Electrical transport and optical studies of ferromagnetic Cobalt doped ZnO nanoparticles exhibiting a metal-insulator transition
The observed correlation of oxygen vacancies and room temperature
ferromagnetic ordering in Co doped ZnO1-o nanoparticles reported earlier (Naeem
et al Nanotechnology 17, 2675-2680) has been further explored by transport and
optical measurements. In these particles room temperature ferromagnetic
ordering had been observed to occur only after annealing in forming gas. In the
current work the optical properties have been studied by diffuse reflection
spectroscopy in the UV-Vis region and the band gap of the Co doped compositions
has been found to decrease with Co addition. Reflections minima are observed at
the energies characteristic of Co+2 d-d (tethrahedral symmetry) crystal field
transitions, further establishing the presence of Co in substitutional sites.
Electrical transport measurements on palletized samples of the nanoparticles
show that the effect of a forming gas is to strongly decrease the resistivity
with increasing Co concentration. For the air annealed and non-ferromagnetic
samples the variation in the resistivity as a function of Co content are
opposite to those observed in the particles prepared in forming gas. The
ferromagnetic samples exhibit an apparent change from insulator to metal with
increasing temperatures for T>380K and this change becomes more pronounced with
increasing Co content. The magnetic and resistive behaviors are correlated by
considering the model by Calderon et al [M. J. Calderon and S. D. Sarma, Annals
of Physics 2007 (Accepted doi: 10.1016/j.aop.2007.01.010] where the
ferromagnetism changes from being mediated by polarons in the low temperature
insulating region to being mediated by the carriers released from the weakly
bound states in the higher temperature metallic region.Comment: 7 pages, 6 figure
The first direct measurement of ¹²C (¹²C,n) ²³Mg at stellar energies
Neutrons produced by the carbon fusion reaction ¹²C(¹²C,n)²³Mg play an important role in stellar nucleosynthesis. However, past studies have shown large discrepancies between experimental data and theory, leading to an uncertain cross section extrapolation at astrophysical energies. We present the first direct measurement that extends deep into the astrophysical energy range along with a new and improved extrapolation technique based on experimental data from the mirror reaction ¹²C(¹²C,p)²³Na. The new reaction rate has been determined with a well-defined uncertainty that exceeds the precision required by astrophysics models. Using our constrained rate, we find that ¹²C(¹²C,n)²³Mg is crucial to the production of Na and Al in Pop-III Pair Instability Supernovae. It also plays a non-negligible role in the production of weak s-process elements as well as in the production of the important galacti
Stellar ArAr reactions and their effect on light neutron-rich nuclide synthesis
The ArAr ( = 35 d) and
ArAr (269 y) reactions were studied for the first time
with a quasi-Maxwellian ( keV) neutron flux for Maxwellian Average
Cross Section (MACS) measurements at stellar energies. Gas samples were
irradiated at the high-intensity Soreq applied research accelerator
facility-liquid-lithium target neutron source and the Ar/Ar and
Ar/Ar ratios in the activated samples were determined by
accelerator mass spectrometry at the ATLAS facility (Argonne National
Laboratory). The Ar activity was also measured by low-level counting at
the University of Bern. Experimental MACS of Ar and Ar, corrected
to the standard 30 keV thermal energy, are 1.9(3) mb and 1.3(2) mb,
respectively, differing from the theoretical and evaluated values published to
date by up to an order of magnitude. The neutron capture cross sections of
Ar are relevant to the stellar nucleosynthesis of light neutron-rich
nuclides; the two experimental values are shown to affect the calculated mass
fraction of nuclides in the region A=36-48 during the weak -process. The new
production cross sections have implications also for the use of Ar and
Ar as environmental tracers in the atmosphere and hydrosphere.Comment: 18 pages + Supp. Mat. (13 pages) Accepted for publication in Phys.

