Resolving vibrational from electronic coherences in two-dimensional electronic spectroscopy: The role of the laser spectrum

The observation of coherent quantum effects in photosynthetic light-harvesting complexes prompted the question whether quantum coherence could be exploited to improve the efficiency in new energy materials. The detailed characterization of coherent effects relies on sensitive methods such as two-dimensional electronic spectroscopy (2D-ES). However, the interpretation of the results produced by 2D-ES is challenging due to the many possible couplings present in complex molecular structures. In this work, we demonstrate how the laser spectral profile can induce electronic coherence-like signals in monomeric chromophores, potentially leading to data misinterpretation. We argue that the laser spectrum acts as a filter for certain coherence pathways and thus propose a general method to differentiate vibrational from electronic coherences

INTRODUCTION: Patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) when subjected to resistance exercise (RE) show substantial improvements in many functions, especially those related to the cardiovascular system, respiratory, muscular and quality of life (QOL). There are no evaluations of the impact of exercise simple and feasible in patients with CKD associated with Diabetes Mellitus (DM) during the intradialytic period. Thus, patients with CKD and submit to the DM + RE during hemodialysis. OBJECTIVE: To study the role of resistance exercise in the treatment and quality of life in patients undergoing chronic hemodialysis (HD). METHODS: 15 patients in each group: 1: DM with CKD and RE; 2: DM + CKD sedentary; 3: CKD + RE and 4: DRC sedentary. They were evaluated during eight weeks, with RE three times a week. Parameters: Laboratory assessments, muscle strength testing (FM) and QV (SF-36). RESULTS: RE induced improvement in glucose and FM with subtle but significant changes in urea, or even in the K (p < 0.0001). It was an improvement in the impact assessment of QOL parameters (p < 0.001) with the RE, such as Functional Capacity, Physical Aspect, Reduction of Pain (in general), General Health, Vitality, Social Function, Emotional State and Mental Health. CONCLUSION: The RE program (simple and feasible) during intradialytic clinical parameters changed FM and a significant improvement in QOL assessment were observed. The impact on QOL was important for the patient, including those involving improvement in level of family and social relationships when subjected to RE.INTRODUÇÃO: Pacientes com doença renal crônica (DRC) quando submetidos ao exercício resistido (ER) apresentam substancial melhorias de muitas funções, em especial os relacionados ao sistema cardiovascular, respiratório, muscular e na qualidade de vida (QV).

BackgroundParacoccidioidomycosis (PCM) is a life-threatening systemic disease and is a neglected public health problem in many endemic regions of Latin America. Though several diagnostic methods are available, almost all of them present with some limitations.Method/Principle FindingsA latex immunoassay using sensitized latex particles (SLPs) with gp43 antigen, the immunodominant antigen of Paracoccidioides brasiliensis, or the monoclonal antibody mAb17c (anti-gp43) was evaluated for antibody or antigen detection in sera, cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), and bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) from patients with PCM due to P. brasiliensis. the gp43-SLPs performed optimally to detect specific antibodies with high levels of sensitivity (98.46%, 95% CI 91.7-100.0), specificity (93.94%, 95% CI 87.3-97.7), and positive (91.4%) and negative (98.9%) predictive values. in addition, we propose the use of mAb17c-SLPs to detect circulating gp43, which would be particularly important in patients with immune deficiencies who fail to produce normal levels of immunoglobulins, achieving good levels of sensitivity (96.92%, 95% CI 89.3-99.6), specificity (88.89%, 95% CI 81.0-94.3), and positive (85.1%) and negative (97.8%) predictive values. Very good agreement between latex tests and double immune diffusion was observed for gp43-SLPs (k = 0.924) and mAb17c-SLPs (k = 0.850), which reinforces the usefulness of our tests for the rapid diagnosis of PCM in less than 10 minutes. Minor cross-reactivity occurred with sera from patients with other fungal infections. We successfully detected antigens and antibodies from CSF and BAL samples. in addition, the latex test was useful for monitoring PCM patients receiving therapy.Conclusions/SignificanceThe high diagnostic accuracy, low cost, reduced assay time, and simplicity of this new latex test offer the potential to be commercialized and makes it an attractive diagnostic assay for use not only in clinics and medical mycology laboratories, but mainly in remote locations with limited laboratory infrastructure and/or minimally trained community health workers.Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado de São Paulo (FAPESP)Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico (CNPq)Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior (CAPES)Universidade Federal de São Paulo, Dept Microbiol Immunol & Parasitol, Div Cell Biol, São Paulo, BrazilEvandro Chagas Inst, Bacteriol & Mycol Div, Ananindeua, Para, BrazilUniv Fed Alfenas, Inst Biomed Sci, Alfenas, MG, BrazilUniversidade Federal de São Paulo, Dept Microbiol Immunol & Parasitol, Div Cell Biol, São Paulo, BrazilFAPESP: FAPESP 2011/07350-1FAPESP: 2011/01628-8FAPESP: 2009/54181-0FAPESP: 2009/54024-2Web of Scienc

