    To the outside observer, soccer is chaotic with no given pattern or scheme to follow, a random conglomeration of passes and shots that go on for 90 minutes. Yet, what if there was a pattern to the chaos, or a way to describe the events that occur in the game quantifiably. Sports statistics is a critical part of baseball and a variety of other of today’s sports, but we see very little statistics and data analysis done on soccer. Of this research, there has been looks into the effect of possession time on the outcome of a game, the difference in passing 5 minutes before and after a goal occurred, and very little else. In this paper, I present an approach to analyzing the passing schemes using a statistical approach to uncover sometimes-nonobvious insights to the game of soccer. I illustrate the utility of my methods by applying it to data from the 2016-2017 Major League Soccer season collected by americansocceranalysis.com. This data includes passes into each section of the field, passes that lead to shots on goals, goals themselves, assists, touch percentage, and much more. By analyzing this data with the statistics software R and with the use of some descriptive statistics results, boxplots, histograms, etc. we will be able to get a physical representation of the data and make conclusions based on them. I would like to explore the idea of the effect of passing on scoring or how the touch percentage of each player contributes to their performance and the outcome of games. The overall goal though is to find results and hopefully spark an interest into further research and data analysis for the beautiful game

    Sexual dimorphism, resource partitioning and intraspecific aggression in Caprella californica Stimpson

    The Caprellidae are a specialized suborder of Amphipoda, which are highly modified for a semisessile life. Caprellids exhibit direct development and brood their young. The suborder is exclusively marine and commonly found on filamentous algae, sea grasses and fouling communities. Most published works on caprellids have been primarily concern~d with systematics (Caine, 1974; Dougherty, 1943; Laubitz, 1970, 1972; McCain, 1968, 1975), although a few recent studies have dealt with ecology and ethology (Bynum, 1978; Caine, 1977; Keith, 1969, 1971; Lewbel, 1978; Saunders, 1966). This study examines·spatial and temporal variations in distribution, abundance and population structure as well as describing intraspecific aggressive behavior of Caprella californica Stimpson. ~- californica is dioecious and has marked sexual dimorphism in both its size and secondary sex characteristics. It is found from San Diego to the South China Sea (Laubitz, 1970), and is the dominant caprellid in the Zostera marina beds of the local bays and is a major diet item for many of the eel grass associated fishes. There is a preponderance of females in the population as well as a size-specific distribution of the proportion of the sexes

    Lake Area Variability Across a Climatic and Vegetational Transect in Southeastern Alberta

    Areas of 34 small lakes forming a transect across the southern margin of the Boreal Forest into the Grassland in southern Alberta were obtained from 326 aerial photographs, with at least six photographs for each lake in different months and different years from 1949 to 1992. Standard deviations of standardised lake areas (used as an index of lake area sensitivity to short term climate fluctuations) were plotted against a climatic moisture index; the resulting scatter of points is constrained by a function relating lake sensitivity to long-term regional climatic moisture. The lakes show high sensitivity in the Grassland where potential Ă©vapotranspiration exceeds precipitation, a steep drop in sensitivity over a small range of climatic moisture values in the Aspen Parkland, and very low sensitivity in the Boreal Forest where precipitation exceeds potential Ă©vapotranspiration.Les superficies de 34 petits lacs constituant un transect Ă  partir de la limite mĂ©ridionale de la forĂȘt borĂ©ale jusqu'Ă  la prairie, dans le sud de l'Alberta. ont Ă©tĂ© calculĂ©es grĂące Ă  l'Ă©tude de 326 photographies aĂ©riennes.     Preparing care home staff to manage challenging behaviours among residents living with dementia: A mixed-methods evaluation

    We evaluated an intervention designed to manage challenging behaviours of people with dementia. Framework analysis of interviews (n = 21) showed the intervention modified practice and perceptions. The intervention (n = 58; power calculation proposed n = 160 for medium effect) had no significant effect on attitudes to dementia for time (p = .42) or care home (p = .15). The Maslach burnout scores did not change significantly for person-centredness for time (p = .83) or care home (p = .29). Hope scores showed a significant effect post-intervention (p = .004), but this was not maintained. No significant main effect was found for care home (p = .36). Experiential learning enabled staff to experience benefits of person-centred care firsthand

