    Multidisciplinary teaching of Biotechnology and Omics sciences

    In the last years, there was a great boom in the Omics fields that have developed as multidisciplinary sciences. They use laboratory techniques related to Biology and Chemistry but also Bioinformatics tools. However, the developmental progress of these disciplines has led that much of undergraduate studies related to Biology have curricula that become outdated. From this point of view, it is necessary to focus the students to the fundamentals and techniques of complementary disciplines that will be essentials for the understanding of the Omics sciences. In the present work, we have developed a new teaching approach for Biochemistry, Biology and Bioinformatics students. They formed interdisciplinary working groups. These groups have prepared and presented communications about different techniques or methods in Molecular Biology, Omics or Bioinformatics participating in a technical meeting. This learning strategy “I do and I learn” has enabled to the students a first contact with the scientific communication including the approach to the scientific literature to acquire technical knowledge. The cooperation between students from different disciplines has enriched their point of view and even has been used in some practical master’s works.Universidad de Málaga.     Quantitative and qualitative analysis of psychosocial factors affecting women’s entrepreneurship

    This work aims to clarify the psychosocial variables that lead women to undertake and those that prevent them from doing so. Two studies were conducted using a mixed methodology to compensate for the inherent weaknesses of using each approach. The first study was based on the collection of quantitative data using the GloPEW questionnaire with a sample of 296 people. The second study, of a qualitative nature, was carried out through focus groups with a sample of 26 people. The results show that self-efficacy and emotional intelligence are the main factors to develop to promote entrepreneurship among women. Although the data show statistical strength, it seems necessary to expand the sample and incorporate more profiles of female entrepreneurs, for example, with different levels of training, given the complexity and variety of intervening factors.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

    Automatic Tomato and Peduncle Location System Based on Computer Vision for Use in Robotized Harvesting

    Protected agriculture is a field in which the use of automatic systems is a key factor. In fact, the automatic harvesting of delicate fruit has not yet been perfected. This issue has received a great deal of attention over the last forty years, although no commercial harvesting robots are available at present, mainly due to the complexity and variability of the working environments. In this work we developed a computer vision system (CVS) to automate the detection and localization of fruit in a tomato crop in a typical Mediterranean greenhouse. The tasks to be performed by the system are: (1) the detection of the ripe tomatoes, (2) the location of the ripe tomatoes in the XY coordinates of the image, and (3) the location of the ripe tomatoes’ peduncles in the XY coordinates of the image. Tasks 1 and 2 were performed using a large set of digital image processing tools (enhancement, edge detection, segmentation, and the feature’s description of the tomatoes). Task 3 was carried out using basic trigonometry and numerical and geometrical descriptors. The results are very promising for beef and cluster tomatoes, with the system being able to classify 80.8% and 87.5%, respectively, of fruit with visible peduncles as “collectible”. The average processing time per image for visible ripe and harvested tomatoes was less than 30 ms

    Listeriosis en bovinos de la Provincia de Buenos Aires, Argentina

    Se reali­zó un estudio retrospectivo de casos de listeriosis bovina ocurridos en diferentes partidos de Provincia de Buenos Aires (Argentina). Se utilizaron las técnicas diagnósticas de histopato­logía, bacteriología e inmunohistoquímica. De 17 casos confirmados por esta última técnica, en 7 de ellos se dispuso de material para el cultivo bacteriológico y solo en 3 casos se pudo aislar Listeria monocytogenes. El 64,7% de los casos de listeriosis se presentaron en rodeos que consumían ensilado de maíz. La enfermedad se diagnosticó con mayor frecuencia en sistemas de producción intensivos (feedlot y tambos). Cuatro casos negativos al cultivo de L. monocytogenes se lograron confirmar por inmunohistoquímica, por lo cual esta técnica se revela valiosa dado que su empleo mejora la eficiencia diagnóstica de los casos de listeriosis bovina

    Isothermal microcalorimetry minimal inhibitory concentration testing in extensively drug resistant Gram-negative bacilli: a multicentre study

    Objectives: To evaluate the performance of an isothermal microcalorimetry (IMC) method for determining the MICs among extensively drug-resistant Gram-negative bacilli. Methods: A collection of 320 clinical isolates (n = 80 of each) of Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Acinetobacter baumannii from Sweden, Spain, Italy and the Netherlands were tested. The MICs were determined using the IMC device calScreener (Symcel, Stockholm, Sweden) and ISO-broth microdilution as the reference method. Essential agreement, categorical agreement, very major errors (VME), major errors (ME) and minor (mE) errors for each antibiotic were determined. Results: Data from 316 isolates were evaluated. Four errors (two ME, one VME, one mE) among 80 K. pneumoniae, six errors (four ME, one VME, one mE) among 79 E. coli, 15 errors (seven VME, three ME, five mE) among 77 P. aeruginosa and 18 errors (12 VME, two ME, four mE) among 80 A. baumannii were observed. Average essential agreement and categorical agreement of the IMC method were 96.6% (95% confidence interval, 94.2–99) and 97.1% (95% confidence interval, 95.4–98.5) respectively when the MICs were determined at the end of 18 hours. Categorical agreement of the IMC method for prediction of MIC by the end of 8 hours for colistin, meropenem, amikacin, ciprofloxacin and piperacillin/tazobactam were 95%, 91.4%, 94%, 95.2% and 93.7% respectively. Conclusions: The IMC method could accurately determine the MICs among extensively drug-resistant clinical isolates of E. coli, K. pneumoniae, P. aeruginosa and A. baumannii isolates
