characterization and antimicrobial resistance analysis of avian pathogenic escherichia coli isolated from italian turkey flocks
ABSTRACT This study investigated the occurrence of avian pathogenic Escherichia coli (APEC) in a finishing turkey commercial farm, carrying out longitudinal surveys involving 3 consecutive flocks. The diversity and the distribution of the E. coli strains detected during colisepticemia outbreaks were examined. The strains were isolated, serogrouped, assessed for the presence of virulence-associated genes, typed by random amplification of polymorphic DNA (RAPD), and antimicrobial resistance analysis was then carried out. Escherichia coli O78 and O2 were predominantly found. Moreover, based on the somatic antigens used in the study, strains were recovered that were nontypeable. On one occasion, an E. coli O111 strain was found in turkeys. The E. coli isolates differed in terms of antibiotic resistance and RAPD profile. All strains possessed the virulence genes that enabled them to be considered APEC. Strains not only differed between flocks, but also within the same flock. These findings point out the importance of addressing colibacillosis therapy on the basis of a sensitivity test

Oneiric stress and safety and security at work: the discovery of a new universal symbol
Cox and Griffiths define as psychosocial risks at work “those aspects of the
planning, organization and management of work, which, along with their
environmental and social contexts, may affect mental and physical health of the
employees, directly or indirectly producing stress”. Therefore, a more effective
approach to occupational safety and security should include integrated risk
management through the identification of any work stress related problem. The
purpose of this paper is to analyze the possible correlation of risk at work with
the modification of sleep, and inside it, the specific function of dream activity
Postharvest Ozone Fumigation of Grapes (cv Sangiovese) Differently Affects Volatile Organic Compounds and Polyphenol Profiles of Berries and Wine
Consumers are more and more oriented towards the purchase of safer food and beverages, which is pushing the wine sector to find alternatives to the use of sulfur dioxide. Ozone (O3) is already applied in the wine industry to produce sulfur dioxide-free wines through the patented method Purovino®. The aim of this two-year study was that of evaluating whether the postharvest treatment of grapes with ozone affects volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and polyphenol profile in berries, and in turn, wine composition. Grape bunches (Vitis vinifera L.) of cv Sangiovese were fumigated overnight with gaseous ozone (max 20 g·h−1 with 6% w.w−1 of ozone) in a cold room at 4°C (±0.5). After treatment, grapes were processed into wine. In grapes, ozone treatments increased total polyphenol and flavonoid content and upregulated specific genes (phenylalanine ammonia lyase, VvPAL, flavanol synthase 1, and VvFLS1) involved in polyphenol biosynthesis. Wine obtained from ozone-treated grapes had higher flavanol content than the control. Fumigation only slightly affected the different VOC classes of grapes and wine, including aroma compounds derived from the lipoxygenase (LOX) pathway. Although a season-dependent effect was observed, results showed that postharvest ozone treatments applied to avoid the use of sulfur dioxide introduced limited but, in general, positive modifications to grape and wine composition. This information provides assurance to winemakers that the maintenance of wine quality and typicity will be guaranteed when using ozone treatments
5-10 GeV Neutrinos from Gamma-Ray Burst Fireballs
A gamma-ray burst fireball is likely to contain an admixture of neutrons, in
addition to protons, in essentially all progenitor scenarios. Inelastic
collisions between differentially streaming protons and neutrons in the
fireball produce muon neutrinos (antineutrinos) of ~ 10 GeV as well as electron
neutrinos (antineutrinos) of ~ 5 GeV, which could produce ~ 7 events/year in
kilometer cube detectors, if the neutron abundance is comparable to that of
protons. Photons of ~ 10 GeV from pi-zero decay and ~ 100 MeV electron
antineutrinos from neutron decay are also produced, but will be difficult to
detect. Photons with energies < 1 MeV from shocks following neutron decay
produce a characteristic signal which may be distinguishable from the
proton-related MeV photons.Comment: 4 pages, latex, 1 figure, aps style files. Final version, accepted in

Genome sequence analysis of a distinctive Italian infectious bursal disease virus.
