Background: Type 2 DM patients usually had poor prognosis for CAD. MPS with SPECT has been extensively used in CAD detection and it’s application among type 2 DM population is still under study with promising result. In the Philippines, there are no current available data regarding this matter. Methodology: This was a cross sectional analytical study of randomly selected Filipino patients without previous cardiac events in whom MPS using Thallium-201 were performed over a 24-month period. Association of myocardial ischemia was compared using logistic regression analysis based on total summed stress score (SSS) values. Results: Total of 208 patients (104 type 2 DM and 104 non-type 2 DM) who underwent stress or pharmacologic MPS using Thallium-201 were included in the study. Majority of the subjects were male. Abnormal 2D echo result and lower EF were significantly present among type 2 DM group (p = 0.044, 0.0005). Hypertension was more prominent among the list of co-morbidities and has significant relationship with type 2 DM group (p = 0.025). The distribution of myocardial ischemia among type 2 DM group with insignificant, mildly abnormal, and moderate to severely abnormal; were 60.6%, 12.5%, and 26.9%, respectively. The presence of having significant CAD (SSS>3) was associated with the type 2 DM group with odds ratio of 2.57 (95% CI: 1.38-4.78, p = 0.003). Conclusion: The current study has shown that Filipino type 2 DM patients without previous cardiac events are likely to have significant and more severe scintigraphic evidence of CAD than their non-type 2 DM counterpart. Recently, analysis of some major blackouts and failures of power system shows that voltage instability problem has been one of the main reasons of these disturbances and networks collapse. In this paper, a systematic approach to voltage stability analysis using various techniques for the IEEE 14-bus case study, is presented. Static analysis is used to analyze the voltage stability of the system under study, whilst the dynamic analysis is used to evaluate the performance of compensators. The static techniques used are Power Flow, V–P curve analysis, and Q–V modal analysis. In this study, Flexible Alternating Current Transmission system (FACTS) devices- namely, Static Synchronous Compensators (STATCOMs) and Static Var Compensators (SVCs) - are used as reactive power compensators, taking into account maintaining the violated voltage magnitudes of the weak buses within the acceptable limits defined in ANSI C84.1. Simulation results validate that both the STATCOMs and the SVCs can be effectively used to enhance the static voltage stability and increasing network loadability margin. Additionally, based on the dynamic analysis results, it has been shown that STATCOMs have superior performance, in dynamic voltage stability enhancement, compared to SVCs

A comparison of electrochemical degradation of phenol on boron doped diamond and lead dioxide anodes

    Get PDF
This work compares two electrode materials used to mineralize phenol contained in waste waters. Two disks covered with either boron doped diamond (BDD) or PbO2 were used as anodes in a one compartment flow cell under the same hydrodynamic conditions. Efficiencies of galvanostatic electrolyses are compared on the basis of measurements of Total Organic Carbon (TOC) and Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD). Galvanostatic electrolyses were monitored by analysis of phenol and of its oxidation derivatives to evaluate the operating time needed for complete elimination of toxic aromatics. The experimental current efficiency is close to the theoretical value for the BDD electrode. Other parameters being equal, phenol species disappeared at the same rate using the two electrode materials but the BDD anode showed better efficiency to eliminate TOC and COD. Moreover, during the electrolysis less intermediates are formed with BDD compared to PbO2 whatever the current density. A comparison of energy consumption is given based on the criterion of 99% removal of aromatic compounds

