    Topology by Design in Magnetic nano-Materials: Artificial Spin Ice

    Artificial Spin Ices are two dimensional arrays of magnetic, interacting nano-structures whose geometry can be chosen at will, and whose elementary degrees of freedom can be characterized directly. They were introduced at first to study frustration in a controllable setting, to mimic the behavior of spin ice rare earth pyrochlores, but at more useful temperature and field ranges and with direct characterization, and to provide practical implementation to celebrated, exactly solvable models of statistical mechanics previously devised to gain an understanding of degenerate ensembles with residual entropy. With the evolution of nano--fabrication and of experimental protocols it is now possible to characterize the material in real-time, real-space, and to realize virtually any geometry, for direct control over the collective dynamics. This has recently opened a path toward the deliberate design of novel, exotic states, not found in natural materials, and often characterized by topological properties. Without any pretense of exhaustiveness, we will provide an introduction to the material, the early works, and then, by reporting on more recent results, we will proceed to describe the new direction, which includes the design of desired topological states and their implications to kinetics.Comment: 29 pages, 13 figures, 116 references, Book Chapte

    Genetic characterization of morphologically variant strains of Paracoccidioides brasiliensis

    Molecular characterization of Paracoccidioides brasiliensis variant strains that had been preserved under mineral oil for decades was carried out by random amplified polymorphic DNA analysis (RAPD). On P. brasiliensis variants in the transitional phase and strains with typical morphology, RAPD produced reproducible polymorphic amplification products that differentiated them. A dendrogram based on the generated RAPD patterns placed the 14 P. brasiliensis strains into five groups with similarity coefficients of 72%. A high correlation between the genotypic and phenotypic characteristics of the strains was observed. A 750 bp-RAPD fragment found only in the wild-type phenotype strains was cloned and sequenced. Genetic similarity analysis using BLASTx suggested that this RAPD marker represents a putative domain of a hypothetical flavin-binding monooxygenase (FMO)-like protein of Neurospora crassa.FiocruzBritish Council Progra

    Evaluation of the psychometric properties of the London Measure of Unplanned Pregnancy in Brazilian Portuguese

    Background: Estimates of unplanned pregnancy worldwide are of concern, especially in low and middle-income countries, including Brazil. Although the contraceptive prevalence rate is high in Brazil, almost half of all pregnancies are reported as unintended. The only source of nationally representative data about pregnancy intention is the Demographic and Health Survey, as with many other countries. In more recent years, however, it has been realized that concept of unintended pregnancy is potentially more complex and requires more sophisticated measurement strategies, such as the London Measure of Unplanned Pregnancy (LMUP). The LMUP has been translated and validated in other languages, but not Portuguese yet. In this study, we evaluate the psychometric properties of the LMUP in the Portuguese language, Brazilian version. Methods: A Brazilian Portuguese version of the LMUP was produced via translation and back-translation. After piloting, the mode of administration was changed from self-completion to interviewer-administration. The measure was field tested with pregnant, postpartum, and postabortion women recruited at maternity and primary health care services in Sao Paulo city. Reliability (internal consistency) was assessed using Cronbach’s alpha and item-total correlations. Construct validity was assessed using principal components analysis and hypothesis testing. Scaling was assessed with Mokken analysis. Results: 759 women aged 15–44 completed the Brazilian Portuguese LMUP. There were no missing data. The measure was acceptable and well targeted. Reliability testing demonstrated good internal consistency (alpha = 0.81, all item-rest correlations >0.2). Validity testing confirmed that the measure was unidimensional and that all hypotheses were met: there were lower LMUP median scores among women in the extreme age groups (p<0.001), among non-married women (p<0.001) and those with lower educational attainment (p<0.001). The Loevinger H coefficient was 0.60, indicating a strong scale. Conclusion: The Brazilian Portuguese LMUP is a valid and reliable measure of pregnancy planning/intention that is now available for use in Brazil. It represents a useful addition to the public health research and surveillance toolkit in Brazil

    Acute heat stress and dietary methionine effects on IGF-I, GHR, and UCP mRNA expression in liver and muscle of quails.

