The Mass Function of Newly Formed Stars (Review)
The topic of the stellar "original mass function" has a nearly 50 year
history,dating to the publication in 1955 of Salpeter's seminal paper. In this
review I discuss the many more recent results that have emerged on the initial
mass function (IMF), as it is now called, from studies over the last decade of

Laimaphelenchus suberensis sp. nov. associated with Quercus suber in Portugal
Laimaphelenchus suberensis sp. nov. obtained
from declining Quercus suber trees of Herdade da
Gouveia de Baixo, Alentejo, Portugal, is described and
illustrated based on morphological, biometrical and molecular
characters. The diagnosis of Laimaphelenchus
species has been commonly based on the presence or
absence of a vulval flap and on the shape structure of the
tail tip. The species described here has been included in
the Laimaphelenchus group without vulval flap, and can
be distinguished from morphologically similar species
by its tail tip shape structure that has a stalk-like terminus
and three diffuse tubercles with 4–6 finger-like
protrusions. For the molecular analyses, the mitochondrial
DNA region from the cytochrome oxidase subunit
I (mtCOI), the D2-D3 expansion segments of the large
subunit (LSU) and small subunit (SSU) of rRNA gene
were amplified and sequenced. Sequences of
L. suberensis sp. nov. clustered separately from all
Laimaphelenchus spp. with available sequences in
Genbank, confirming its identification as a new species.
This is the second report of the genus Laimaphelenchus
in Portugal, associated with Q. suber: L. heidelbergi and
L. suberensis sp. nov.This research was supported by CFE,

Thinking about Later Life: Insights from the Capability Approach
A major criticism of mainstream gerontological frameworks is the inability of such frameworks to appreciate and incorporate issues of diversity and difference in engaging with experiences of aging. Given the prevailing socially structured nature of inequalities, such differences matter greatly in shaping experiences, as well as social constructions, of aging. I argue that Amartya Sen’s capability approach (2009) potentially offers gerontological scholars a broad conceptual framework that places at its core consideration of human beings (their values) and centrality of human diversity. As well as identifying these key features of the capability approach, I discuss and demonstrate their relevance to thinking about old age and aging. I maintain that in the context of complex and emerging identities in later life that shape and are shaped by shifting people-place and people-people relationships, Sen’s capability approach offers significant possibilities for gerontological research

A study of 54 cases of left displacement of the abomasum: February to July 2005
Fifty-four cows with left displacement of the abomasum (LDA) submitted to the hospital facility at Riverview Veterinary Clinic from February to July 2005 were treated by right flank laparotomy and omentopexy. Five cows died (a survival rate 90.7%) and one cow (1.8%) was culled due to recurrence of the LDA post-operatively. Forty-one cows (76%) returned to good production post-operatively. Thirty-nine cows (72%) were pregnant six months after corrective surgery
Multi-Way Multi-Group Segregation and Diversity Indices
Background: How can we compute a segregation or diversity index from a three-way or multi-way contingency table, where each variable can take on an arbitrary finite number of values and where the index takes values between zero and one? Previous methods only exist for two-way contingency tables or dichotomous variables. A prototypical three-way case is the segregation index of a set of industries or departments given multiple explanatory variables of both sex and race. This can be further extended to other variables, such as disability, number of years of education, and former military service. Methodology/Principal Findings: We extend existing segregation indices based on Euclidean distance (square of coefficient of variation) and Boltzmann/Shannon/Theil index from two-way to multi-way contingency tables by including multiple summations. We provide several biological applications, such as indices for age polyethism and linkage disequilibrium. We also provide a new heuristic conceptualization of entropy-based indices. Higher order association measures are often independent of lower order ones, hence an overall segregation or diversity index should be the arithmetic mean of the normalized association measures at all orders. These methods are applicable when individuals selfidentify as multiple races or even multiple sexes and when individuals work part-time in multiple industries. The stellar and sub-stellar IMF of simple and composite populations
The current knowledge on the stellar IMF is documented. It appears to become
top-heavy when the star-formation rate density surpasses about 0.1Msun/(yr
pc^3) on a pc scale and it may become increasingly bottom-heavy with increasing
metallicity and in increasingly massive early-type galaxies. It declines quite
steeply below about 0.07Msun with brown dwarfs (BDs) and very low mass stars
having their own IMF. The most massive star of mass mmax formed in an embedded
cluster with stellar mass Mecl correlates strongly with Mecl being a result of
gravitation-driven but resource-limited growth and fragmentation induced
starvation. There is no convincing evidence whatsoever that massive stars do
form in isolation. Various methods of discretising a stellar population are
introduced: optimal sampling leads to a mass distribution that perfectly
represents the exact form of the desired IMF and the mmax-to-Mecl relation,
while random sampling results in statistical variations of the shape of the
IMF. The observed mmax-to-Mecl correlation and the small spread of IMF
power-law indices together suggest that optimally sampling the IMF may be the
more realistic description of star formation than random sampling from a
universal IMF with a constant upper mass limit. Composite populations on galaxy
scales, which are formed from many pc scale star formation events, need to be
described by the integrated galactic IMF. This IGIMF varies systematically from
top-light to top-heavy in dependence of galaxy type and star formation rate,

Cluster Lenses
Clusters of galaxies are the most recently assembled, massive, bound
structures in the Universe. As predicted by General Relativity, given their
masses, clusters strongly deform space-time in their vicinity. Clusters act as
some of the most powerful gravitational lenses in the Universe. Light rays
traversing through clusters from distant sources are hence deflected, and the
resulting images of these distant objects therefore appear distorted and
magnified. Lensing by clusters occurs in two regimes, each with unique
observational signatures. The strong lensing regime is characterized by effects
readily seen by eye, namely, the production of giant arcs, multiple-images, and
arclets. The weak lensing regime is characterized by small deformations in the
shapes of background galaxies only detectable statistically. Cluster lenses
have been exploited successfully to address several important current questions
in cosmology: (i) the study of the lens(es) - understanding cluster mass
distributions and issues pertaining to cluster formation and evolution, as well
as constraining the nature of dark matter; (ii) the study of the lensed objects
- probing the properties of the background lensed galaxy population - which is
statistically at higher redshifts and of lower intrinsic luminosity thus
enabling the probing of galaxy formation at the earliest times right up to the
Dark Ages; and (iii) the study of the geometry of the Universe - as the
strength of lensing depends on the ratios of angular diameter distances between
the lens, source and observer, lens deflections are sensitive to the value of
cosmological parameters and offer a powerful geometric tool to probe Dark
Energy. In this review, we present the basics of cluster lensing and provide a

Changes in agonist neural drive, hypertrophy and pre-training strength all contribute to the individual strength gains after resistance training.
PURPOSE:
Whilst neural and morphological adaptations following resistance training (RT) have been investigated extensively at a group level, relatively little is known about the contribution of specific physiological mechanisms, or pre-training strength, to the individual changes in strength following training. This study investigated the contribution of multiple underpinning neural [agonist EMG (QEMGMVT), antagonist EMG (HEMGANTAG)] and morphological variables [total quadriceps volume (QUADSVOL), and muscle fascicle pennation angle (QUADSθ p)], as well as pre-training strength, to the individual changes in strength after 12 weeks of knee extensor RT.
METHODS:
Twenty-eight healthy young men completed 12 weeks of isometric knee extensor RT (3/week). Isometric maximum voluntary torque (MVT) was assessed pre- and post-RT, as were simultaneous neural drive to the agonist (QEMGMVT) and antagonist (HEMGANTAG). In addition QUADSVOL was determined with MRI and QUADSθ p with B-mode ultrasound.
RESULTS:
Percentage changes (∆) in MVT were correlated to ∆QEMGMVT (r = 0.576, P = 0.001), ∆QUADSVOL (r = 0.461, P = 0.014), and pre-training MVT (r = -0.429, P = 0.023), but not ∆HEMGANTAG (r = 0.298, P = 0.123) or ∆QUADSθ p (r = -0.207, P = 0.291). Multiple regression analysis revealed 59.9% of the total variance in ∆MVT after RT to be explained by ∆QEMGMVT (30.6%), ∆QUADSVOL (18.7%), and pre-training MVT (10.6%).
CONCLUSIONS:
Changes in agonist neural drive, quadriceps muscle volume and pre-training strength combined to explain the majority of the variance in strength changes after knee extensor RT (~60%) and adaptations in agonist neural drive were the most important single predictor during this short-term intervention
Analysis of SNP-SNP interactions and bone quantitative ultrasound parameter in early adulthood
Background: Osteoporosis individual susceptibility is determined by the interaction of multiple genetic variants
and environmental factors. The aim of this study was to conduct SNP-SNP interaction analyses in candidate genes
influencing heel quantitative ultrasound (QUS) parameter in early adulthood to identify novel insights into the
mechanism of disease.
Methods: The study population included 575 healthy subjects (mean age 20.41; SD 2.36). To assess bone mass QUS
was performed to determine Broadband ultrasound attenuation (BUA, dB/MHz). A total of 32 SNPs mapping to loci
that have been characterized as genetic markers for QUS and/or BMD parameters were selected as genetic markers
in this study. The association of all possible SNP pairs with QUS was assessed by linear regression and a SNP-SNP
interaction was defined as a significant departure from additive effects.
Results: The pairwise SNP-SNP analysis showed multiple interactions. The interaction comprising SNPs rs9340799
and rs3736228 that map in the ESR1 and LRP5 genes respectively, revealed the lowest p value after adjusting for
confounding factors (p-value = 0.001, β (95% CI) = 14.289 (5.548, 23.029). In addition, our model reported others
such as TMEM135-WNT16 (p = 0.007, β(95%CI) = 9.101 (2.498, 15.704), ESR1-DKK1 (p = 0.012, β(95%CI) = 13.641 (2.
959, 24.322) or OPG-LRP5 (p = 0.012, β(95%CI) = 8.724 (1.936, 15.512). However, none of the detected interactions
remain significant considering the Bonferroni significance threshold for multiple testing (p<0.0001).
Conclusion: Our analysis of SNP-SNP interaction in candidate genes of QUS in Caucasian young adults reveal several
interactions, especially between ESR1 and LRP5 genes, that did not reach statistical significance. Although our results do
not support a relevant genetic contribution of SNP-SNP epistatic interactions to QUS in young adults, further studies in
larger independent populations would be necessary to support these preliminary findings.This study was supported by a grant PI-0414-2014 from Consejería de Salud
