This work results from the systematic observation of a population with microcephaly, with a high incidence in the Brazilian Northeast. We verified that microcephalic patients are located in a sociocultural instance informed mainly by audiovisuals, which is evident in the frequent recurrence of the expression "civilization of the image". In this context, we perceive that audiovisual media culture produces a representation of microcephaly carriers through cliché and preconception, which results in stigmatization, formation of negative affects, self-esteem demotion and identity crisis on the part of these individuals. In this way, qualitative research try to contribute to the affirmative exercise of a "communicative action", which contributes to the elevation of self-esteem, subjectivity and social inclusion of the individuals. So we start from the hypothesis that, depending on the "ways of using" the selfie, this can have a favorable repercussion. And in this direction, we find a "prototype of an smart mirror" to facilitate the self-portraits of people with special needs, or by their caregivers. In short, our object is the selfie of disabled people modeled by the equipment of the "smart mirror."Este trabalho resulta da observação sistemática de uma população portadora de microcefalia, com alta incidência no Nordeste Brasileiro.

The "8 Green" Project has the objective of recovering the Ciliary Forest around the dam, but, as the number 8 itself (EIGHT), symbolizes or also signifies the infinite, which refers so much to the constant preservation of the environment in which we live. The proposal of the research had as field of investigation the Green Eight Association, located in the city of Boqueirão, Cariri Oriental Paraibano. From the files and records in the project records a cut was drawn from the minimum number of 200 seedlings distributed by CPF or CNPJ, INCRA and spatial distribution of these seedlings. Therefore, Project 8 Verde, and at least for the target audience interviewed, has achieved the goals of affording the streets, squares and especially the banks of President Epitácio Pessoa, the main reason for its creation.O Projeto “8 Verde” têm o objetivo de recuperar a Mata Ciliar em torno do açude, mas, como o próprio número 8 (OITO), simboliza ou significa também o infinito, que tanto se refere à preservação constante do meio em que vivemos.

Urinary CC16 after challenge with dry air hyperpnoea and mannitol in recreational summer athletes

Airway epithelial injury is regarded as a key contributing factor to the pathogenesis of exercise-induced bronchoconstriction (EIB) in athletes. The concentration of the pneumoprotein club cell (Clara cell) CC16 in urine has been found to be a non-invasive marker for hyperpnoea-induced airway epithelial perturbation. Exercise-hyperpnoea induces mechanical, thermal and osmotic stress to the airways. We investigated whether osmotic stress alone causes airway epithelial perturbation in athletes with suspected EIB. Twenty-four recreational summer sports athletes who reported respiratory symptoms on exertion performed a standard eucapnic voluntary hyperpnoea test with dry air and a mannitol test (osmotic challenge) on separate days. Median urinary CC16 increased from 120 to 310 ρg μmol creatinine-1 after dry air hyperpnoea (P = 0.002) and from 90 to 191 ρg μmol creatinine-1 after mannitol (P = 0.021). There was no difference in urinary CC16 concentration between athletes who did or did not bronchoconstrict after dry air hyperpnoea or mannitol. We conclude that, in recreational summer sports athletes with respiratory symptoms, osmotic stress per se to the airway epithelium induces a rise in urinary excretion of CC16. This suggests that hyperosmolarity of the airway surface lining perturbs the airway epithelium in symptomatic athletes. The study was independently supported financially by the World Anti Doping Agency (WADA). Pharmaxis Ltd. provided the mannitol kits free of charge and approved submission of the manuscript for publication

Bipolar HII regions - Morphology and star formation in their vicinity - I - G319.88++00.79 and G010.32-00.15

