Ground Truth Sampling and LANDSAT Accuracy Assessment
It is noted that the key factor in any accuracy assessment of remote sensing data is the method used for determining the ground truth, independent of the remote sensing data itself. The sampling and accuracy procedures developed for nuclear power plant siting study are described. The purpose of the sampling procedure was to provide data for developing supervised classifications for two study sites and for assessing the accuracy of that and the other procedures used. The purpose of the accuracy assessment was to allow the comparison of the cost and accuracy of various classification procedures as applied to various data types
Induced encystment improves resistance to preservation and storage of Acanthamoeba castellanii
Several conditions that allow the preservation, storage and rapid, efficient recovery of viable Acanthamoeba castellanii organisms were investigated. The viability of trophozoites (as determined by time to confluence) significantly declined over a period of 12 months when stored at −70°C using dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO; 5 or 10%) as cryopreservant. As A. castellanii are naturally capable of encystment, studies were undertaken to determine whether induced encystment might improve the viability of organisms under a number of storage conditions. A. castellanii cysts stored in the presence of Mg2+ at 4°C remained viable over the study period, although time to confluence was increased from approximately 8 days to approximately 24 days over the 12-month period. Storage of cysts at −70°C with DMSO (5 or 10%) or 40% glycerol, but not 80% glycerol as cryopreservants increased their viability over the 12-month study period compared with those stored at room temperature. Continued presence of Mg2+ in medium during storage had no adverse effects and generally improved recovery of viable organisms. The present study demonstrates that A. castellanii can be stored as a non-multiplicative form inexpensively, without a need for cryopreservation, for at least 12 months, but viability is increased by storage at −70°C
Does the Sun shrink with increasing magnetic activity?
It has been demonstrated that frequencies of f-modes can be used to estimate
the solar radius to a good accuracy. These frequencies have been used to study
temporal variations in the solar radius with conflicting results. The variation
in f-mode frequencies is more complicated than what is assumed in these
studies. If a careful analysis is performed then it turns out that there is no
evidence for any variation in the solar radius.Comment: To appear in Astrophys.
Digital image registration method based upon binary boundary maps
A relatively fast method is presented for matching or registering the digital data of imagery from the same ground scene acquired at different times, or from different multispectral images, sensors, or both. It is assumed that the digital images can be registed by using translations and rotations only, that the images are of the same scale, and that little or no distortion exists between images. It is further assumed that by working with several local areas of the image, the rotational effects in the local areas can be neglected. Thus, by treating the misalignments of local areas as translations, it is possible to determine rotational and translational misalignments for a larger portion of the image containing the local areas. This procedure of determining the misalignment and then registering the data according to the misalignment can be repeated until the desired degree of registration is achieved. The method to be presented is based upon the use of binary boundary maps produced from the raw digital imagery rather than the raw digital data
Field-Effect Transistors on Tetracene Single Crystals
We report on the fabrication and electrical characterization of field-effect
transistors at the surface of tetracene single crystals. We find that the
mobility of these transistors reaches the room-temperature value of $0.4 \
cm^2/Vs$. The non-monotonous temperature dependence of the mobility, its weak
gate voltage dependence, as well as the sharpness of the subthreshold slope
confirm the high quality of single-crystal devices. This is due to the
fabrication process that does not substantially affect the crystal quality.Comment: Accepted by Appl. Phys. Lett, tentatively scheduled for publication

Post-AGB stars in the Magellanic Clouds and neutron-capture processes in AGB stars
We explore modifications to the current scenario for the slow neutron capture
process in asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars to account for the Pb deficiency
observed in post-AGB stars of low metallicity ([Fe/H] ~ -1.2) and low initial
mass (~ 1 - 1.5 Msun) in the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds. We calculated
the stellar evolution and nucleosynthesis for a 1.3 Msun star with [Fe/H]=-1.3
and tested different amounts and distributions of protons leading to the
production of the main neutron source within the 13C-pocket and proton
ingestion scenarios. No s-process models can fully reproduce the abundance
patterns observed in the post-AGB stars. When the Pb production is lowered the
abundances of the elements between Eu and Pb, such as Er, Yb, W, and Hf, are
also lowered to below those observed. Neutron-capture processes with neutron
densities intermediate between the s and the rapid neutron-capture processes
may provide a solution to this problem and be a common occurrence in low-mass,
low-metallicity AGB stars.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures. To be published in Astronomy and Astrophysic