ABSTRACT In a recent study, an emerging infectious bursal disease virus (IBDV) genotype (ITA) was detected in IBDV-live vaccinated broilers without clinical signs of infectious bursal disease (IBD). VP2 sequence analysis showed that strains of the ITA genotype clustered separately from vaccine strains and from other IBDV reference strains, either classic or very virulent. In order to obtain a more exhaustive molecular characterization of the IBDV ITA genotype and speculate on its origin, genome sequencing of the field isolate IBDV/Italy/1829/2011, previously assigned to the ITA genotype, was performed, and the sequences obtained were compared to the currently available corresponding sequences. In addition, phylogenetic and recombination analyses were performed. Interestingly, multiple amino acid (AA) sequence alignments revealed that the IBDV/Italy/1829/2011 strain shared several AA residues with very virulent IBDV strains as well as some virulence markers, especially in the VP1 protein. Nevertheless, sequence analysis demonstrated the presence of several residues typical of IBDV strains at a low degree of virulence in the IBDV/Italy/1829/2011 strain. Although homologous recombination and reassortant phenomena may occur naturally among different IBDV strains, no evidence of those events was found in the genome of the IBDV/Italy/1829/2011 strain, which was confirmed to be a genetically distinctive IBDV genotype
Recycling of multilayer packaging waste with switchable anionic surfactants
Switchable Anionic Surfactants (SAS) were used for delaminating flexible packaging waste composed of various plastic layers and aluminium, thereby promoting the recycling of such waste streams from a circular economy perspective. The delamination protocol was optimized on de-pulped food and beverage cartons containing low-density polyethylene (LDPE) and aluminium, varying the carboxylic acid and its counterion constituting the SAS (C8[sbnd]C18 carboxylic acids as the anionic part; inorganic bases and primary, secondary and tertiary amines as the cationic one) their molar ratio (carboxylic acid: base molar ratio from 1:1 to 1:3), SAS concentration (0.15, 0.3 and 0.5 wt%), time (0.5–3 h) and material weight in input (1–10 wt%). High-quality LDPE and aluminium were separated and recovered by using a diluted solution of a surfactant based on lauric acid and triethanolamine (C12-TEA), with performances not achievable with other anionic or cationic surfactants available on the market. The C12-TEA solution was then applied to a large variety of multilayer waste materials composed of polypropylene and aluminium, polyolefins/polyethylene terephthalate/aluminium, giving a material separation dependant on the structure and composition of the material in input. At the end of the process, lauric acid was recovered from the aqueous solution used for washing the separated materials by tuning its water solubility with CO2
Nucleosynthesis Calculations for the Ejecta of Neutron Star Coalescences
We present the results of fully dynamical r-process network calculations for
the ejecta of neutron star mergers (NSMs). The late stages of the inspiral and
the final violent coalescence of a neutron star binary have been calculated in
detail using a 3D hydrodynamics code (Newtonian gravity plus backreaction
forces emerging from the emission of gravitational waves) and a realistic
nuclear equation of state. The found trajectories for the ejecta serve as input
for dynamical r-process calculations where all relevant nuclear reactions
(including beta-decays depositing nuclear energy in the expanding material) are
followed. We find that all the ejected material undergoes r-process. For an
initial Ye close to 0.1 the abundance distributions reproduce very accurately
the solar r-process pattern for nuclei with A above 130. For lighter nuclei
strongly underabundant (as compared to solar) distributions are encountered. We
show that this behaviour is consistent with the latest observations of very
old, metal-poor stars, despite simplistic arguments that have recently been
raised against the possibility of NSM as possible sources of Galactic r-process
material.Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures, proceedings of Nuclei in the Cosmos 2000, to be