    This study evaluated the expression of insulin-like growth factor I (IGF-I), growth hormone receptor (GHR), and uncoupling protein (UCP) mRNA in muscle and liver of quails that were in thermal comfort or exposed to heat stress and that were fed diets with or without methionine supplementation. Meat quails were fed a diet that either met the nutritional demands for methionine (MS) or did not meet this demand (methionine-deficient diet, MD). The animals were either kept at a thermal comfort temperature (25°C) or exposed to heat stress (38°C for 24 h starting on the 6th day). RNA was extracted from liver and breast muscle, and cDNA was synthesized and amplified using quantitative reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction. Animals that were fed the MS diet and remained at the thermal comfort temperature exhibited increased IGF-I mRNA expression in the liver (0.56 AU). The GHR mRNA expression in the liver and muscle was influenced by both the study variables. Animals receiving the MS diet showed higher GHR expression, while increased expression was observed in animals at the thermal comfort temperature. The UCP mRNA expression in the muscle was influenced by both methionine supplementation and heat stress. Higher expression was observed in animals that received the MD diet (2.29 vs 3.77 AU) and in animals kept in thermal comfort. Our results suggest that heat stress negatively affects the expression of growth-related genes and that methionine supplementation is necessary to appropriately maintain the levels of IGF-I, GHR, and UCP transcripts for animal metabolism

    Casos autoctones de esquistossomose mansonica em criancas de Recife, PE

    OBJETIVO : Investigar criadouros com moluscos hospedeiros e casos humanos autóctones para esquistossomose. MÉTODOS : Entre julho de 2010 e setembro de 2012 foram realizados: (1) levantamento malacológico para busca ativa de criadouros, coleta e identificação de caramujos Biomphalaria positivos para Schistosoma mansoni em Recife, PE; (2) inquérito de prevalência com 2.718 escolares, de sete a 14 anos, para diagnóstico de casos de esquistossomose; (3) exame clínico e ultrassonografia nos casos positivos para S. mansoni. Os casos foram investigados quanto à sua autoctonia e avaliados clinicamente. Os casos e criadouros foram georreferenciados e espacializados. RESULTADOS : Foram identificados 30 criadouros de B. straminea , quatro deles potenciais focos de transmissão, uma vez que os testes moleculares identificaram DNA de S. mansoni nos caramujos coletados. Foram diagnosticadas 14 crianças com esquistossomose; entre elas, cinco foram consideradas casos autóctones da doença. CONCLUSÕES : Ações emergenciais pela vigilância em saúde são necessárias para evitar que a esquistossomose se endemize em Recife, como acontece em localidades litorâneas do estado de Pernambuco

    Genetic variation and exercise-induced muscle damage: implications for athletic performance, injury and ageing.

    Prolonged unaccustomed exercise involving muscle lengthening (eccentric) actions can result in ultrastructural muscle disruption, impaired excitation-contraction coupling, inflammation and muscle protein degradation. This process is associated with delayed onset muscle soreness and is referred to as exercise-induced muscle damage. Although a certain amount of muscle damage may be necessary for adaptation to occur, excessive damage or inadequate recovery from exercise-induced muscle damage can increase injury risk, particularly in older individuals, who experience more damage and require longer to recover from muscle damaging exercise than younger adults. Furthermore, it is apparent that inter-individual variation exists in the response to exercise-induced muscle damage, and there is evidence that genetic variability may play a key role. Although this area of research is in its infancy, certain gene variations, or polymorphisms have been associated with exercise-induced muscle damage (i.e. individuals with certain genotypes experience greater muscle damage, and require longer recovery, following strenuous exercise). These polymorphisms include ACTN3 (R577X, rs1815739), TNF (-308 G>A, rs1800629), IL6 (-174 G>C, rs1800795), and IGF2 (ApaI, 17200 G>A, rs680). Knowing how someone is likely to respond to a particular type of exercise could help coaches/practitioners individualise the exercise training of their athletes/patients, thus maximising recovery and adaptation, while reducing overload-associated injury risk. The purpose of this review is to provide a critical analysis of the literature concerning gene polymorphisms associated with exercise-induced muscle damage, both in young and older individuals, and to highlight the potential mechanisms underpinning these associations, thus providing a better understanding of exercise-induced muscle damage

