Educação e literacia sexual: representações de professores (estudo de caso)

    Get PDF

Psychometric properties and further validation of the emergency reaction questionnaire in a sample of Portuguese adults

    Get PDF
Emergencies and disasters are abrupt, unexpected, dangerous events often traumatic. Individuals differ in the way they respond to this kind of adverse experience, depending on varied factors. This study used the Emergency Reaction Questionnaire (ERQ) to assess defensive mechanisms, feelings, and thoughts during emergency and disaster-related situations. The main objective of the present study was to confirm the factor structure and provide further support to the validity of the ERQ on a Portuguese sample. Here we replicated previous findings in showing that people who are more prone to react in an organized way in emergencies tend to have lower anxiety levels and a greater tendency for sensation seeking. We also found that females score lower than males; that ERQ specific readiness scores slightly increase with age and people who have risky jobs or routinely engage in extreme sports scored higher on the ERQ scales (meaning they act more readily and organized in an emergency). The ERQ and its Portuguese version show to be a psychometrically sound and valid measurement of emergency behavior, able to assess individual differences in the way people perform during various emergencies, and can be used in future research and in practice for screening or measuring training efficiency.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Do goal orientations really influence performance?

Purpose: The creativity of retail employees seems to be of the utmost importance for ensuring the performance of organizations in service settings. This paper contributes to the existing theory by investigating the direct and indirect effects of goal orientations on the creativity and performance of retail employees. The authors propose a framework depicting the relationships between goal orientations and employee creativity and performance, including the intervening effects of self-efficacy and customer orientation. Design/methodology/approach: The study was conducted with retail frontline employees of a large retail bank in Portugal. The sample consists of 267 valid responses. Structural equations are used by applying the maximum likelihood method to test the conceptual framework. Findings: Results are broadly supportive of the hypotheses. Learning orientation is, directly and indirectly, related to creativity, but only indirectly to performance. As to performance orientation, it is indirectly related to creativity through self-efficacy and customer orientation, and directly as well as indirectly, to performance. The authors investigate the extent to which the effects of goal orientations on creativity and performance are mediated by self-regulatory mechanisms, namely self-efficacy, and customer orientation. Originality/value: The results recognize that learning and performance goals are neither mutually exclusive nor contradictory, which collide with past empirical evidence showing that learning goals are generally associated with more favorable outcomes and performance goals with more negative or equivocal ones. These outcomes underscore the need and relevance for managers to foster both goal orientations to promote the creativity and performance of retail employees, representing a particularly salient issue in retail businesses characterized by significant interpersonal interactions.info:eu-repo/semantics/acceptedVersio

Contrasting the effectiveness and efficiency of virtual reality and real environments in the treatment of acrophobia

    Get PDF
Previous studies reported good results in using virtual reality for the treatment of acrophobia. Similarly this paper reports the use of a virtual environment for the treatment of acrophobia. In the study, 10 subjects were exposed to three sessions of simulated heights in a virtual reality (VR) system, and 5 others were exposed to a real environment. Both groups revealed significant progress in a range of anxiety, avoidance and behaviour measurements when confronted with virtual as well as real height circumstances. Despite VR participants experiencing considerably shorter treatment times than the real-world subjects, significant improvements were recorded on the Behavioural Avoidance Test, the Attitudes Toward Heights Questionnaire and the Acrophobia Questionnaire. These results are suggestive of a possible higher effectiveness and efficiency of VR in treating acrophobia

Integrating environmental impacts in an intercity corridor level pricing scheme

    Get PDF
A significant part of the transport sector externalities occurs in intercity corridors, which account for 65% of the total of the kilometers travelled in for example, Portugal (for 2017). A thorough analysis of intercity corridors characteristics has been receiving less attention compared to urban roads. The objective of this work is to propose a methodology to tackle intercity corridors issues with respect to environmental impacts. It will focus on suggesting smart and dynamic toll systems, integration of impacts in pricing schemes, and optimization of public transport fares, coupled with a scheme based on the “polluter pays” principle. This vision paper presents the main objectives and methodology of an ongoing research in which the final objective is to lead to a more efficient usage of the infrastructures. The optimization is mainly focused on an environmental perspective, which can be important for decision-makers to improve specific intercity corridor measures/policies.publishe

Biodetection of turfgrass fungal diseases using sniffer dogs

    Get PDF
The results in this work evaluated the sensitivity and specificity of the olfactory capacity of the intervening dog in the fungus biodetection. On 100 attempts, a sensitivity and a specificity of 100% (Table 1) were obtained for the biodetection of the fungus Sclerotium rolfsii when the 4-year-old English Springer Spaniel female dog was faced to a straight line of 5 equally distanced Falcons. The post-inoculation time of the samples, used in the sessions, varied between 24 and 72H, however there was no difference in the detection response by the female dog Julieta. This is also a noteworthy additional fact, given the potential for prevention that can represent the detection of a fungus with such a short post-inoculation time. Further work is being established to assess the olfactory ability to detect the presence of the fungus in inoculated turfgrass samples and finally to detect it in the field.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
