Saint Sebastian. An iconographic study: From painting to film

    Get PDF
This ’article aims to show a first approximation which allows a better understanding of the iconography of St Sebastian. Firstly, it will be considered what literary sources such as Passio refers about him. Secondly, this thesis will analyze the evolution of the iconography of this military saint until Contemporary art, taking into account some written sources. Finally, it will be given consideration to the influence of his iconographic model and his first martyrdom in audiovisual media, taking as an example a large number of representative works, among which six medieval paintings, seven Renaissance paintings, a fifteenth-century engraving, a Renaissance sculpture, five baroque paintings, two twentieth-century drawings, two XXI-century pictorial examples and four stills stand out. of representative films, both from its European and American context

Runaway and Hypervelocity Stars from Compact Object Encounters in Globular Clusters

The dense environments in the cores of globular clusters (GCs) facilitate many strong dynamical encounters among stellar objects. These encounters have been shown capable of ejecting stars from the host GC, whereupon they become runaway stars, or hypervelocity stars if unbound to the galactic potential. We study high speed stellar ejecta originating from GCs by using Monte Carlo N-body models, in particular focusing on binary-single encounters involving compact objects. We pair our model-discriminated populations with observational catalogs of Milky Way GCs to compose a present-day galactic population of stellar ejecta. We find that these kinds of encounters can accelerate stars to velocities in excess of 2000 km/s, to speeds beyond the previously predicted limits for ejecta from star-only encounters and in the same regime of galactic center ejections. However, the same ejections can only account for 1.5-20% of the total population of stellar runaways, and only 0.0001-1% of hypervelocity stars, with similar relative rates found for runaway white dwarfs. We also provide credible regions for ejecta from 149 Milky Way GCs, which we hope will be useful as supplementary evidence when pairing runaway stars with origin GCs.Comment: 16 pages, 11 figures, accepted for publication in Ap

    Get PDF

Revision of the genus \u3cem\u3eTityopsis\u3c/em\u3e Armas, 1974 (Scorpiones: Buthidae). Part 1. General updates and description of four new species

    Get PDF
The buthid scorpion genus Tityopsis Armas, 1974, endemic to western Cuba, is herein revised. In total, 428 specimens were examined from 127 localities, including the primary types of the two species currently recognized as valid; this led to realize that several populations actually represent taxa new to science. Four of them are described in the present paper: a presumed troglobite and three others from epigean habitats. A thorough photographic complement and data on natural history are given for each species and for the genus in general, for which known geographical distribution is verified and updated. With this contribution, the scorpion fauna of Cuba reaches now 61 species, with 56 of them (92%) being endemic to this Caribbean archipelago

The missing piece of the puzzle solved: \u3cem\u3eHeteronebo\u3c/em\u3e Pocock, 1899 (Scorpiones: Scorpionidae) occurs at Isla de Pinos, Cuba

The diplocentrine scorpion genus Heteronebo Pocock, 1899 is recorded herein for the first time from Isla de Pinos, southwestern Cuba. A total of 15 specimens of Heteronebo bermudezi (Moreno, 1938) were collected in two nearby localities of the southern coast of the island, where it occurs in exactly the same habitat previously known for this species in Guanahacabibes Peninsula and two cays of Canarreos Archipelago. The allegedly polytypic status of this species is also revised and full species rank is restored to the subspecies Heteronebo bermudezi morenoi (Armas, 1973). An updated distribution map of H. bermudezi is provided
