    Tawney and the third way

    Get PDF
From the 1920s to the 1950s R. H. Tawney was the most influential socialist thinker in Britain. He articulated an ethical socialism at odds with powerful statist and mechanistic traditions in British socialist thinking. Tawney's work is thus an important antecedent to third way thinking. Tawney's religiously-based critique of the morality of capitalism was combined with a concern for detailed institutional reform, challenging simple dichotomies between public and private ownership. He began a debate about democratizing the enterprise and corporate governance though his efforts fell on stony ground. Conversely, Tawney's moralism informed a whole-hearted condemnation of market forces in tension with both his concern with institutional reform and modern third way thought. Unfortunately, he refused to engage seriously with emergent welfare economics which for many social democrats promised a more nuanced understanding of the limits of market forces. Tawney's legacy is a complex one, whose various elements form a vital part of the intellectual background to current third way thinking

INTRODUCTION: Epidemiological surveillance activities undertaken after the detection of an active trachoma case in the APAE-SP are described. MATERIAL AND METHOD: A total of 1,009 pupils, employees and household contacts had an eye examination. Treatment control was carried out at the institution 4 times at 45 day-intervals. RESULTS: The overall prevalence was of 5.9%, 5.1% being of follicular trachoma (TF), 0.3% of intense trachoma (TF/TI) and 0.5% of cicatricial trachoma (TS). At the first control exercise 45.5% of the trachoma cases had no signs of the disease and 40.0% underwent treatment. At the last control exercise 20% were found to have been cured with no vestigial scars. Non-attendance was of 38.2%. The distribution of secondary cases showed great dispersion, suggesting dissemination throughout Greater S. Paulo . DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSIONS: The trachoma control activities do not show satisfactory results, perhaps due to the prolonged duration of the treatment and follow up. The development of strategies of clinical intervention should be implemented for better control of the disease.OBJETIVO: Verificar as condições de vigilância epidemiológica do tracoma desencadeadas a partir da detecção de um caso de tracoma inflamatório na APAE - SP. This study analyzed the case of a local cooperative in the Philippines engaged in agro-enterprise development (AED). It aimed to gather microlevel insight on AED’s contribution to inclusive development, in the context of inclusive agri-business. The researchers profiled the AED initiatives of the Nueva Segovia Consortium of Cooperatives (NSCC), determined the challenges in implementing these initiatives, and analyzed the perceived impacts of the initiatives on the beneficiaries in relation to inclusive development. Data were gathered through key informant interview, focus group discussion, and review of project documents. Based on NSCC’s experience, key informants perceive that the AED initiatives have led to material, cognitive, perceptual, and relational change in its beneficiaries. These resulted from continuous capacity building and directly linking farmers to modern value chains through agro-enterprise development. The changes contribute to empowering the member farmers thereby promoting inclusive development at the local level. The key challenges faced by NSCC are related to production and the policy and institutional landscape for agro-enterprise development. Addressing these challenges, as well as capacitating the agro-enterprises to implement post-production value-adding activities, can maximize the gains towards inclusive development. In-depth studies on the impacts of agro-enterprises on beneficiaries are recommended to further substantiate the potential of agro-enterprise development to promote inclusiveness

A simple UV-spectrophotometric method was developed and validated for the analysis and dissolution studies of sitagliptin phosphate in tablets. Specificity test indicated an adequate UV detection at 267 nm. The method was validated regarding Specificity/accuracy/precision (RSD < 2 %), linearity (r2 = 0.9999), and partial robustness. Tablets uniformity was 102.52 % (RSD = 2.54 %). The method was applied for the determination of the drug in commercial tablet preparations and proved to be reliable for quantification It was also used for the comparison of dissolution profiles of sitagliptin tablets. After dissolution tests comparing eight different conditions through dissolution efficiency (DE), the chosen condition for posterior tests was USP apparatus 1 (basket) in 0.01M HCl pH 3.0, at a stirring rate of 50 rpm. The methodology was applied to two batches of sitagliptin phosphate tablets, giving similar dissolution profiles compared by the difference and similarity factor, obtaining values within the specified limits.Colegio de Farmacéuticos de la Provincia de Buenos Aire

The isolation and identification of bioactive metabolites from complex extracts obtained from microbial growth media is a time consuming, costly, and labor-intensive task. A strategy to rapidly identify secondary metabolites isolated from extracts obtained from the culture media of marine-derived and endophytic fungal strains is described. Identification was achieved by HPLC-UV-MS and 1H NMR analyses in combination with data obtained from the Dictionary of Natural Products. Among the compounds identified, (-)-naphthoquinoneimine, citreorosein, emodin, pyrenocine A and harzianopyridone displayed moderate to potent antiviral activity. (-)-Naphthoquinoneimine was isolated as the enantiomer of its previously reported dextrorotatory congener, while 6,7-dihydroxy-2,2-dimethyl-4-chromanone is herein reported for the first time as a natural product396720731CONSELHO NACIONAL DE DESENVOLVIMENTO CIENTÍFICO E TECNOLÓGICO - CNPQFUNDAÇÃO DE AMPARO À PESQUISA DO ESTADO DE SÃO PAULO - FAPESPBEX 4498-14-32010/50190-2; 2013/50228-8; 2011/08064-2; 2008/00331-9; 2013/23153-
