Quark Effects in the Gluon Condensate Contribution to the Scalar Glueball Correlation Function
One-loop quark contributions to the dimension-four gluon condensate term in
the operator product expansion (OPE) of the scalar glueball correlation
function are calculated in the MS-bar scheme in the chiral limit of quark
flavours. The presence of quark effects is shown not to alter the cancellation
of infrared (IR) singularities in the gluon condensate OPE coefficients. The
dimension-four gluonic condensate term represents the leading power corrections
to the scalar glueball correlator and, therein, the one-loop logarithmic
contributions provide the most important condensate contribution to those QCD
sum-rules independent of the low-energy theorem (the subtracted sum-rules).Comment: latex2e, 6 pages, 7 figures embedded in latex fil

Development and testing of spheroidal inorganic sorbents
Objective was to develop sodium titanate (ST) microspheres, made by the HMTA (hexamethylenetetramine) internal gelation process, to remove radionuclides and heavy metals from waste streams at DOE sites. to determine the optimum amount of ST that can be embedded in hydrous Ti oxide (HTO) microspheres, batches of 9.2 to 23.3% ST in HTO were prepared. Crush strength of the air-dried microspheres was found to be highest. Sr was removed from simulated supernatant by all composite microspheres; 13.2% ST/HTO worked best
What influences healthcare professionals' treatment preferences for older women with operable breast cancer?: an application of the discrete choice experiment
Introduction
Primary endocrine therapy (PET) is used variably in the UK as an alternative to surgery for older women with operable breast cancer. Guidelines state that only patients with “significant comorbidity” or “reduced life expectancy” should be treated this way and age should not be a factor.
Methods
A Discrete Choice Experiment (DCE) was used to determine the impact of key variables (patient age, comorbidity, cognition, functional status, cancer stage, cancer biology) on healthcare professionals' (HCP) treatment preferences for operable breast cancer among older women. Multinomial logistic regression was used to identify associations.
Results
40% (258/641) of questionnaires were returned. Five variables (age, co-morbidity, cognition, functional status and cancer size) independently demonstrated a significant association with treatment preference (p < 0.05). Functional status was omitted from the multivariable model due to collinearity, with all other variables correlating with a preference for operative treatment over no preference (p < 0.05). Only co-morbidity, cognition and cancer size correlated with a preference for PET over no preference (p < 0.05).
Conclusion
The majority of respondents selected treatment in accordance with current guidelines, however in some scenarios, opinion was divided, and age did appear to be an independent factor that HCPs considered when making a treatment decision in this population
Electromagnetic Mass Splittings in Heavy Mesons
The electromagnetic contribution to the isomultiplet mass splittings of heavy
mesons is reanalyzed within the framework of the heavy mass expansion.
It is shown that the leading term in the expansion is given to a good
approximation by the elastic term. -corrections can only be estimated,
the main source of uncertainty now being inelastic contributions. The
-corrections to the elastic term turn out to be relatively small in
both D and B pseudoscalar mesons.Comment: 16 pages, report CEBAF-TH-92-26, one figure not included (available

Energy Relaxation in Nonlinear One-Dimensional Lattices
We study energy relaxation in thermalized one-dimensional nonlinear arrays of
the Fermi-Pasta-Ulam type. The ends of the thermalized systems are placed in
contact with a zero-temperature reservoir via damping forces. Harmonic arrays
relax by sequential phonon decay into the cold reservoir, the lower frequency
modes relaxing first. The relaxation pathway for purely anharmonic arrays
involves the degradation of higher-energy nonlinear modes into lower energy
ones. The lowest energy modes are absorbed by the cold reservoir, but a small
amount of energy is persistently left behind in the array in the form of almost
stationary low-frequency localized modes. Arrays with interactions that contain
both a harmonic and an anharmonic contribution exhibit behavior that involves
the interplay of phonon modes and breather modes. At long times relaxation is
extremely slow due to the spontaneous appearance and persistence of energetic
high-frequency stationary breathers. Breather behavior is further ascertained
by explicitly injecting a localized excitation into the thermalized array and
observing the relaxation behavior

Comparison of Microstructures and Mechanical Properties for Solid Cobalt-Base Alloy Components and Biomedical Implant Prototypes Fabricated by Electron Beam Melting
The microstructures and mechanical behavior of simple, as-fabricated, solid
geometries (with a density of 8.4 g/cm3), as-fabricated and fabricated and annealed
femoral (knee) prototypes all produced by additive manufacturing (AM) using electron
beam melting (EBM) of Co-26Cr-6Mo-0.2C powder are examined and compared in this
study. Microstructures and microstructural issues are examined by optical metallography,
SEM, TEM, EDS, and XRD while mechanical properties included selective specimen
tensile testing and Vickers microindentation (HV) and Rockwell C-scale (HRC) hardness
measurements. Orthogonal (X-Y) melt scanning of the electron beam during AM
produced unique, orthogonal and related Cr23C6 carbide (precipitate) cellular arrays with
dimensions of ~2ÎĽm in the build plane perpendicular to the build direction, while
connected carbide columns were formed in the vertical plane, parallel to the build
direction.Mechanical Engineerin
Measuring Parton Densities in the Pomeron
We present a program to measure the parton densities in the pomeron using
diffractive deep inelastic scattering and diffractive photoproduction, and to
test the resulting parton densities by applying them to other processes such as
the diffractive production of jets in hadron-hadron collisions. Since QCD
factorization has been predicted NOT to apply to hard diffractive scattering,
this program of fitting and using parton densities might be expected to fail.
Its success or failure will provide useful information on the space-time
structure of the pomeron.Comment: Contains revisions based on Phys. Rev. D referee comments. RevTeX

Biomarkers of oxidative stress: methods and measures of oxidative DNA damage (COMET assay) and telomere shortening
Oxidative stress is fast becoming the nutritional and medical buzzword for the twenty-first century. The theoretical importance of oxidative stress in diabetes is highlighted by its potential double impact on metabolic dysfunction on one hand and the vascular system on the other hand. The new concept of oxidative stress, being an important trigger in the onset and progression of diabetes and its complications, emphasizes the need for measurement of markers of oxidation to assess the degree of oxidative stress. While we have been routinely measuring biomarkers in our molecular epidemiology projects, here we discuss the utility of two assays, (a) DNA damage assessment by COMET measurement and (b) telomere length measurement. As DNA damage is efficiently repaired by cellular enzymes, its measurement gives a snapshot view of the level of oxidative stress. The protocol allows for measurement of oxidative DNA damage (FPG-sensitive DNA strand breaks). Telomere length measured by Southern blotting technique allows one to estimate the chronic burden of oxidative stress at the molecular level and is now considered as biomarker of biological aging
Quark initiated coherent diffractive production of muon pair and W boson at hadron colliders
The large transverse momentum muon pair and W boson productions in the quark
initiated coherent diffractive processes at hadron colliders are discussed
under the framework of the two-gluon exchange parametrization of the Pomeron
model. In this approach, the production cross sections are related to the
small-x off-diagonal gluon distribution and the large-x quark distribution in
the proton (antiproton). By approximating the off-diagonal gluon distribution
by the usual gluon distribution function, we estimate the production rates of
these processes at the Fermilab Tevatron.Comment: 11pages, 6 PS figures, to appear in PR