    Speed Partitioning for Indexing Moving Objects

    Indexing moving objects has been extensively studied in the past decades. Moving objects, such as vehicles and mobile device users, usually exhibit some patterns on their velocities, which can be utilized for velocity-based partitioning to improve performance of the indexes. Existing velocity-based partitioning techniques rely on some kinds of heuristics rather than analytically calculate the optimal solution. In this paper, we propose a novel speed partitioning technique based on a formal analysis over speed values of the moving objects. We first show that speed partitioning will significantly reduce the search space expansion which has direct impacts on query performance of the indexes. Next we formulate the optimal speed partitioning problem based on search space expansion analysis and then compute the optimal solution using dynamic programming. We then build the partitioned indexing system where queries are duplicated and processed in each index partition. Extensive experiments demonstrate that our method dramatically improves the performance of indexes for moving objects and outperforms other state-of-the-art velocity-based partitioning approaches

    Revisão da literatura sobre conhecimentos, atitudes e comportamentos dos estudantes do ensino superior sobre o desenvolvimento sustentável

    As Instituições de Ensino Superior (IES) têm um papel a desempenhar na Educação para o Desenvolvimento Sustentável (EDS) uma vez que podem promover a sensibilização, a compreensão e a ação em prol do Desenvolvimento Sustentável (DS) e dos Objetivos do Desenvolvimento Sustentável (ODS). As IES contribuem para provocar mudanças e transformações na sociedade, promovendo políticas, estratégias e métodos que permitam a construção de um mundo mais sustentável. Identificar os conhecimentos a adquirir e as atitudes e os comportamentos a desenvolver, pelos estudantes do Ensino Superior no âmbito do DS, é um desafio que merece ser prosseguido. Os estudantes das IES devem estar conscientes dos ODS e da forma como podem contribuir para a sua prossecução, não só enquanto estudantes, mas também como futuros profissionais e decisores em diferentes áreas (Bello et al., 2020; Leal Filho et al., 2019). O objetivo desta revisão da literatura é identificar os estudos existentes que abordam os conhecimentos, as atitudes e os comportamentos dos estudantes do ensino superior em relação ao DS e/ou aos ODS e sintetizar os seus principais resultados. Vários estudos têm-se centrado em fatores diretamente relacionados com os estudantes do ensino superior, contribuindo para medir os seus conhecimentos, atitudes e comportamentos em relação ao DS: (i) Borges (2019) mostrou que havia conhecimentos e atitudes muito favoráveis em relação ao DS entre estudantes do ensino superior, porém os comportamentos foram menos favoráveis; (ii) Balakrishnan et al. (2020) verificaram que os inquiridos tinham perceções e atitudes positivas em relação a todas as dimensões da sustentabilidade - ambiental, económica e social; (iii) Eagle et al. (2015) revelaram com o seu estudo que os estudantes mostram uma tendência para considerar que as questões fundamentais estão fora do seu controlo pessoal e acreditam que as soluções têm de ser encontradas por outros; (iv) em Al-Naqbi e lshannag (2018) os estudantes demonstraram uma elevada compreensão, atitudes positivas muito fortes e comportamentos moderadamente positivos em relação à EDS e ao ambiente; (v) os resultados de Zamora-Polo et al. (2019) mostram que o conhecimento dos ODS é baixo; foram encontradas diferenças significativas entre as pontuações obtidas nas implicações profissionais e pessoais dos ODS; (vi) segundo Leiva-Brondo et al. (2022) muitos estudantes afirmam estar cientes dos ODS, mas a maioria não tem uma compreensão completa destes 17 objetivos e da sua implementação atual, apesar de acreditarem que os ODS são importantes na sua vida quotidiana; (vii) Afroz e Ilham (2020) mostraram que os inquiridos têm um elevado conhecimento e uma atitude positiva em relação aos ODS. Neste trabalho, após a sistematização das principais conclusões dos estudos selecionados, apresenta-se algumas lacunas existentes na investigação, bem como orientações para estudos futuros.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