    Blockade of collagen-induced arthritis post-onset by antibody to granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF): requirement for GM-CSF in the effector phase of disease

    There is mounting evidence for a role of the growth factor granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF) in inflammatory disease, including arthritis. In the present study, we examined the effectiveness of treatment of collagen-induced arthritis (CIA) with a neutralizing mAb to GM-CSF. DBA/1 mice were immunized for the development of CIA and treated at different times, and with different doses, with neutralizing mAb to GM-CSF or isotype control mAb. Anti-GM-CSF mAb treatment prior to the onset of arthritis, at the time of antigen challenge, was effective at ameliorating the ensuing disease. Modulation of arthritis was seen predominantly as a reduction in overall disease severity, both in terms of the number of limbs affected per mouse and the clinical score of affected limbs. Importantly, anti-GM-CSF mAb treatment ameliorated existing disease, seen both as a reduction in the number of initially affected limbs progressing and lower numbers of additional limbs becoming affected. By histology, both inflammation and cartilage destruction were reduced in anti-GM-CSF-treated mice, and the levels of tumor necrosis factor-a and IL-1? were also reduced in joint tissue washouts of these mice. Neither humoral nor cellular immunity to type II collagen, however, was affected by anti-GM-CSF mAb treatment. These results suggest that the major effect of GM-CSF in CIA is on mediating the effector phase of the inflammatory reaction to type II collagen. The results also highlight the essential role of GM-CSF in the ongoing development of inflammation and arthritis in CIA, with possible therapeutic implications for rheumatoid arthritis

    Safety and pharmacokinetics of MM-302, a HER2-targeted antibody–liposomal doxorubicin conjugate, in patients with advanced HER2-positive breast cancer: A phase 1 dose-escalation study

    BackgroundThis phase 1 dose-escalation trial studied MM-302, a novel HER2-targeted PEGylated antibody-liposomal doxorubicin conjugate, in HER2-positive locally advanced/metastatic breast cancer.MethodsPatients were enrolled in four cohorts: MM-302 monotherapy (8, 16, 30, 40, and 50 mg/m2 every 4 weeks [q4w]); MM-302 (30 or 40 mg/m2 q4w) plus trastuzumab (4 mg/kg q2w); MM-302 (30 mg/m2) plus trastuzumab (6 mg/kg) q3w; MM-302 (30 mg/m2) plus trastuzumab (6 mg/kg) and cyclophosphamide (450 mg/m2) q3w.ResultsSixty-nine patients were treated. The most common adverse events (AEs) were fatigue and nausea. Grade 3/4 AEs of special interest included neutropenia, fatigue, mucosal inflammation, anemia, thrombocytopenia, febrile neutropenia, and palmar-plantar erythrodysesthesia. The MTD was not reached. With MM-302 ≄ 30 mg/m2, overall response rate (ORR) was 13% and median progression-free survival (mPFS) 7.4 months (95% CI: 3·5-10·9) in all arms. In 25 anthracycline-naĂŻve patients, ORR was 28·0% and mPFS 10·9 months (95% CI: 1·8-15·3). Imaging with 64Cu-labeled MM-302 visualized tumor-drug penetrance in tumors throughout the body, including the brain.ConclusionMM-302 monotherapy, in combination with trastuzumab, or trastuzumab plus cyclophosphamide, was well tolerated and showed promising efficacy. The selected phase 2 MM-302 dose was 30 mg/m2 plus 6 mg/kg trastuzumab q3w

    Integrated TiO2 resonators for visible photonics

    We demonstrate waveguide-coupled titanium dioxide (TiO2) racetrack resonators with loaded quality factors of 2x10^4 for the visible wavelengths. The structures were fabricated in sputtered TiO2 thin films on oxidized silicon substrates using standard top-down nanofabrication techniques, and passively probed in transmission measurements using a tunable red laser. Devices based on this material could serve as integrated optical elements as well as passive platforms for coupling to visible quantum emitters.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure
