The National Radioactivity Monitoring Program for the Regions of Uranium Mines and Uranium Legacy Sites in Portugal
AbstractFollowing closure of the uranium mining company, the areas of former radium and uranium mines were assessed for environmental radioactivity, stable metals and public health impact. Concentrations of radionuclideswere found highly enhanced in milling tailings, in mine drainage, and in some surface water streams.An environmental remediation plan was advisedand it is ongoing. Furthermore,field surveys are annually carried out and results reported to the Government, the European Union, and made available to the public. This monitoring program enabled assessing the radiological risk, and every year contributes to substantial improvement of radiological safety of population and environment
Real-time tourists counting and tracking system for management of nature trails in naturtejo global geopark (Portugal)
This paper presents a counting system project for the Naturtejo Global Geopark, which is structured in two phases. The objective of the first phase was to develop, install and test an electronic system able to remotely count the number of visitors on the Naturtejo Geopark walking routes and touristic sites. The data is reported through a web interface. A Pilot test is currently installed on Trail PR3 – “Fossil’s Route”, near the village of Penha Garcia. Since May 2015, more than 6000 tourists where monitored. The second phase of the project aims to track tourists based on the detection of Wi-Fi signals generated by their smartphones. Thanks to data mining algorithms, useful insights can be extracted that helps to understand the behaviour of tourists when they travel around the large territory of the Geopark.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
A viewpoint on the use of microalgae as an alternative feedstuff in the context of pig and poultry feeding - a special emphasis on tropical regions
With the current increase in meat and animal products consumption, there is a need to make production systems more sustainable. The use of microalgae in monogastric feeds, replacing widely used conventional feedstuffs such corn and soybean, can be a solution to overcome this problem. Several studies have shown promising results in the use of microalgae in feeding of both pigs and poultry. However, there are several important constraints associated to the production of microalgae. Such constraints are particularly limiting in the context of tropical regions. Research and scientific development on microalgae production systems are thus essential so that may be widely used in monogastric feeding. Assessment of an exhaust thermoelectric generator incorporating thermal control applied to a heavy duty vehicle
The road transport industry faces the need to develop its fleet for lower energy consumption, pollutants and CO2 emissions. Waste heat recovery systems with Thermoelectric Generators (TEGs) can directly convert the exhaust heat into electric energy, aiding the electrical needs of the vehicle, thus reducing its dependency on fuel energy. The present work assesses the optimisation and evaluation of a temperature-controlled thermoelectric generator (TCTG) concept to be used in a commercial heavy-duty vehicle (HDV). The system consists of a heat exchanger with wavy fins (WFs) embedded in an aluminium matrix along with vapour chambers (VCs), machined directly into the matrix, that grant the thermal control based on the spreading of local excess heat by phase change, as proposed by the authors in previous publications and patents. The TCTG concept behaviour was analysed under realistic driving conditions. An HDV with a 16 L Diesel engine was simulated in AVL Cruise to obtain the exhaust gas temperature and mass flow rate for each point of two cycle runs. A model proposed in previous publications was adapted to the new fin geometry and vapour chamber configuration and used the AVL Cruise data as input. It was possible to predict the thermal and thermoelectric performance of the TCTG along the corresponding driving cycles. The developed system proved to have a good capacity for applications with highly variable thermal loads since it was able to uncouple the maximisation of heat absorption from the regulation of the thermal level at the hot face of the TEG modules, avoiding both thermal dilution and overheating. This was achieved by the controlled phase change temperature of the heat spreader, that would ensure the spreading of the excess heat from overheated to underheated areas of the generator instead of wasting excess heat. A maximum average electrical production of 2.4 kW was predicted, which resulted in fuel savings of about 2% and CO2 emissions reduction of around 37 g/km.This article was partially supported by projects COOLSPOT PTDC/EME-TED/7801/2020,

Complex fluid flow in microchannels and heat pipes with enhanced surfaces for advanced heat conversion and recovery systems
This paper addresses a multiscale approach for heat recovery systems, used in two distinct applications. In both applications, a microscale approach is used (microchannel heat sinks and heat pipes) for macroscale applications (cooling of a photovoltaic—PV cell), and the thermal energy of exhaust gases of an internal combustion engine is used for thermoelectric generators with variable conductance heat pipes. Several experimental techniques are combined such as visualization, thermography with high spatial and temporal resolution, and the characterization of the flow hydrodynamics, such as the friction losses. The analysis performed evidences the relevance of looking at the physics of the observed phenomena to optimize the heat sink geometry. For instance, the results based on the dissipated heat flux and the convective heat transfer coefficients obtained in the tests of the microchannel-based heat sinks for cooling applications in PV cells show an improvement in the dissipated power at the expense of controlled pumping power, for the best performing geometries. Simple geometries based on these results were then used as inputs in a genetic algorithm to produce the optimized geometries. In both applications, the analysis performed evidences the potential of using two-phase flows. However, instabilities at the microscale must be accurately addressed to take advantage of liquid phase change. In this context, the use of enhanced interfaces may significantly contribute to the resolution of the instability issues as they are able to control bubble dynamics. Aproveitamento de um fosfato natural parcialmente solubilizado pela cultura da cana-de-açúcar: I. Cana-planta
