomic factors. Subjects reporting frequent coffee meals were more likely to report an 'unhealthy' lifestyle, e.g. smoking, high alcohol consumption and low physical activity, while those with a fruit pattern reported a more 'healthy' lifestyle. Women were more likely to underreport their energy intake than men, and the degree of underreporting varied between the meal pattern groups. CONCLUSIONS: The meal pattern groups showed significant differences in dietary quality and socioeconomic and lifestyle variables. This supports previous research suggesting that diet is part of a multifaceted phenomenon. Incorporation of aspects on how foods are combined and eaten into public health advices might improve their efficiency
