    Phase diagram of Landau-Zener phenomena in coupled one-dimensional Bose quantum fluids

    We study stationary and dynamical properties of the many-body Landau-Zener dynamics of a Bose quantum fluid confined in two coupled one-dimensional chains, using a many-body generalization recently reported [Y.-A. Chen et al.], within the decoupling approximation and the one-level band scheme. The energy spectrum evidences the structure of the avoided level crossings as a function of the on-site inter particle interaction strength. On the dynamical side, a phase diagram of the transfer efficiency across ground-state and inverse sweeps is presented. A totally different scenario with respect to the original single-particle Landau-Zener scheme is found for ground-state sweeps, in which a breakdown of the adiabatic region emerges as the sweep rate decreases. On the contrary, the transfer efficiency across inverse sweeps reveals consistent results with the single-particle Landau-Zener predictions. In the strong coupling regime, we find that there is a critical value of the on-site interaction for which the transfer of particles starts to vanish independently of the sweep rate.     Generalized scattering-matrix approach for magneto-optics in periodically patterned multilayer systems

    We present here a generalization of the scattering-matrix approach for the description of the propagation of electromagnetic waves in nanostructured magneto-optical systems. Our formalism allows us to describe all the key magneto-optical effects in any configuration in periodically patterned multilayer structures. The method can also be applied to describe periodic multilayer systems comprising materials with any type of optical anisotropy. We illustrate the method with the analysis of a recent experiment in which the transverse magneto-optical Kerr effect was measured in a Fe film with a periodic array of subwavelength circular holes. We show, in agreement with the experiments, that the excitation of surface plasmon polaritons in this system leads to a resonant enhancement of the transverse magneto-optical Kerr effect.Comment: 12 pages, 6 figures, submitted to Physical Review

    Design of Novel High-Strength Bainitic Steels

    With careful design, mixed microstructures consisting of fine plates of upper bainitic ferrite separated by thin films of stable retained austenite have exhibited impressive combinations of strength and toughness in high-silicon bainitic steels. The silicon suppresses the precipitation of brittle cementite leading to an improvement in toughness. The essential principles governing the optimisation of such microstructures are well established, particularly that large regions of unstable high-carbon retained austenite must be avoided. The aim of the present work was to see how far these concepts can be extended to achieve the highest ever combination of strength and toughness in bulk-samples, consistent with certain hardenability and processing requirements.Peer reviewe

    Scaling up algorithmic debugging with virtual execution trees

    Declarative debugging is a powerful debugging technique that has been adapted to practically all programming languages. However, the technique suffers from important scalability problems in both time and memory. With realistic programs the huge size of the execution tree handled makes the debugging session impractical and too slow to be productive. In this work, we present a new architecture for declarative debuggers in which we adapt the technique to work with incomplete execution trees. This allows us to avoid the problem of loading the whole execution tree in main memory and solve the memory scalability problems. We also provide the technique with the ability to debug execution trees that are only partially generated. This allows the programmer to start the debugging session even before the execution tree is computed. This solves the time scalability problems.     Interactions between nutrition and gastrointestinal infections with parasitic nematodes in goats

    Parasitic nematodes of the digestive tract remain one of the main constraints to goat production both in temperate and tropical countries. The usual mode of control of these gastrointestinal nematodes (GIN) based on the repeated use of anthelmintics is now strongly questioned because of the increasing development of resistance to these molecules. Among the alternative methods to anthelmintics currently available, the manipulation of host nutrition in order to improve the host resistance and/or resilience to parasitic infections seems to represent one of the most promising options to reduce the dependence on conventional chemotherapy and to favour the sustainable control of gastro intestinal nematode infections. This paper will review the available information on the interactions between nutrition and nematode parasitism in dairy or meat goats both in temperate and tropical conditions. It will refer to quantitative aspects of the diet (influence of the protein and/or energy parts) as well as to qualitative components (effects of plant secondary metabolites on worm biology) and will discuss the specificities of goats in regard of theses interactions

    The Gaia Ultra-Cool Dwarf Sample -- II : Structure at the end of the main sequence

    © 2019 The Author(s) Published by Oxford University Press on behalf of the Royal Astronomical Society.We identify and investigate known late M, L, and T dwarfs in the Gaia second data release. This sample is being used as a training set in the Gaia data processing chain of the ultracool dwarfs work package. We find 695 objects in the optical spectral range M8–T6 with accurate Gaia coordinates, proper motions, and parallaxes which we combine with published spectral types and photometry from large area optical and infrared sky surveys. We find that 100 objects are in 47 multiple systems, of which 27 systems are published and 20 are new. These will be useful benchmark systems and we discuss the requirements to produce a complete catalogue of multiple systems with an ultracool dwarf component. We examine the magnitudes in the Gaia passbands and find that the G BP magnitudes are unreliable and should not be used for these objects. We examine progressively redder colour–magnitude diagrams and see a notable increase in the main-sequence scatter and a bivariate main sequence for old and young objects. We provide an absolute magnitude – spectral subtype calibration for G and G RP passbands along with linear fits over the range M8–L8 for other passbands.Peer reviewedFinal Published versio
