"The word “globalisation” has a wide-ranging meaning! It includes (a) the phenomenon of the opening of the national economies upon a liberal global market resulting from progress in Communications and transport; or (b) the liberalisation of exchanges resulting from the interdependence between countries; or (c) the fact of becoming global and therefore spreading throughout the world; or (d) affecting the whole world or all peoples; or again (e) to put something into effect worldwide."(...
A year of social discontent in the UK
Unlike other countries where employees have a legal right to strike, in the United Kingdom employees do not enjoy such a right. All they have, is a freedom to strike or take any other forms of industrial action so long as they observe strictly the complicated laws on industrial conflict. Failure to obey these laws makes unions liable for the tort of inducing breaches of commercial and/or employment contracts or conspiracy to do an unlawful act. Furthermore, employees would be liable for brea..
Employers' Liability - from Physical to Psychiatric Illnesses
From Introduction: "This text proposes to treat an important development which has taken
place in the United Kingdom in recent years in the field of the employer’s
common law duty of care. It is proposed to analyse briefly the well
established concept of the employer’s common law duty of care towards
his employees which, until recently, applied generally only to physical
injuries and illnesses. The development of this concept in recent years
into the psychiatric field is a welcome step forward and shows how
labour law has progressed and is progressing in the 21st century."(...

'Just open your eyes a bit more': The methodological challenges of researching black and minority ethnic students' experiences of physical education teacher education
In this paper we discuss some of the challenges of centralising 'race' and ethnicity in Physical Education (PE) research, through reflecting on the design and implementation of a study exploring Black and minority ethnic students' experiences of their teacher education. Our aim in the paper is to contribute to ongoing theoretical and methodological debates about intersectionality, and specifically about difference and power in the research process. As McCorkel and Myers notes, the 'researchers' backstage'-the assumptions, motivations, narratives and relations-that underpin any research are not always made visible and yet are highly significant in judging the quality and substance of the resulting project. As feminists, we argue that the invisibility of 'race' and ethnicity within Physical Education Teacher Education (PETE), and PE research more widely, is untenable; however, we also show how centralising 'race' and ethnicity raised significant methodological and epistemological questions, particularly given our position as White researchers and lecturers. In this paper, we reflect on a number of aspects of our research 'journey': the theoretical and methodological challenges of operationalising concepts of 'race' and ethnicity, the practical issues and dilemmas involved in recruiting participants for the study, the difficulties of 'talking race' personally and professionally and challenges of representing the experiences of 'others'. © 2012 Copyright Taylor and Francis Group, LLC
Empirical research into white racialized identities in Britain
The intellectual project of using whiteness as an explicit tool of analysis is not one that has taken root in Britain. However, there are a number of empirical studies that investigate the racialization of white identities. In this article, I look at some empirical sociological fieldwork carried out on white identities in Britain since the early 1990s and identify the key themes arising. These themes are (in)visibility, norms and values, cultural capital and integration, contingent hierarchies and Empire in the present. In Britain, a pertinent distinction is between rural and urban settings for the enactment of white identities vis-à-vis those of minorities, and there is an exploration of some of the contingency that draws the boundary between ‘white’ and ‘Other’ in different places. Areas of commonality and distinctiveness are noted in terms of the American work. In the last section, I argue that there are a number of issues to resolve around continuing such studies, including linking the micro-level to the macro-level analysis, and expanding to international comparative work
