Aim: To validate the Attitudes Toward Statistics Scale (EAE) and to investigate the perceptions and attitudes toward statistics among dentistry postgraduates students. Method: A total of 115 postgraduates students (62 master's students, 80 women, age 26 ± 4 years) answered the items of the EAE and the Clinician Attitudes Toward Biostatistics (CATB). Information on academic training was collected. Confirmatory factor analysis (χ²/df, CFI, TLI and RMSEA) was conducted to estimate the validity of the instruments to sample. The standardized mean scores of CATB and EAE factors were estimated and compared (ANOVA). Results: The EAE two-factor fit model exhibited adequate validity for the sample (χ²/df = 1.814, CFI = 0.979, TLI = 0.976, and RMSEA = 0.086). Individuals who received their first training earlier, reported better performance in mathematics and greater knowledge of statistics, also exhibition more positive attitudes toward statistics. Individuals who reported having a research career focus, and who evaluated their supervisors’ knowledge of statistics as very poor to intermediate, presented a greater awareness of the importance of statistics in research and scientific evidence. Conclusion: The EAE was valid and reliable for the sample. Perceptions and attitudes toward biostatistics were associated with variables involving the participant's academic formation.

    Get PDF
AbstractCementoblastoma is a benign odontogenic tumor, classified as a rare lesion, of slow growth, with expansion of the cortical bone; it is associated with the root of a tooth with pulp vitality, appearing more commonly in the posterior region of the mandible. In this paper, a rare case report of a surgically treated benign cementoblastoma affecting the maxilla of an 11-year- old patient is presented. Furthermore, the diagnostic methods, the clinical, imaging and histopathological features, and the treatment options are discussed. Finally, correlations are made with findings in the scientific literature

Further development of small hydropower facilities will significantly reduce sediment transport to the Pantanal wetland of Brazil

Small hydropower (SHP) facilities, which are defined by installed capacities 20% net retention of suspended sediments, two others retained between 10 and 20%, seven were within 10%, and six showed >10% net release. Bedload sediment transport was a small component of total sediment transport in rivers with high total sediment loads. Multiyear series of satellite images confirm sediment accumulation in several cases. Model predictions of the impacts of future hydropower facilities on suspended sediment concentrations and transport show retention of a large fraction (often much >20%) of sediment inputs. Summing riverine transport rates for inflows into the Pantanal indicates that currently envisioned future hydropower development would reduce the suspended sediment transport by ∼62% from the current rate. This study shows that if SHPs are built on sediment-rich rivers, this may prove problematic for the facilities as well as for downstream ecosystems. These results support recommendations that several river systems presently lacking dams in their lower reaches should be excluded from future hydropower development to maintain the sediment supply to the Pantanal

© 2019 British Mycological Society. Published by Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.Kyotorphin (KTP, l-tyrosyl-l-arginine) is an endogenous analgesic neuropeptide first isolated from bovine brain in 1979. Previous studies have shown that kyotorphins possess anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial activity. Six kyotorphins—KTP-NH2, KTP–NH2–DL, ibuprofen-conjugated KTP (IbKTP), IbKTP-NH2, N-methyl-D-Tyr-L-Arg, and N-methyl-L-Tyr-D-Arg—were designed and synthesized to improve lipophilicity and resistance to enzymatic degradation. This study assessed the antimicrobial and antibiofilm activity of these peptides. The antifungal activity of kyotorphins was determined in representative strains of Candida species, including Candida albicans ATCC 10231, Candida krusei ATCC 6258, and six clinical isolates—Candida dubliniensis 19-S, Candida glabrata 217-S, Candida lusitaniae 14-S, Candida novergensis 51-S, Candida parapsilosis 63, and Candida tropicalis 140-S—obtained from the oral cavity of HIV-positive patients. The peptides were synthesized by standard solution or solid-phase synthesis, purified by RP-HPLC (purity >95 %), and characterized by nuclear magnetic resonance. The results of the broth microdilution assay and scanning electron microscopy showed that IbKTP-NH2 presented significant antifungal activity against Candida strains and antibiofilm activity against the clinical isolates. The absence of toxic activity and survival after infection was assessed after injecting the peptide in larvae of Galleria mellonella as experimental infection model. Furthermore, IbKTP-NH2 had strong antimicrobial activity against multidrug-resistant bacteria and fungi and was not toxic to G. mellonella larvae up to a concentration of 500 mM. These results suggest that IbKTP-NH2, in addition to its known effect on cell membranes, can elicit a cellular immune response and, therefore, is promising for biomedical application. This research was supported by FAPESP (Grant No. 2017/00032-0). Disorders of sex development (DSD) is the term used for congenital conditions in which development of chromosomal, gonadal, or phenotypic sex is atypical. Nuclear receptor subfamily 5, group A, member 1 gene (NR5A1) encodes steroidogenic factor 1 (SF1), a transcription factor that is involved in gonadal development and regulates adrenal steroidogenesis. Mutations in the NR5A1 gene may lead to different 46,XX or 46,XY DSD phenotypes with or without adrenal failure. We report a Brazilian family with a novel NR5A1 mutation causing ambiguous genitalia in 46,XY affected individuals without Müllerian derivatives and apparently normal Leydig function after birth and at puberty, respectively. Their mother, who is also heterozygous for the mutation, presents evidence of primary ovarian insufficiency. Three siblings with 46,XY DSD, ambiguous genitalia and normal testosterone production were included in the study. Molecular analyses for AR, SRD5A2 genes did not reveal any mutation. However, NR5A2 sequence analysis indicated that all three siblings were heterozygous for the p.Cys65Tyr mutation which was inherited from their mother. In silico analysis was carried out to elucidate the role of the amino acid change on the protein function. After the mutation was identified, all sibs and the mother had been reevaluated. Basal hormone concentrations were normal except that ACTH levels were slightly elevated. After 1 mcg ACTH stimulation test, only the older sib showed subnormal cortisol response. The p.Cys65Tyr mutation located within the second zinc finger of DNA binding domain was considered deleterious upon analysis with predictive algorithms. The identification of heterozygous individuals with this novel mutation may bring additional knowledge on structural modifications that may influence NR5A1 DNA-binding ability, and may also contribute to genotype-phenotype correlations in DSD. The slightly elevated ACTH basal levels in all three patients with 46,XY DSD and the subnormal cortisol response after 1 mcg ACTH stimulation in the older sib indicate that a long-term follow-up for adrenal function is important for these patients. Our data reinforce that NR5A1 analysis must also be performed in 46,XY DSD patients with normal testosterone levels without AR mutations.15

Inflammatory fibrous hyperplasia, also denominated by epulis fissuratum, is related to benign lesions of soft tissue caused by chronic traumas, usually of a prosthesis badly adapted. This lesion attacks the feminine sex preferentially, adults of middle age or older, and users of prostheses. It is more frequent in the anterior area of the jawbone, exophytic, and it can vary from flaccid to solid. The present work reports a case of inflammatory fibrous hyperplasia diagnosticated in a fifty two years old white woman in the clinic of Estomatology I of University of Odontology of UFBA, and it presents reports of the literature regarding that lesion.
