    The Building Information Model and the IFC standard: analysis of the characteristics necessary for the acoustic and energy simulation of buildings

    The new European Directive 2014/24 / EU requires for all member States the use of BIM procedures in the construction of public buildings. The countries belonging to the European Union shall be obliged to transpose the Directive and adapt their procedures to that effect. The paper analyzes the IFC format, the only recognized by the European Directive Standards for BIM procedures, in order to assess its use for simulations of buildings. IFC, described by the ISO 16739 (2013), is today a standard that describes the topology of the constructive elements of the building and what belongs to it overall. The format includes geometrical information on the room and on all building components, including details of the type for performance (transmittance, fire resistance, sound insulation), in other words it is an independent object file for the software producers to which, according to the European Directive, it will be compulsory to refer in the near future, during the different stages of the life of a building from the design phase, to management and possible demolition at the end of life. The IFC initiative began in 1994, when an industry consortium invested in the development of a set of C ++ classes that can support the development of integrated applications. Twelve US companies joined the consortium: these companies that were included initially are called the consortium "Industry Alliance for Interoperability". In September 1995 the Alliance opened up membership to all interested parties, and in 1997 changed its name to "International Alliance for Interoperability". The new alliance was reconstituted as a non-profit organization, with the aim of developing and promoting the '' Industry Foundation Class "(IFC) as a neutral data model for the building product that were useful to gather information throughout the life cycle of a building facility. Since 2005 the Alliance has been carrying out its activities through its national chapters called SMART building. The present study aims at evaluating the IFC, comparing the information and data contained in it, with other formats already used for energy simulations of buildings such as the gbXML (Green Building XML), highlighting the missing required information and proposing the inclusion of new ones to issue the energy and acoustic simulation. More generally the attention is focused to building physics simulation software devoted to exploit the BIM model potential enabling interoperability

    Branched Spines of 3-Manifolds and Reidemeister Torsion of Euler Structures

    We consider homotopy classes of non-singular vector fields on three-manifolds with boundary and we define for these classes torsion invariants of Reidemeister type. We show that torsion is well-defined and equivariant under the action of the appropriate homology group using an elementary and self-contained technique. Namely, we use the theory of branched standard spines to express the difference between two homotopy classes as a combination of well-understood elementary catastrophes. As a special case we are able to reproduce Turaev’s theory of Reidemeister torsion for Euler structures on closed manifolds of dimension three

    Stability analysis of open-channel flows with secondary currents

    This paper presents some results coming from a linear stability analysis of turbulent depth-averaged open-channel flows (OCFs) with secondary currents. The aim was to identify plausible mechanisms underpinning the formation of large-scale turbulence structures, which are commonly referred to as large-scale motions (LSMs) and very-large-scale motions (VLSMs). Results indicate that the investigated flows are subjected to a sinuous instability whose longitudinal wavelength compares very well with that pertaining to LSMs. In contrast, no unstable modes at wavelengths comparable to those associated with VLSMs could be found. This suggests that VLSMs in OCFs are triggered by nonlinear mechanisms to which the present analysis is obviously blind. We demonstrate that the existence of the sinuous instability requires two necessary conditions: (i) the circulation of the secondary currents ω must be greater than a critical value ωc; (ii) the presence of a dynamically responding free surface (i.e. when the free surface is modelled as a frictionless flat surface, no instabilities are detected). The present paper draws some ideas from the work by Cossu, Hwang and co-workers on other wall flows (i.e. turbulent boundary layers, pipe, channel and Couette flows) and somewhat supports their idea that LSMs and VLSMs might be governed by an outer-layer cycle also in OCFs.     Building Information Modeling and Building Performance Simulation-Based Decision Support Systems for Improved Built Heritage Operation

    Adapting outdated building stocks’ operations to meet current environmental and economic demands poses significant challenges that, to be faced, require a shift toward digitalization in the architecture, engineering, construction, and operation sectors. Digital tools capable of acquiring, structuring, sharing, processing, and visualizing built assets’ data in the form of knowledge need to be conceptualized and developed to inform asset managers in decision-making and strategic planning. This paper explores how building information modeling and building performance simulation technologies can be integrated into digital decision support systems (DSS) to make building data accessible and usable by non-digital expert operators through user-friendly services. The method followed to develop the digital DSS is illustrated and then demonstrated with a simulation-based application conducted on the heritage case study of the Faculty of Engineering in Bologna, Italy. The analysis allows insights into the building’s energy performance at the space and hour scale and explores its relationship with the planned occupancy through a data visualization approach. In addition, the conceptualization of the DSS within a digital twin vision lays the foundations for future extensions to other technologies and data, including, for example, live sensor measurements, occupant feedback, and forecasting algorithms

    Spacetime metrics describing `non-singular' black holes are commonly studied in the literature as effective modification to the Schwarzschild solution that mimic quantum gravity effects removing the central singularity. Here we point out that to be physically plausible, such metrics should also incorporate the 1-loop quantum corrections to the Newton potential and a non-trivial time delay between an observer at infinity and an observer in the regular center. We present a modification of the well-known Hayward metric that features these two properties. We discuss bounds on the maximal time delay imposed by conditions on the curvature, and the consequences for the weak energy condition, in general violated by the large transversal pressures introduced by the time delay.Comment: 10 pages, many figures; v2 added reference

    The Process of Digitalization of the Urban Environment for the Development of Sustainable and Circular Cities: A Case Study of Bologna, Italy

    The residential heritage that was built during the great expansion of real estate after the Second World War has severe deficiencies in structural safety, fire resistance, energy efficiency, and accessibility and these cannot be solved with sustainable renovation measures. This study focuses on replacement interventions and promotes a management model that addresses three areas (technical, social, and economic) and it refers to the application of the circularity principle to the construction sector for the goal of climate neutrality by 2050. The final objective is to define a protocol—namely, the guidelines—to reference in a decision-making process that promotes urban regeneration by comparing demolition with reconstruction and renovation. The proposed methodology allows for the determination of suitable areas in Bologna for replacement and the joining of the municipal geodatabase with data from archival research on building permits in 1949–1965 by using GIS software. This digital archive can be implemented in a digital twin for an urban block, which can become a predictive tool for urban planning and the management of the whole life of a building. The main result is the characterization of urban blocks by identifying typical features belonging to specific building libraries that are validated with density analyses. These urban clusters and building archetypes can be used to assess targeted intervention measures by using specific tools, such as predictive maps and 3D city models

    Risk Factors for Epithelial Ovarian Tumours of Borderline Malignancy

    A case-control study was conducted on 91 cases with histologically-confirmed borderline ovarian turnours and 237 control subjects in hospital for acute non-gynaecological, hormonal or neoplastic disease. Women reporting three or more births, compared to nulliparae, had a relative risk (RR) estimate of 0.6, but this finding was not statistically significant (95% confidence interval (CI): 0.2-1.4). The risk of borderline turnours increased, although not significantly, with later age at first birth: compared to women reporting first birth at age 24 or before, the RRs were 1.3 and 1.7 in those reporting respectively their first birth at age 25-29 and 30 years or more. No significant relationship emerged between borderline ovarian cancer and age at menarche, menopausal status and lifelong menstrual pattern. Cases tended to report a later age at menopause than controls, but the trend in risk was not statistically significant. Nine cases (9.9%) and 68 controls (24.9%) reported oral contraceptive use: compared with never users the multivariate RR for ever users was 0.3, and the risk dropped with duration of use to 0.2 in users for two years or more (X21, trend = 12.70, p<0.001).