Our goal is to identify bipolar HII regions and to understand their morphology, their evolution, and the role they play in the formation of new generations of stars. We use the Spitzer and Herschel Hi-GAL surveys to identify bipolar HII regions. We search for their exciting star(s) and estimate their distances using near-IR data. Dense clumps are detected using Herschel-SPIRE data. MALT90 observations allow us to ascertain their association with the central HII region. We identify Class 0/I YSOs using their Spitzer and Herschel-PACS emissions. These methods will be applied to the entire sample of candidate bipolar HII regions. This paper focuses on two bipolar HII regions, one interesting in terms of its morphology, G319.88++00.79, and one in terms of its star formation, G010.32-00.15. Their exciting clusters are identified and their photometric distances estimated to be 2.6 kpc and 1.75 kpc, respectively. We suggest that these regions formed in dense and flat structures that contain filaments. They have a central ionized region and ionized lobes perpendicular to the parental cloud. The remains of the parental cloud appear as dense (more than 10^4 per cm^3) and cold (14-17 K) condensations. The dust in the PDR is warm (19-25 K). Dense massive clumps are present around the central ionized region. G010.32-00.14 is especially remarkable because five clumps of several hundred solar masses surround the central HII region; their peak column density is a few 10^23 per cm^2, and the mean density in their central regions reaches several 10^5 per cm^3. Four of them contain at least one massive YSO; these clumps also contain extended green objects and Class II methanol masers. This morphology suggests that the formation of a second generation of massive stars has been triggered by the central bipolar HII region. It occurs in the compressed material of the parental cloud.Comment: 32 pages, 28 figures, to be published in A&

Social efficiency of entry in a vertically related industry

    Get PDF
We provide a new perspective to the literature on social desirability of entry by showing that, if the input supplier has market power, social desirability of entry of the final goods producers depends on returns to scale. Entry in the final goods market can be socially insufficient under constant returns to scale technology, but it can be socially excessive under decreasing returns to scale technologies if the cost of entry is low so that the final goods market is sufficiently competitive. Hence, the anti-competitive entry regulation policies are more justifiable if the final goods market is characterised by decreasing returns to scale technologies

Increasing Dominance - the Role of Advertising, Pricing and Product Design

Despite the empirical relevance of advertising strategies in concentrated markets, the economics literature is largely silent on the effect of persuasive advertising strategies on pricing, market structure and increasing (or decreasing) dominance. In a simple model of persuasive advertising and pricing with differentiated goods, we analyze the interdependencies between ex-ante asymmetries in consumer appeal, advertising and prices. Products with larger initial appeal to consumers will be advertised more heavily but priced at a higher level - that is, advertising and price discounts are strategic substitutes for products with asymmetric initial appeal. We find that the escalating effect of advertising dominates the moderating effect of pricing so that post-competition market shares are more asymmetric than pre-competition differences in consumer appeal. We further find that collusive advertising (but competitive pricing) generates the same market outcomes, and that network effects lead to even more extreme market outcomes, both directly and via the effect on advertising

The community paediatric respiratory infection surveillance study protocol:a feasibility, prospective inception cohort study

    Get PDF
INTRODUCTION: Paediatric respiratory tract infections (RTIs) are common reasons for primary care consultations and antibiotic prescribing. Locally relevant syndromic and microbiological surveillance information has the potential to improve the care of children with RTIs by normalising illness (parents) and reducing uncertainty (clinicians). Currently, most RTI studies are conducted at the point of healthcare service consultation, leaving the community burden, microbiology, symptom duration and proportion consulting largely unknown. This study seeks to establish the feasibility of (mainly online) participant recruitment and retention, and the acceptability/comparability of parent versus nurse-collected microbiological sampling, to inform the design of a future surveillance intervention study. Evidence regarding consultation rates and symptom duration is also sought. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: A community-based, feasibility prospective inception cohort study, recruiting children aged ≥3 months and <16 years and their parents via general practitioner surgery invitation letter, aiming to collect data on 300 incident RTIs by July 2016. Following informed consent, parents provide baseline (demographic) data online, and respond to weekly emails to confirm the absence/presence of new RTI symptoms. Once symptomatic, parents provide daily data online (RTI symptoms, school/day-care attendance, time off work, health service use, medication), and a research nurse visits to collect clinical examination data and microbiological (nasal and saliva) swabs. Parents are invited to provide symptomatic (at nurse visit, but without nurse assistance) and asymptomatic (alone) swabs on recovery. A review of primary care medical notes will gather medical history, health service utilisation, referral and antibiotic prescribing rates. Feasibility will be assessed using recruitment and retention rates, data completeness; and acceptability by quantitative survey and qualitative interviews. Symptomatic parent and nurse swab pairs will be compared for microbe isolation