Signatures of non-locality in the first-order coherence of the scattered light

    Get PDF
The spatial coherence of an atomic wavepacket can be detected in the scattered photons, even when the center-of-mass motion is in the quantum coherent superposition of two distant, non-overlapping wave packets. Spatial coherence manifests itself in the power spectrum of the emitted photons, whose spectral components can exhibit interference fringes as a function of the emission angle. The contrast and the phase of this interference pattern provide information about the quantum state of the center of mass of the scattering atom.Comment: 5 pages, one figure, submitted to Laser Physics, special issue in memory of Herbert Walthe

s-s*-d-wave superconductor on a square lattice and its BCs phase diagram

We study an extended Hubbard model with on-site repulsion and nearest neighbors attraction which tries to mimic some of the experimental features of doped cuprates in the superconducting state. We draw and discuss the phase diagram as a function of the effective interactions among electrons for a wide range of doping concentrations. We locate the region which is relevant for the cuprates setting some constraints on the parameters which may be used in this kind of effective models. We also study the effects of temperature and orthorrombicity on the symmetry and magnitude of the gap function, and map the model onto a simpler linearized hamiltonian, which produces similar phase diagrams.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures included. Dynamics of conversion of supercurrents into normal currents, and vice versa

The generation and destruction of the supercurrent in a superconductor (S) between two resistive normal (N) current leads connected to a current source is computed from the source equation for the supercurrent density. This equation relates the gradient of the pair potential's phase to electron and hole wavepackets that create and destroy Cooper pairs in the N/S interfaces. Total Andreev reflection and supercurrent transmission of electrons and holes are coupled together by the phase rigidity of the non-bosonic Cooper-pair condensate. The calculations are illustrated by snapshots from a computer film.Comment: 8 pages, 1 figure, accepted by Phys. Rev.

Time-separated entangled light pulses from a single-atom emitter

The controlled interaction between a single, trapped, laser-driven atom and the mode of a high-finesse optical cavity allows for the generation of temporally separated, entangled light pulses. Entanglement between the photon-number fluctuations of the pulses is created and mediated via the atomic center-of-mass motion, which is interfaced with light through the mechanical effect of atom-photon interaction. By means of a quantum noise analysis we determine the correlation matrix which characterizes the entanglement, as a function of the system parameters. The scheme is feasible in experimentally accessible parameter regimes. It may be easily extended to the generation of entangled pulses at different frequencies, even at vastly different wavelengths.Comment: 17 pages, 5 figures. Fourth order indirect integration method for black hole perturbations: even modes

On the basis of a recently proposed strategy of finite element integration in time domain for partial differential equations with a singular source term, we present a fourth order algorithm for non-rotating black hole perturbations in the Regge-Wheeler gauge. Herein, we address even perturbations induced by a particle plunging in. The forward time value at the upper node of the (r,t)(r^*,t) grid cell is obtained by an algebraic sum of i) the preceding node values of the same cell, ii) analytic expressions, related to the jump conditions on the wave function and its derivatives, iii) the values of the wave function at adjacent cells. In this approach, the numerical integration does not deal with the source and potential terms directly, for cells crossed by the particle world line. This scheme has also been applied to circular and eccentric orbits and it will be object of a forthcoming publication.Comment: This series of papers deals with EMRI for LISA. With the respect to the v1 version, the algorithm has been improved; convergence tests and references have been added; v2 is composed by 23 pages, and 6 figures. Paper accepted by Class. Electromagnetic signatures of far-field gravitational radiation in the 1+3 approach

    Get PDF
Gravitational waves from astrophysical sources can interact with background electromagnetic fields, giving rise to distinctive and potentially detectable electromagnetic signatures. In this paper, we study such interactions for far-field gravitational radiation using the 1+3 approach to relativity. Linearised equations for the electromagnetic field on perturbed Minkowski space are derived and solved analytically. The inverse Gertsenshtein conversion of gravitational waves in a static electromagnetic field is rederived, and the resultant electromagnetic radiation is shown to be significant for highly magnetised pulsars in compact binary systems. We also obtain a variety of nonlinear interference effects for interacting gravitational and electromagnetic waves, although wave-wave resonances previously described in the literature are absent when the electric-magnetic self-interaction is taken into account. The fluctuation and amplification of electromagnetic energy flux as the gravitational wave strength increases towards the gravitational-electromagnetic frequency ratio is a possible signature of gravitational radiation from extended astrophysical sources.Comment: Published versio