The relative efficiency of a partially acidulated and granulated rock phosphate, FAPS, containing 26% total P2O5, 10% citric acid soluble P2O5, 13% ammonium citrate soluble P2O5, 27% total CaO and 7% total S, was compared with that of both simple superphosphate (SS) and ground rock phosphate (FA). The experiment with the sugar cane variety NA 56-79 was set in a red yellow latosol, pH 5.1-5.5, low in P (4 ppm), and with and average available sulphur content (5 ppm as sul fate). The main conclusions were as follows: a) FAPS gave the same yield results provided by SS when used at the same rates based on total P2O5 content; b) sucrose content in the juice was increased by the highest level (16a kg P2O5 of application of FAPS; c) leaf analyses data suggest that FAPS has incre ased yield by supplying both P2O5 and S to the sugar-cane crop.Em um latossolo, com teor de P disponível entre baixo e médio foi instalado um ensaio destinado a comparar a eficiência de um fosfato natural parcialmente acidulado (FAPS) com a do super simples (SS) e a do fosfato de Araxá (FA) original, na cultura da cana-de-açúcar (cana-planta). Os dados obtidos mostraram que: (1) o FAPS deu uma produção que não diferiu estatisticamente da obtida com o SS, sendo superior ao FA como fonte de P2O5; (2) os dados de diagnose foliar sugerem que o FAPS e o SS funcionam como fonte de P e de S; (3) o teor de açúcares redutores no caldo aumentou em consequência da adubação fosfatada; (4) o FAPS, na dose mais alta, elevou o teor de sacarose do caldo
Single Nucleotide Variants And Indels Identified From Whole-genome Re-sequencing Of Guzerat, Gyr, Girolando And Holstein Cattle Breeds
Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico (CNPq)Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior (CAPES)Whole-genome re-sequencing, alignment and annotation analyses were undertaken for 12 sires representing four important cattle breeds in Brazil: Guzerat (multi-purpose), Gyr, Girolando and Holstein (dairy production). A total of approximately 4.3 billion reads from an Illumina HiSeq 2000 sequencer generated for each animal 10.7 to 16.4-fold genome coverage. A total of 27,441,279 single nucleotide variations (SNVs) and 3,828,041 insertions/deletions (InDels) were detected in the samples, of which 2,557,670 SNVs and 883,219 InDels were novel. The submission of these genetic variants to the dbSNP database significantly increased the number of known variants, particularly for the indicine genome. The concordance rate between genotypes obtained using the Bovine HD BeadChip array and the same variants identified by sequencing was about 99.05%. The annotation of variants identified numerous non-synonymous SNVs and frameshift InDels which could affect phenotypic variation. Functional enrichment analysis was performed and revealed that variants in the olfactory transduction pathway was over represented in all four cattle breeds, while the ECM-receptor interaction pathway was over represented in Girolando and Guzerat breeds, the ABC transporters pathway was over represented only in Holstein breed, and the metabolic pathways was over represented only in Gyr breed. Influence of Feeding Weaned Piglets with Laminaria digitata on the Quality and Nutritional Value of Meat
Laminaria digitata is a novel feedstuff that can be used in pig diets to replace conventional
feedstuffs. However, its resilient cell wall can prevent the monogastric digestive system from accessing
intracellular nutrients. Carbohydrate-active enzyme (CAZyme) supplementation is a putative
solution for this problem, degrading the cell wall during digestion. The objective of this work was to
evaluate the effect of 10% L. digitata feed inclusion and CAZyme supplementation on the meat quality
and nutritional value of weaned piglets. Forty weaned piglets were randomly allocated to four experimental
groups (n = 10): control, LA (10% L. digitata, replacing the control diet), LAR (LA + CAZyme
(0.005% Rovabio® Excel AP)) and LAL (LA + CAZyme (0.01% alginate lyase)) and the trial lasted for
two weeks. The diets had no effect on any zootechnical parameters measured (p > 0.05) and meat
quality traits, except for the pH measured 24 h post-mortem, which was higher in LAL compared
to LA (p = 0.016). Piglets fed with seaweed had a significantly lower n-6/n-3 PUFA ratio compared
to control, to which the higher accumulation of C20:5n-3 (p = 0.001) and C18:4n-3 (p < 0.0001) contributed.
In addition, meat of seaweed-fed piglets was enriched with bromine (Br, p < 0.001) and iodine
(I, p < 0.001) and depicted a higher oxidative stability. This study demonstrates that the nutritional value
of piglets’ meat could be improved by the dietary incorporation of L. digitata, regardless of CAZyme

Enhancing meat quality of weaned piglets with the dietary incorporation of Ulva lactuca and carbohydrases supplementation
Pubmed Free articleThe impact of the dietary incorporation of 7% Ulva lactuca, a green seaweed, on the quality and nutritional value of piglet’s meat was assessed. U. lactuca is rich in nutrients and bioactive compounds but its cell wall is composed of complex polysaccharides that reduce their bioavailability. Therefore, the effect of supplementing piglet diets with exogenous carbohydrases was also assessed here. A total of 40 male weaned piglets were divided into four dietary groups, each with 10 piglets: control (wheat, maize and soybean meal-based diet), UL (7% U. lactuca replacing the control diet), UL +R (UL and 0.005% Rovabio®), and UL +E (UL and 0.01% ulvan lyase). The piglets were fed the diets for 2 weeks. The results showed that incorporating U. lactuca in piglet diets did not influence most of the meat quality traits (P >0.05). However, the incorporation of U. lactuca with the commercial carbohydrase (UL +R) increased the amount of the docosahexaenoic acid (DHA; 22:6n-3) in their meat (P =0.011) compared with the control, by 54%. In addition, meat from piglets fed seaweed diets showed a nearly two-fold increase in iodine contents (P <0.001). Meat tenderness, juiciness and overall acceptability of piglets fed the control diet and the UL diet were lower than those fed the diets containing seaweed and carbohydrases (P <0.001).
