Acoustic Neuroma (vestibular Schwannoma): Surgical Results On 240 Patients Operated On Dorsal Decubitus Position.
To evaluate the result of the surgical treatment of vestibular schwannoma (VS) operated in dorsal decubitus (mastoid position). 240 patients with a VS underwent a retrosigmoid craniotomy for tumor resection in dorsal decubitus (mastoid position). The function of 7th and 8th cranial nerves was monitored during surgery and the opened internal auditory canal (IAC) was reconstructed using a vascularized dura flap, muscle and fibrin glue. Complete tumor removal was achieved in 99% of the cases, with a mortality of 1.6%. The facial nerve function was preserved in 85% of cases and hearing in 40% of the patients (with preoperative hearing) with tumors of up 1.5 cm in diameter. The incidence of cerebrospinal fluid leak was 5.8% and meningitis 2.9%. Venous air embolism was registered in 3% of cases; it was not associated to mortality. Surgical removal of VS in dorsal position has several advantages; the morbidity and mortality are very low.65605-

Study of Bio-Based Foams Prepared from PBAT/PLA Reinforced with Bio-Calcium Carbonate and Compatibilized with Gamma Radiation
Foamed polymers are future materials, considered “green materials” due to their properties with very low consumption of raw materials; they can be used to ameliorate appearance of structures besides contributing for thermal and acoustic insulation. Nevertheless, waste disposal has generated about 20–30% of total of solid volume in landfills besides prejudicing flora and fauna by uncontrolled disposal. The development of biodegradable polymers aims to solve this problem, considering that in 2012, bio-plastics market was evaluated in 1.4 million tons produced and in 2017 attained 6.2 million tons. Biodegradable polymers as poly(lactic acid) (PLA) and poly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT) are thermoplastics which can be processed using the most conventional polymer processing methods. PLA is high in strength and modulus but brittle, while PBAT is flexible and tough. In order to reduce interfacial tension exhibited by PLA/PBAT blends, it was used as compatibilizing agent 5 phr of PLA previously gamma-radiated at 150 kGy. Ionizing radiation induces compatibilization by free radicals, improving the dispersion and adhesion of blend phases, without using chemical additives and at room temperature. As a reinforcement agent, calcium carbonate from avian eggshell waste was used, at 10 ph of micro particles, 125 μm. Admixtures were further processed in a single-screw extruder, using CO2 as physical blowing agent (PBA). Property investigations were performed by DSC, TGA, XRD, SEM, FTIR, and mechanical essays

Assessment of Cardiorespiratory and Metabolic Contributions in an Extreme Intensity CrossFit® Benchmark Workout
Our purpose was to characterize the oxygen uptake kinetics (VO 2), energy systems contributions and total energy expenditure during a CrossFit ® benchmark workout performed in the extreme intensity domain. Fourteen highly trained male CrossFitters, aged 28.3 ± 5.4 years, with height 177.8 ± 9.4 cm, body mass 87.9 ± 10.5 kg and 5.6 ± 1.8 years of training experience, performed the Isabel workout at maximal exertion. Cardiorespiratory variables were measured at baseline, during exercise and the recovery period, with blood lactate and glucose concentrations, including the ratings of perceived exertion, measured pre- and post-workout. The Isabel workout was 117 ± 10 s in duration and the VO 2 peak was 47.2 ± 4.7 mL·kg -1·min -1, the primary component amplitude was 42.0 ± 6.0 mL·kg -1·min -1, the time delay was 4.3 ± 2.2 s and the time constant was 14.2 ± 6.0 s. The accumulated VO 2 (0.6 ± 0.1 vs. 4.8 ± 1.0 L·min -1) value post-workout increased substantially when compared to baseline. Oxidative phosphorylation (40%), glycolytic (45%) and phosphagen (15%) pathways contributed to the 245 ± 25 kJ total energy expenditure. Despite the short ~2 min duration of the Isabel workout, the oxygen-dependent and oxygen-independent metabolism energy contributions to the total metabolic energy release were similar. The CrossFit ® Isabel requires maximal effort and the pattern of physiological demands identifies this as a highly intensive and effective workout for developing fitness and conditioning for sports. </p
Quasinormal modes for massless topological black holes
An exact expression for the quasinormal modes of scalar perturbations on a
massless topological black hole in four and higher dimensions is presented. The
massive scalar field is nonminimally coupled to the curvature, and the horizon
geometry is assumed to have a negative constant curvature.Comment: CECS style, 11 pages, no figures. References adde
Ultraspinning instability of anti-de Sitter black holes
Myers-Perry black holes with a single spin in d>5 have been shown to be
unstable if rotating sufficiently rapidly. We extend the numerical analysis
which allowed for that result to the asymptotically AdS case. We determine
numerically the stationary perturbations that mark the onset of the
instabilities for the modes that preserve the rotational symmetries of the
background. The parameter space of solutions is thoroughly analysed, and the
onset of the instabilities is obtained as a function of the cosmological
constant. Each of these perturbations has been conjectured to represent a
bifurcation point to a new phase of stationary AdS black holes, and this is
consistent with our results.Comment: 22 pages, 7 figures. v2: Reference added. Matches published versio
