Nonlinear Boundary Value Problems via Minimization on Orlicz-Sobolev Spaces
We develop arguments on convexity and minimization of energy functionals on
Orlicz-Sobolev spaces to investigate existence of solution to the equation
\displaystyle -\mbox{div} (\phi(|\nabla u|) \nabla u) = f(x,u) + h \mbox{in}
\Omega under Dirichlet boundary conditions, where
is a bounded smooth domain, is a
suitable continuous function and
satisfies the Carath\'eodory conditions, while is a measure.Comment: 14 page
Regional subsidies and industrial prospects of lagging regions
Large and sustained differences in economic performance across regions of developing countries have long provided motivation for fiscal incentives designed to encourage firm entry in lagging areas. But empirical evidence in support of these policies has been weak at best. The authors undertake a direct evaluation of the most prominent fiscal incentive policy in Brazil, the Fundos Constitucionais de Financiamento (Constitutional Funds). In doing so, they exploit valuable features of the Brazilian Ministry of Labor's RAIS data set to address two important elements of firm location decisions that have the potential to bias an assessment of the funds: (1) firm"family structure"(in particular, proximity to headquarters for vertically integrated firms), and (2) unobserved spatial heterogeneity (with the potential to confound the effects of the funds). The authors find that the pull of firm headquarters is very strong relative to the constitutional funds for verticallyintegrated firms, but that, with nonparametric controls for time invariant spatial heterogeneity, the funds provide significant incentives for firms in many of the targeted industries.Economic Theory&Research,Scientific Research&Science Parks,Science Education,Technology Industry,Private Participation in Infrastructure
Gluon saturation and Feynman scaling in leading neutron production
In this paper we extend the color dipole formalism to the study of leading
neutron production in collisions at high energies
and estimate the related observables, which were measured at HERA and may be
analysed in future electron-proton () colliders. In particular, we
calculate the Feynman distribution of leading neutrons, which is
expressed in terms of the pion flux and the photon-pion total cross section. In
the color dipole formalism, the photon-pion cross section is described in terms
of the dipole-pion scattering amplitude, which contains information about the
QCD dynamics at high energies and gluon saturation effects. We consider
different models for the scattering amplitude, which have been used to describe
the inclusive and diffractive HERA data. Moreover, the model dependence of
our predictions with the description of the pion flux is analysed in detail. We
show that the recently released H1 leading neutron spectra can be reproduced
using the color dipole formalism and that these spectra could help us to
observe more clearly gluon saturation effects in future colliders.Comment: 10 pages, 5 figure
Dynamic nonlinear analyses for the 4-storey infilled R/C frame: study of a retrofitting solution
A research project on assessment and retrofitting of R/C frame structures is currently being developed under the research programme of the ICONS TMR-research network. This paper presents and discusses the preliminary experimental results from a 4-storey bare frame representative of the common practice of 40~50 years ago in most south European countries and devotes special attention to the study of a retrofitting solution based on bracing and rubber dissipaters, which intends to increase stiffness and damping reducing consequently the earthquake deformation demands.O estudo aqui apresentado concentra-se numa solução de reforço de um pórtico utilizando contraventamentos (k-bracing) com perfis de aço em conjunto com elementos elastoméricos de dissipação.
