Physical Study by Surface Characterizations of Sarin Sensor on the Basis of Chemically Functionalized Silicon Nanoribbon Field Effect Transistor
Surface characterizations of an organophosphorus (OP) gas detector based on
chemically functionalized silicon nanoribbon field-effect transistor (SiNR-FET)
were performed by Kelvin Probe Force Microscopy (KPFM) and ToF-SIMS, and
correlated with changes in the current-voltage characteristics of the devices.
KPFM measurements on FETs allow (i) to investigate the contact potential
difference (CPD) distribution of the polarized device as function of the gate
voltage and the exposure to OP traces and, (ii) to analyze the CPD hysteresis
associated to the presence of mobile ions on the surface. The CPD measured by
KPFM on the silicon nanoribbon was corrected due to side capacitance effects in
order to determine the real quantitative surface potential. Comparison with
macroscopic Kelvin probe (KP) experiments on larger surfaces was carried out.
These two approaches were quantitatively consistent. An important increase of
the CPD values (between + 399 mV and + 302 mV) was observed after the OP sensor
grafting, corresponding to a decrease of the work function, and a weaker
variation after exposure to OP (between - 14 mV and - 61 mV) was measured.
Molecular imaging by ToF-SIMS revealed OP presence after SiNR-FET exposure. The
OP molecules were essentially localized on the Si-NR confirming effectiveness
and selectivity of the OP sensor. A prototype was exposed to Sarin vapors and
succeeded in the detection of low vapor concentrations (40 ppm).Comment: Paper and supporting information, J. Phys. Chem. C, 201
Ion Beam Analysis of He-implanted fusion solid breedes
Introduction
Lithium-based ceramics (silicates, titanates, ?) possess a series of advantages as alternative over liquid lithium and lithium-lead alloys for fusion breeders. They have a sufficient lithium atomic density (up to 540 kg*m-3), high temperature stability (up to 1300 K), and good chemical compatibility with structural materials. Nevertheless, few research is made on the diffusion behavior of He and H isotopes through polycrystalline structures of porous ceramics which is crucial in order to understand the mobility of gas coolants as well as, the release of tritium. Moreover, in the operating conditions of actual breeder blanket concepts, the extraction rate of the helium produced during lithium transmutation can be affected by the composition and the structure of the near surface region modifying the performance of BB material
A Neutral and Stable Macrocyclic Mn(II) Complex for MRI Tumor Visualization
A stable and inert amphiphilic Mn(II) complex based on a bisamide derivative of 1,4-DO2A (DO2A=tetraazacyclododecane-1,4-diacetic acid) was synthesized and its H-1 NMR relaxometric behavior was investigated as a function of the magnetic field strength, pH and temperature. The interaction with human serum albumin (HSA) was also studied via relaxometry showing a good relaxivity enhancement at low field (at 1T and 298 K the relaxivity increases from 4.5 mM(-1) s(-1) of the Mn(II)-complex to 14.0 mM(-1) s(-1) of the complex-HSA supramolecular adduct). In vivo biodistribution and MRI studies highlighted a rapid and mixed renal/liver elimination without spleen accumulation from healthy mice and good contrast enhancing properties in a breast tumor murine model. A comparison with a clinically approved Gd(III) agent (GdBOPTA, Multihance (R)) underlined that the proposed Mn(II) contrast agent gave comparable tumor contrast enhancement up to 3 hours post-injection

Estimating sea surface temperature measurement methods using characteristic differences in the diurnal cycle
Lack of reliable observational metadata represents a key barrier to understanding sea surface temperature (SST) measurement biases, a large contributor to uncertainty in the global surface record. We present a method to identify SST measurement practice by comparing the observed SST diurnal cycle from individual ships with a reference from drifting buoys under similar conditions of wind and solar radiation. Compared to existing estimates, we found a larger number of engine room-intake (ERI) reports post War World II and in the period 1960 – 1980. Differences in the inferred mixture of observations lead to a systematic warmer shift of the bias adjusted SST anomalies from 1980 compared to previous estimates, while reducing the ensemble spread. Changes in mean field differences between bucket and ERI SST anomalies in the Northern Hemisphere over the period 1955 – 1995 could be as large as 0.5 °C and are not well reproduced by current bias adjustment models
A Study on the Efficiency of Sustainable Wine Grape Vineyard Management Strategies
Crop protection strategies based on cupric products and mainly adopted in organic viticulture produce a consistent environmental impact due to the persistence of copper in soils and its negative effects on edaphic biodiversity. In this work, trials were carried out during the crop years 2018–2020 in a vineyard with an organic management by a low-copper strategy and in a conventional IPM management with an IPM strategy with reduced use of fungicides. Phytosanitary treatments have been strictly planned according to forecasting models, and fungicides have been partially substituted with substances improving the resistance mechanisms of plants. Different strategies of green manure management, in order to improve the health of vines, were also adopted. Results suggest the efficacy of the “GreenGrapes” plant protection strategy in conditions of low downy mildew pressure. Furthermore, no declines in the production quality have been recorded; conversely, the synergic effect of the green manure and the tested biostimulant substances (“GreenGrapes” protocols) and the green manure management improved yield and grape quality, compared with conventional conduction (IPM and Organic) with a grass covering
