Parents' communicative practices with ADHD and non-ADHD children

2011 Spring.Includes bibliographical references.Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) has become more commonly diagnosed in the U. S. over the last decade. Several theories exist for what causes ADHD and how to properly treat the disorder, with an increased emphasis on parenting and its effect on children`s behaviors. To date, little research has examined the differences between parents` communicative practices with children diagnosed with ADHD versus non-ADHD children. The purpose of the present study was to determine if differences exist between the parenting practices of ADHD-diagnosed children and non-ADHD children. Specifically, this study examined verbal and nonverbal differences in parents` communication practices. Ninety-five parents participated in an online survey, offering insight into the ways in which they parent during various situations. The Parenting Practices Interview (PPI) was used to determine the parenting practices parents used with their children. Additionally, the survey included demographic questions and questions requesting specific information regarding each child within the family. An independent samples t-test was conducted, as well as a series of Pearson correlations between the various categories of parenting practices. Significant differences were found within the areas of parental monitoring, appropriate discipline, harsh and inconsistent discipline, and clear expectations. Parents of children diagnosed with ADHD tend to use more appropriate discipline, yet they also practice more harsh and inconsistent discipline. They also employ clearer expectations in their parenting practices. Parents of non-ADHD children tend to monitor their children significantly more than parents of children diagnosed with ADHD. No significant differences were found when examining physical punishment, positive verbal discipline, or praise and incentives. These results offer important areas of parenting to consider when looking at how parenting practices influence children`s behaviors. Results are consistent with other research stating that differences exist between the parenting practices of parents with ADHD-diagnosed children and parents with non-ADHD children

Autonomous Robot Controller Using Bitwise GIBBS Sampling

International audienceIn the present paper we describe a bio-inspired non von Neumann controller for a simple sensorimotor robotic system. This controller uses a bitwise version of the Gibbs sampling algorithm to select commands so the robot can adapt its course of action and avoid perceived obstacles in the environment. The VHDL specification of the circuit implementation of this controller is based on stochastic computation to perform Bayesian inference at a low energy cost. We show that the proposed unconventional architecture allows to successfully carry out the obstacle avoidance task and to address scalability issues observed in previous works

Study of the diversity of sports modalities in specialized media: Marca, As and Sport

El fútbol ocupa un gran porcentaje de páginas en los medios deportivos impresos. Esto nos lleva a la pregunta de si existe una falta de rigor periodístico en estos medios, que parecen regirse únicamente por la popularidad del fútbol. El problema principal de dedicar tantas páginas al fútbol es el silenciamiento o el mínimo espacio dedicado a otras modalidades deportivas. Esto podría generar una pérdida de interés hacia otros deportes minoritarios debido a la poca visibilidad que estos reciben. “¿Todo es fútbol? No, no todo es fútbol, pero si lo es casi en un 50% en los periódicos y periodo de tiempo analizado” (Jurado, 2008, p. 182). La finalidad principal de la investigación es dar a conocer cuáles son las modalidades deportivas más tratadas y cuáles tienen menos espacio entre las publicaciones de los tres medios, así como su temática. También se analizará la visibilidad que se le da al deporte femenino y los géneros periodísticos empleados en las publicaciones. Con esta investigación se pretende analizar durante el mes de marzo de 2023 la diversidad de modalidades deportivas en los medios deportivos impresos con más tirada en Alicante (Marca, As y Sport). Para ello, se clasificarán en una tabla las páginas y los textos totales dedicados a cada modalidad deportiva. Esta investigación reflejará el porcentaje de textos dedicados al fútbol en comparación con otras modalidades deportivas para responder a esta hipótesis

Scavenging activity of Magnéli phases as a function of Ti(4+)/Ti(3+) ratios

TiO2 is able to scavenge reactive oxygen and nitrogen species (ROS and RNS) in the absence of light. The scavenging mechanism has been related to the chemistry of defects (oxygen vacancy reduced oxidation states of Ti) but it is still unknown. This study describes the ROS scavenging activity of different titanium oxide phases and relates their scavenging activities with the Ti4+/Ti3+ molar ratio as well as the band gap value. The Ti5O9 phase, with a mixture of both oxidation states, presented a substantially higher percentage of 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydracyl radicals (DPPH) eliminated per m2 of specific surface area in comparison to phases with predominant oxidation states Ti4+ or Ti3+ such as TiO2 and Ti2O3, respectively. The obtained results indicate that the DPPH scavenging mechanism corresponds to a catalytic process on the Ti5O9 surface which is facilitated by the presence of charges that can easily move through the material. The mobility of charges and electrons in the semiconductor surface, related to the presence of oxidation states Ti4+ and Ti3+ and a small band gap, could create an attractive surface for radical species such as DPPH. This puts forward Ti5O9 as a promising candidate coating for implantable biomedical devices, as an electrode, since it can cushion inflammatory processes which could lead to device encapsulation and, consequently, failure.The authors would like to thank the Fundación General CSIC and Obra Social “La Caixa” (Project BIOAMD) for providing financial support to this work. La expresión del miedo a través de la expresión artística

La finalidad de este trabajo es dar a conocer la importancia que juega la actividad plástica para la expresión de los miedos. Gracias a ella, los niños consiguen manifestar esta emoción de una manera sencilla y lúdica para ellos. Esto se puede ver reflejado en el apartado de intervención didáctica, ya que la propuesta ha sido llevada a cabo. A lo largo del documento se recopila una revisión bibliográfica de autores que han trabajado esta emoción, además de unas referencias sobre qué son las emociones, qué es el miedo y cómo trabajarlo a través de la expresión plástica. Esta información bibliográfica se ve reflejada en el apartado del marco teórico, siendo esta, de gran utilidad para poder llevar acabo la intervención didáctica en el aula de una manera correcta y apoyada con un respaldo teórico.Grado en Educación Infanti