Comparative Analysis of Asthma Incidence Between Breastfed and Bottle-fed Children (Aged 3-7 Years Old)
This study primarily aimed to compare the incidence of asthma between breastfed and bottle-fed children. And to determine if the demographic characteristics such as age, sex, ordinal position in the family and familial history of asthma affect the incidence of asthma as well. This study used Comparative-Survey Design through self-structured questionnaire given to the parents of the respondents who were the 3-7 year-old asthmatic children, selected through purposive sampling technique. The data gathered were thentabulated and analyzed using Chi-Square Method of Association. It was found out that most of the asthmatic respondents were between 5-7 years old which showed a high association between the age and the incidence of asthma. It implies that as the age increases, the incidence of asthma also increases. Results also showed that males are more likely to have high incidence of asthma than females. The incidence of asthma is likewise higher in eldest respondents than the middle or youngest. Moreover, there is a significant relationship between the familial history of asthma and its incidence. And finally, the feeding status of the respondents whether breastfed or bottle-fed during the first 6 months of life affects the incidence of asthma as the incidence is higher in bottle-fed than in breastfed respondent
Panchromatic observations and modeling of the HV Tau C edge-on disk
We present new high spatial resolution (<~ 0.1") 1-5 micron adaptive optics
images, interferometric 1.3 mm continuum and 12CO 2-1 maps, and 350 micron, 2.8
and 3.3 mm fluxes measurements of the HV Tau system. Our adaptive optics images
reveal an unusually slow orbital motion within the tight HV Tau AB pair that
suggests a highly eccentric orbit and/or a large deprojected physical
separation. Scattered light images of the HV Tau C edge-on protoplanetary disk
suggest that the anisotropy of the dust scattering phase function is almost
independent of wavelength from 0.8 to 5 micron, whereas the dust opacity
decreases significantly over the same range. The images further reveal a marked
lateral asymmetry in the disk that does not vary over a timescale of 2 years.
We further detect a radial velocity gradient in the disk in our 12CO map that
lies along the same position angle as the elongation of the continuum emission,
which is consistent with Keplerian rotation around an 0.5-1 Msun central star,
suggesting that it could be the most massive component in the triple system. We
use a powerful radiative transfer model to compute synthetic disk observations
and use a Bayesian inference method to extract constraints on the disk
properties. Each individual image, as well as the spectral energy distribution,
of HV Tau C can be well reproduced by our models with fully mixed dust provided
grain growth has already produced larger-than-interstellar dust grains.
However, no single model can satisfactorily simultaneously account for all
observations. We suggest that future attempts to model this source include more
complex dust properties and possibly vertical stratification. (Abridged)Comment: 26 pages, 11 figures, editorially accepted for publication in Ap
An experimental and theoretical study on the crystal structure and elastic properties of Ta1-xOx coatings
The production of Ta1-xOx coatings has attracted a lot of attention due to their wide variety of industrial applications. Nonetheless, to properly control the functional properties of these coatings, a good understanding of their structural properties must be achieved. Ta1-xOx phases have structural similarities since they are formed by the distortion of the body centered cubic (bcc) Ta structure and, therefore, a clear and unequivocal identification of the crystalline phases is not trivial. In this regard, this work proposes a theoretical and experimental study to understand the evolution of the structural and the elastic properties of Ta-based coatings. The coatings were deposited by magnetron sputtering as a function of oxygen content and characterized by EPMA (electron probe microanalysis), XRD (X-ray diffraction), STEM (scanning transmission electron microscopy) and SAW (surface acoustic waves). The results demonstrate the formation of a bcc alpha-Ta phase in the non-reactive Ta coating, which transitions to a mixture of crystalline tantalum and tantalum oxide phases for low oxygen concentrations while amorphous phases are observed for high oxygen levels. Ab-initio calculations of different Ta-O phases are in good agreement with the experimental results and reveal that the oxygen addition to the metallic Ta phase, leads to a distortion of the Ta crystal structure, causing a decrease in density and an increase of the elastic constants.- This research is sponsored by FEDER funds through the program COMPETE -Programa Operacional Factores de Competitividade and by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) in the framework of the Strategic Funding UID/FIS/04650/2013, and UID/EMS/00285/2013 and with a PhD fellowship SFRH/BD/98199/2013. Ag+ release inhibition from ZrCN–Ag coatings by surface agglomeration mechanism : structural characterization
Published 17 July 2013New multifunctional materials based on well-established materials to which functional properties are added, such as antibacterial performance, have become a relevant research topic, in order to meet the requirements of today's technological advances. This paper reports the results of a detailed structural and chemical characterization study of ZrCN–Ag coatings produced by reactive magnetron sputtering, as well as the release of silver after immersion in a simulated body fluid (Hank's balanced salt solution), which mimic the material behaviour within the human body. The chemical composition was evaluated by electron probe microanalysis, x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and Rutherford backscattering spectroscopy, whereas the structure was assessed by Raman spectroscopy and x-ray diffraction. The material exhibits a homogeneous distribution of the elements throughout the films, with a (C + N)/Zr ratio of around 1.3 and 15 at% of silver. A mixture of amorphous (a-C and CNx) and crystalline phases (ZrCN) was identified. In addition, the silver was detected to be released in less than 0.7% of the total silver in the films, occurring during the first two hours of immersion; no further release was evidenced after this period of time. This research is partially sponsored by FEDER funds through the program COMPETE-Programa Operacional Factores de Competitividade and by Portuguese national funds through FCT-Fundacao para a Ciencia e a Tecnologia, under the projects ANTIMICROBCOAT-PTDC/CTM/102853/2008.