    Get PDF
The performances of healthy individuals in an incremental shuttle walking test performed in a hallway (ISWT-H) and on a treadmill (ISWT-T) were compared to assess their physiological responses during aerobic training sessions with the speeds estimated from both tests. This was a cross-sectional study with 55 healthy subjects, who were randomized to perform the ISWT tests with 24 hours between them. Training sessions were held using a treadmill at 75% of the speeds obtained from the ISWT-H and ISWT-T. Measurements included walking distance, oxygen uptake (VO2 ), carbon dioxide (VCO2 ) production, heart rate (HR), and ventilation (VE). There was a significant difference between walking distances (ISWT-T: 823.9±165.2 m and ISWT-H:685.4±141.4 m), but similar physiological responses for VO2 (28.6±6.6 vs. 29.0±7.3 ml-1.kg-1.min-1), VCO2 (1.9±0.7 vs. 1.9±0.5 1), HR (158.3±17.8 vs. 158.6±17.7 bpm), and VE (41.5±10.4 vs. 43.7±12.9 1). The estimated speeds were different for the training sessions (5.5±0.5 km/h and 4.9±0.3 km/h), as well as the VO2 , VCO2 , VE, and HR. It was concluded that in healthy young adults, ISWTs carried out in a hallway and on a treadmill are not interchangeable. Since the ISWT-H was determined to have lower speed, the training intensity based on this test may underestimate a patient’s responses to aerobic training

This paper proposes a reading of the historical moment that characterizes post-finalism in Criminal Law. In this sense, we start from the conception of postmodernity programmatically presented by Antonio Luis Chaves Camargo at the end of the 90’s. Taking the provocations of the former professor of FDUSP as a starting point, this article presents the contribution of systems theory and discursive theory of law for this legal branch

Paracoccidioides lutzii is a new agent of paracoccidioidomycosis (PCM) and has its epicenter localized to the Central-West region of Brazil. Serological diagnosis of PCM caused by P. lutzii has not been established. This study aimed to develop new antigenic preparations from P. lutzii and to apply them in serological techniques to improve the diagnosis of PCM due to P. lutzii. Paracoccidioides lutzii exoantigens, cell free antigen (CFA), and a TCA-precipitated antigen were evaluated in immunodiffusion (ID) tests using a total of 89 patient sera from the Central-West region of Brazil. Seventy-two sera were defined as reactive for P. brasiliensis using traditional antigens (AgPbB339 and gp43). Non-reactive sera for traditional antigens (n = 17) were tested with different P. lutzii preparations and P. lutzii CFA showed 100% reactivity. ELISA was found to be a very useful test to titer anti-P. lutzii antibodies using P. lutzii-CFA preparations. Sera from patients with PCM due to P. lutzii presented with higher antibody titers than PCM due to P. brasiliensis and heterologous sera. in western blot, sera from patients with PCM due to P. lutzii were able to recognize antigenic molecules from the P. lutzii-CFA antigen, but sera from patients with PCM due to P. brasiliensis could not recognize any P. lutzii molecules. Due to the facility of preparing P. lutzii CFA antigens we recommend its use in immunodiffusion tests for the diagnosis of PCM due to P. lutzii. ELISA and western blot can be used as complementary tests.Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado de São Paulo (FAPESP)Universidade Federal de São Paulo UNIFESP, Dept Microbiol Imunol & Parasitol, Disciplina Biol Celular, São Paulo, BrazilUniv Fed Mato Grosso do Sul UFMS, Fac Med FAMED, Campo Grande, MS, BrazilUniv Fed Mato Grosso UFMT, Nucleo Doencas Infecciosas & Trop, Cuiaba, Mato Grosso, BrazilUniversidade Federal de São Paulo UNIFESP, Dept Microbiol Imunol & Parasitol, Disciplina Biol Celular, São Paulo, BrazilFAPESP: 2012/06593-0FAPESP: 2009/54024-2Web of Scienc

Modulation of nitro-oxidative parameters in mice administered with very low doses of the iridoid plumieride / Modulação de parâmetros nitro-oxidativos em camundongos tratados com doses baixíssimas de plumierídeo

Our group has been investigating the anti-inflammatory and antidepressant-like effects of plumieride (PLU 0.5, 1, 2 µg/Kg). However, there is no record in the literature about the in vivo antioxidant activity of PLU at very low doses, which could be linked with pharmacology effects. Here, we administered mice with vehicle and PLU 0.5, 1, or 2 µg/Kg for 7 days. Subsequently, we evaluated the modulation of lipoperoxidation, nitrite, protein carbonylation, and non-protein thiols triggered by PLU in mice’s brain, plasma, liver, and kidneys. Our results support, at least in part, the pharmacological potential that has been attributed to iridoid

This study’s objective was to analyze the factors associated with MSM’s (men who have sex with men) low psychological well-being in the COVID-19 pandemic context. Method: This cross-sectional study was conducted online across Brazil (26 states and federal district) in April and May 2020. The participants were recruited using snowball sampling and Facebook posts. Data were collected using social media and MSM dating apps. We estimated the prevalence, crude prevalence ratio (PR), and the respective confidence intervals (CI95%). Results: The prevalence of low psychological well-being found in the sample was 7.9%. Associated factors were belonging to the youngest group (PR 2.76; CI95% 1.90–4.01), having polyamorous relationships (PR 2.78; CI95% 1.51–5.11), not complying with social isolation measures (PR 6.27; CI95% 4.42–8.87), not using the social media to find partners (PR 1.63; CI95% 1.06–2.53), having multiple sexual partners (PR 1.80; CI95% 1.04–3.11), having reduced the number of partners (PR 2.67; CI95% 1.44–4.95), and group sex (PR 1.82; CI95% 1.23–2.69) Conclusion: The well-being of MSM living in Brazil was negatively affected during the social distancing measures intended to control the spread of COVID-19. The variables that contributed the most to this outcome include social isolation, relationships established with partners, and sexual behavior. Policy Implications: Planning and implementing public policies and actions to promote psychological well-being are needed to improve MSM’s resilience by adopting safe strategies and behavior.publishersversionpublishe
