    Localized vibrational modes in optically bound structures

    We show, through analytical theory and rigorous numerical calculations, that optical binding can organize a collection of particles into stable one-dimensional lattice. This lattice, as well as other optically-bound structures, are shown to exhibit spatially localized vibrational eigenmodes. The origin of localization here is distinct from the usual mechanisms such as disorder, defect, or nonlinearity, but is a consequence of the long-ranged nature of optical binding. For an array of particles trapped by an interference pattern, the stable configuration is often dictated by the external light source, but our calculation revealed that inter-particle optical binding forces can have a profound influence on the dynamics.Comment: 4 pages, Optical Bindin

    Spinal Kinematics of Adolescent Male Rowers With Back Pain in Comparison to Matched Controls During Ergometer Rowing.

    There is a high prevalence of low back pain (LBP) in adolescent male rowers. In this study, regional lumbar spinal kinematics and self-reported LBP intensity were compared between 10 adolescent rowers with moderate levels of LBP relating to rowing with 10 reporting no history of LBP during a 15-minute ergometer trial using an electromagnetic tracking system. Adolescent male rowers with LBP reported increasing pain intensity during ergometer rowing. No significant differences were detected in mean upper or lower lumbar angles between rowers with and without LBP. However, compared to rowers without pain, rowers with pain had: 1) relatively less excursion of the upper lumbar spine into extension over the drive phase, 2) relatively less excursion of the lower lumbar spine into extension over time, 3) greater variability in upper and lower lumbar angles over the 15-minute ergometer trial, 4) positioned their upper lumbar spine closer to end range flexion for a greater proportion of the drive phase, and 5) showed increased time in sustained flexion loading in the upper lumbar spine.     No excess of mitochondrial DNA deletions within muscle in progressive multiple sclerosis

    BACKGROUND: Mitochondrial dysfunction is an established feature of multiple sclerosis (MS). We recently described high levels of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) deletions within respiratory enzyme-deficient (lacking mitochondrial respiratory chain complex IV with intact complex II) neurons and choroid plexus epithelial cells in progressive MS. OBJECTIVES: The objective of this paper is to determine whether respiratory enzyme deficiency and mtDNA deletions in MS were in excess of age-related changes within muscle, which, like neurons, are post-mitotic cells that frequently harbour mtDNA deletions with ageing and in disease. METHODS: In progressive MS cases (n=17), known to harbour an excess of mtDNA deletions in the central nervous system (CNS), and controls (n=15), we studied muscle (paraspinal) and explored mitochondria in single fibres. Histochemistry, immunohistochemistry, laser microdissection, real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR), long-range PCR and sequencing were used to resolve the single muscle fibres. RESULTS: The percentage of respiratory enzyme-deficient muscle fibres, mtDNA deletion level and percentage of muscle fibres harbouring high levels of mtDNA deletions were not significantly different in MS compared with controls. CONCLUSION: Our findings do not provide support to the existence of a diffuse mitochondrial abnormality involving multiple systems in MS. Understanding the cause(s) of the CNS mitochondrial dysfunction in progressive MS remains a research priority

    This paper studies happiness in the United States and Great Britain. Reported levels of well-being have declined over the last quarter of a century in the US; life satisfaction has run approximately flat through time in Britain. These findings are consistent with the Easterlin hypothesis [Nations and Households in Economic Growth: Essays in Honour of Moses Abramowitz (1974) Academic Press; J. Econ. Behav. Org., 27 (1995) 35]. The happiness of American blacks, however, has risen. White women in the US have been the biggest losers since the 1970s. Well-being equations have a stable structure. Money buys happiness. People care also about relative income. Well-being is U-shaped in age. The paper estimates the dollar values of events like unemployment and divorce. They are large. A lasting marriage (compared to widowhood as a ‘natural’ experiment), for example, is estimated to be worth $100,000 a year

    Modeling long-range cross-correlations in two-component ARFIMA and FIARCH processes

    We investigate how simultaneously recorded long-range power-law correlated multi-variate signals cross-correlate. To this end we introduce a two-component ARFIMA stochastic process and a two-component FIARCH process to generate coupled fractal signals with long-range power-law correlations which are at the same time long-range cross-correlated. We study how the degree of cross-correlations between these signals depends on the scaling exponents characterizing the fractal correlations in each signal and on the coupling between the signals.     Calls to a home birth helpline: empowerment in childbirth

    In the UK a woman has the right to decide to give birth at home, irrespective of whether she is expecting her first or a subsequent child and of any perceived ‘risk’ factors. However, the rate of home births in the UK is very low (around 2%), varies widely across the country and many women do not know how to arrange midwifery cover. The Home Birth helpline is a UK-based voluntary organisation offering support and information for women planning a home birth. In order to gain direct access to the issues that are of concern to women when planning a home birth, 80 calls to the helpline were recorded. The aims of this paper are to document the problems that callers to this helpline report having when trying to arrange home births and to explore the strategies the call-taker uses in helping women to exercise their right to birth at home. The paper concludes that women are not easily able to exercise their right to choose the place of birth and suggests a number of recommendations for action

    Supersymmetric Time Reversal Violation in Semileptonic Decays of Charged Mesons

    We provide a general analysis of time reversal violation arising from misalignment between quark and squark mass eigenstates. In particular, we focus on the possibility of large enhancement effects due to the top quark mass. For semileptonic decays of the charged mesons, K+→π0ÎŒ+ΜΌK^+ \rightarrow \pi^0 \mu^+ \nu_{\mu}, D+→K‟0ÎŒ+ΜΌD^+ \rightarrow \overline{K}^0 \mu^+ \nu_{\mu}, and B+→D‟0τ+ΜτB^+ \rightarrow \overline{D}^0 \tau^+ \nu_{\tau}, the transverse polarization of the lepton Pl⊄P^{\bot}_l is a TT-odd observable that is of great experimental interest. It is noted that under favorable choice of parameters, PΌ⊄P^{\bot}_{\mu} in KÎŒ3+K^+_{\mu3} decay can be detectable at the ongoing KEK experiment and it holds a promising prospect for discovery at the proposed BNL experiment. Furthermore, Pτ⊄P^{\bot}_{\tau} in B±B^{\pm} decay could well be within the reach of BB factories, but PΌ⊄P^{\bot}_{\mu} in D±D^{\pm} decay is not large enough for detection at the proposed τ\tau-charm factory.Comment: LaTex, 14 pages, 2 figures, minor changes, version to appear in Phys.     Gauge-Dependent Cosmological "Constant"

    When the cosmological constant of spacetime is derived from the 5D induced-matter theory of gravity, we show that a simple gauge transformation changes it to a variable measure of the vacuum which is infinite at the big bang and decays to an astrophysically-acceptable value at late epochs.
