Comments relating to models and practice of communication for development
The document reflects the formalization of more than forty
years of practice of communication processes and teaching
some basic concepts about the practice of Communication
for Development. This article starts with an unorthodox
definition of development, followed by a definition of a
theoretical model of communication, different from the
commonly accepted too. It presents the significances and
limits of communication processes.
This research follows a rough draft of neuropsychobiological perception processes of the messages, basically
the audiovisual treatment, in which language elements
alphanumeric, graphics and visual signs are based.
Determines and evaluates an essential input, but not
enough, for the development model proposed: the
“knowledge”, as integrating elements of knowledge
described and enrolled.
It analyzes the role of the different instruments available
for the production and reproduction of messages and
criteria for choosing them. It discuss some experiences in
rural areas and in university circles. And finally, consider
the basic problem of the training of professionals

Observations of X-ray binaries using the Australia Telescope Compact Array - compact array broadband backend
The exploration of radio emission from the relativistic jets of X-ray binaries has become key to understanding accretion onto compact objects. Upgrades to existing radio telescope arrays have improved the ability of these instruments to detect faint sources and their unique behaviours. In this thesis I address the use of one such instrument in observing several X-ray binary systems: the Australia Telescope Compact Array - Compact Array Broadband Backend (ATCA-CABB). Firstly, a study of the adverse effects that may arise when imaging spectrally variable sources using broad bandwidths, with emphasis on ATCA-CABB. Images are produced from model data and examined to find any false structures. I then discuss complications that such features may cause when attempting to interpret real structure in images.Secondly, the results of attempts to observe the black hole X-ray binaries, GRO J1655-40 and XTE J1550-564, in quiescence with ATCA-CABB are presented. Upper limits from the non-detection of these sources are used in exploring the lower luminosity region of the radio/X-ray correlation for hard state black hole X-ray binaries and the implications of “universal” scatter is discussed.Thirdly, a 16 day campaign observing the radio emission of the neutron star Xray binary Circinus X-1 over a complete orbit during an historically faint state is presented. Variability in the source is examined and corrected images are compared with archival maps in order to find any differences. I discuss my findings in terms of secular changes in jet geometry and behaviour. Finally, the first successful millimetre detections of neutron star X-ray binaries Circinus X-1 and Scorpius X-1 are presented. Sub-arcsecond jet structure in CircinusX-1 is compared to the existing centimetre maps, providing additional support for theories proposed earlier in the thesis. The radio to mm spectrum of both sources is estimated and discussed. This thesis concludes with a description of the broader impacts of the above projects, as well as possibilities for future research in each field

Short-term effects of deep ploughing on soil C stocks following renewal of a dairy pasture in New Zealand
In New Zealand’s high producing permanent pastures the topsoil constitutes a large reservoir of soil organic carbon (SOC), which shows a marked stratification with depth. As consequence, sub-surface layers can contain 10 times less carbon than the surface soil. In permanent pastures with high carbon inputs, the formation and decomposition of these surface SOC stocks are often at equilibrium and C storage shows little change over time. Pastoral based dairy systems utilising ryegrass plus clover cultivars require renewal every 7-10 years to avoid reversion to less productive grasses. This may involve spring cultivation (either no-till, shallow till or full cultivation), summer forage cropping and autumn re-grassing. It has been hypothesised that SOC stocks can be increased by inverting the soil profile at pasture renewal through infrequent (once in 25-30 years) deep mouldboard ploughing (up to 30 cm depth). Increased C sequestration occurs when the new grass quickly rebuilds SOC stocks in the new topsoil (exposed low C sub-soil) at a rate faster than the decomposition of SOC in the rich former topsoil transferred to depth (now below 15 cm). However, benefits form accelerated C storage may be offset if crop and pasture production is adversely affected by the ploughing event (e.g., as result of compaction or excessive drainage). Hence, the aim of this work was to assess the short-term effects of infrequent inversion tillage of long-term New Zealand pastoral-based dairy soils under summer crop management and autumn re-grassing. An imperfectly drained Typic Fragiaqualf under dairy grazing was deep ploughed (approx. 25 cm) and re-sown with turnip in October 2016; other treatments included were shallow (< 10 cm) cultivation and no-till. The site was core sampled (0-40 cm) before cultivation and after 5 months of turnip growth to assess changes in SOC. Plant growth, herbage quality, and nutrient leaching were monitored during the 5-month period; root growth was assessed at the end of the crop rotation. Full cultivation transferred SOC below 10 cm depth, as expected. Soil bulk density decreased whereas root mass increased (10-20 cm depth; P < 0.05) under deep cultivation only. Besides, losses of mineral N were attenuated under deep tillage, resulting in a relative increase in crop yield. The potential for infrequent inversion tillage increasing soil C sequestration as a greenhouse gas (GHG) mitigation tool is currently being tested at other sites in New Zealand
Polo tanto, a relevancia desta
implantar políticas que fomenten a eficiencia enerxética e a redución do consumo
