Methane storms as a driver of Titan's dune orientation
Titan's equatorial regions are covered by eastward propagating linear dunes.
This direction is opposite to mean surface winds simulated by Global Climate
Models (GCMs), which are oriented westward at these latitudes, similar to trade
winds on Earth. Different hypotheses have been proposed to address this
apparent contradiction, involving Saturn's gravitational tides, large scale
topography or wind statistics, but none of them can explain a global eastward
dune propagation in the equatorial band. Here we analyse the impact of
equinoctial tropical methane storms developing in the superrotating atmosphere
(i.e. the eastward winds at high altitude) on Titan's dune orientation. Using
mesoscale simulations of convective methane clouds with a GCM wind profile
featuring superrotation, we show that Titan's storms should produce fast
eastward gust fronts above the surface. Such gusts dominate the aeolian
transport, allowing dunes to extend eastward. This analysis therefore suggests
a coupling between superrotation, tropical methane storms and dune formation on
Titan. Furthermore, together with GCM predictions and analogies to some
terrestrial dune fields, this work provides a general framework explaining
several major features of Titan's dunes: linear shape, eastward propagation and
poleward divergence, and implies an equatorial origin of Titan's dune sand.Comment: Published online on Nature Geoscience on 13 April 201
Planar Drawings of Fixed-Mobile Bigraphs
A fixed-mobile bigraph G is a bipartite graph such that the vertices of one
partition set are given with fixed positions in the plane and the mobile
vertices of the other part, together with the edges, must be added to the
drawing. We assume that G is planar and study the problem of finding, for a
given k >= 0, a planar poly-line drawing of G with at most k bends per edge. In
the most general case, we show NP-hardness. For k=0 and under additional
constraints on the positions of the fixed or mobile vertices, we either prove
that the problem is polynomial-time solvable or prove that it belongs to NP.
Finally, we present a polynomial-time testing algorithm for a certain type of
"layered" 1-bend drawings

Upper tropospheric ozone production from lightning NOx-impacted convection: Smoke ingestion case study from the DC3 campaign
©2015. American Geophysical Union. All Rights Reserved. As part of the Deep Convective Cloud and Chemistry (DC3) experiment, the National Science Foundation/National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) Gulfstream-V (GV) and NASA DC-8 research aircraft probed the chemical composition of the inflow and outflow of two convective storms (north storm, NS, south storm, SS) originating in the Colorado region on 22 June 2012, a time when the High Park wildfire was active in the area. A wide range of trace species were measured on board both aircraft including biomass burning (BB) tracers hydrogen cyanide (HCN) and acetonitrile (ACN). Acrolein, a much shorter lived tracer for BB, was also quantified on the GV. The data demonstrated that the NS had ingested fresh smoke from the High Park fire and as a consequence had a higher VOC OH reactivity than the SS. The SS lofted aged fire tracers along with other boundary layer ozone precursors and was more impacted by lightning NOx (LNOx) than the NS. The NCAR master mechanism box model was initialized with measurements made in the outflow of the two storms. The NS and SS were predicted to produce 11 and 14ppbv of O3, respectively, downwind of the storm over 2days. Sensitivity tests revealed that the ozone production potential of the SS was highly dependent on LNOx. Normalized excess mixing ratios, ΔX/ΔCO, for HCN and ACN were determined in both the fire plume and the storm outflow and found to be 7.0±0.5 and 2.3±0.5pptvppbv-1, respectively, and 1.4±0.3pptvppbv-1 for acrolein in the outflow only
Comparative morphological trade-offs between pre- and post-copulatory sexual selection in Giant hissing cockroaches (Tribe: Gromphadorhini)
Sperm competition theory predicts that animals face a trade-off between investment in weaponry
and investment in ejaculate composition. Within the Madagascan giant hissing cockroaches (Tribe
Gromphadorhini) differences in morphology exist that may indicate differing strategies of male-male
competition. We compared relative pronotal horn length using high-resolution X-ray CT scanning data,
relative testes mass, and male-male agonistic behaviour between two species of hissing cockroaches,
Gromphadorhina oblongonota and Aeluropoda insignis. The gross morphology and behaviour of these
two species indicated that G. oblongonota is selected for pre-copulatory mate acquisition and that
A. insignis is selected for post-copulatory sperm competition. We found evidence for a trade-off when
investing in testes mass vs. horn length between the species. The large, aggressive G. oblongonota
follows a strategy of greater investment in weapons at the expense of testes mass while the smaller,
less-aggressive A. insignis invests in relatively greater testes mass and less in pronotal weapon length.
We also found evidence of a trade-off within each species, where individuals invest more heavily in
weapon length at the expense of testes mass. These findings support the predictions of pre- and postcopulatory
competitive investment trade-offs for a relatively understudied Tribe of cockroaches

Tcf7l2 is required for left-right asymmetric differentiation of habenular neurons.
BACKGROUND: Although left-right asymmetries are common features of nervous systems, their developmental bases are largely unknown. In the zebrafish epithalamus, dorsal habenular neurons adopt medial (dHbm) and lateral (dHbl) subnuclear character at very different frequencies on the left and right sides. The left-sided parapineal promotes the elaboration of dHbl character in the left habenula, albeit by an unknown mechanism. Likewise, the genetic pathways acting within habenular neurons to control their asymmetric differentiated character are unknown. RESULTS: In a forward genetic screen for mutations that result in loss of habenular asymmetry, we identified two mutant alleles of tcf7l2, a gene that encodes a transcriptional regulator of Wnt signaling. In tcf7l2 mutants, most neurons on both sides differentiate with dHbl identity. Consequently, the habenulae develop symmetrically, with both sides adopting a pronounced leftward character. Tcf7l2 acts cell automously in nascent equipotential neurons, and on the right side, it promotes dHbm and suppresses dHbl differentiation. On the left, the parapineal prevents this Tcf7l2-dependent process, thereby promoting dHbl differentiation. CONCLUSIONS: Tcf7l2 is essential for lateralized fate selection by habenular neurons that can differentiate along two alternative pathways, thereby leading to major neural circuit asymmetries
Pulmonary hemorrhage syndrome associated with dengue fever, High-resolution computed tomography findings: a case report
Dengue hemorrhagic fever is an acute infectious disease caused by dengue virus. We described the high-resolution CT findings in a 70-year-old male with the disease, which was diagnosed by clinical examination and confirmed by serological methods. High-resolution CT demonstrated bilateral areas of consolidation with air bronchogram and ground glass opacities, as well as small bilateral pleural effusions. Dengue hemorrhagic fever should be considered in the differential diagnosis of diffuse pulmonary hemorrhage
