    Rapid micromixer via ferrofluids

    AbstractPerformances of a micromixer based on ferrofluids are predicted numerically. A permanent magnet is used to induce transient interactive flows between a water-based ferrofluid and water. The external magnetic field causes the ferrofluid to expand significantly and uniformly toward miscible water, associated with a great number of extremely fine fingering structures on the interface in the upstream and downstream regions of the microchannel. These pronounced fingering patterns, which mimic the experimental observations of Wen et al. (2009), increase the mixing interfacial length dramatically. Along with the dominant diffusion effects occurring around the circumferential regions of the fine finger structures, the mixing efficiency increases significantly. The mixing efficiency can be as high as 95% within 2.0 s and a distance of 3.0 mm from the inlet of the mixing channel, when the applied peak magnetic field is 145.8 Oe. The proposed mixing scheme not only provides an excellent mixing, even in simple microchannel, but also can be easily applied to lab-on-a-chip applications with an external permanent magnet

    Added Value of Computed Tomography Virtual Intravascular Endoscopy in the Evaluation of Coronary Arteries with Stents or Plaques

    Coronary computed tomography angiography (CCTA) is a widely used imaging modality for diagnosing coronary artery disease (CAD) but is limited by a high false positive rate when evaluating coronary arteries with stents and heavy calcifications. Virtual intravascular endoscopy (VIE) images generated from CCTA can be used to qualitatively assess the vascular lumen and might be helpful for overcoming this challenge. In this study, one hundred subjects with coronary stents underwent both CCTA and invasive coronary angiography (ICA). A total of 902 vessel segments were analyzed using CCTA and VIE. The vessel segments were first analyzed on CCTA alone. Then, using VIE, the segments were classified qualitatively as either negative or positive for in-stent restenosis (ISR) or CAD. These results were compared, using ICA as the reference, to determine the added diagnostic value of VIE. Of the 902 analyzed vessel segments, CCTA/VIE had sensitivity, specificity, accuracy, positive predictive value, and negative predictive value (shown in %) of 93.9/90.2, 96.2/98.2, 96.0/97.7, 70.0/83.1, and 99.4/99.0, respectively, in diagnosing ISR or CAD, with significantly improved specificity (p = 0.025), accuracy (p = 0.046), and positive predictive value (p = 0.047).     Search for Small Trans-Neptunian Objects by the TAOS Project

    The Taiwan-America Occultation Survey (TAOS) aims to determine the number of small icy bodies in the outer reach of the Solar System by means of stellar occultation. An array of 4 robotic small (D=0.5 m), wide-field (f/1.9) telescopes have been installed at Lulin Observatory in Taiwan to simultaneously monitor some thousand of stars for such rare occultation events. Because a typical occultation event by a TNO a few km across will last for only a fraction of a second, fast photometry is necessary. A special CCD readout scheme has been devised to allow for stellar photometry taken a few times per second. Effective analysis pipelines have been developed to process stellar light curves and to correlate any possible flux changes among all telescopes. A few billion photometric measurements have been collected since the routine survey began in early 2005. Our preliminary result of a very low detection rate suggests a deficit of small TNOs down to a few km size, consistent with the extrapolation of some recent studies of larger (30--100 km) TNOs.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, IAU Symposium 23

    In this paper, we establish the local well-posedness for the Cauchy problem of the simplified version of hydrodynamic flow of nematic liquid crystals (\ref{LLF}) in R3\mathbb R^3 for any initial data (u0,d0)(u_0,d_0) having small Luloc3L^3_{\hbox{uloc}}-norm of (u0,d0)(u_0,\nabla d_0). Here Luloc3(R3)L^3_{\hbox{uloc}}(\mathbb R^3) is the space of uniformly locally L3L^3-integrable functions. For any initial data (u0,d0)(u_0, d_0) with small (u0,d0)L3(R3)\displaystyle |(u_0,\nabla d_0)|_{L^3(\mathbb R^3)}, we show that there exists a unique, global solution to (\ref{LLF}) which is smooth for t>0t>0 and has monotone deceasing L3L^3-energy for t0t\ge 0.Comment: 29 page

    Internal W-emmission and W-exchange Contributions to {\bf B}\to {{\bf D}^{(*)} Decays

    We evaluate external WW-emission, internal WW-emission and WW-exchange contributions to nonleptonic BD()B\to D^{(*)} decays based on the perturbative QCD formalism including Sudakov effects, whose ratio is found to be 1:+0.2:0.03i1:+0.2:0.03i at the amplitude level. We observe that the internal WW-emission contribution is additive to the external WW-emission contribution, and that the WW-exchange contribution is negligible and mainly imaginary, its real part being at least one order of magnitude smaller than the imaginary part. Our predictions are consistent with the CLEO data and with those obtained by the Bauer-Stech-Wirbel method.Comment: 13 pages, Latex, 1 Postscript fil

    Cross-National Differences in Victimization : Disentangling the Impact of Composition and Context

    Varying rates of criminal victimization across countries are assumed to be the outcome of countrylevel structural constraints that determine the supply ofmotivated o¡enders, as well as the differential composition within countries of suitable targets and capable guardianship. However, previous empirical tests of these ‘compositional’ and ‘contextual’ explanations of cross-national di¡erences have been performed upon macro-level crime data due to the unavailability of comparable individual-level data across countries. This limitation has had two important consequences for cross-national crime research. First, micro-/meso-level mechanisms underlying cross-national differences cannot be truly inferred from macro-level data. Secondly, the e¡ects of contextual measures (e.g. income inequality) on crime are uncontrolled for compositional heterogeneity. In this paper, these limitations are overcome by analysing individual-level victimization data across 18 countries from the International CrimeVictims Survey. Results from multi-level analyses on theft and violent victimization indicate that the national level of income inequality is positively related to risk, independent of compositional (i.e. micro- and meso-level) di¡erences. Furthermore, crossnational variation in victimization rates is not only shaped by di¡erences in national context, but also by varying composition. More speci¢cally, countries had higher crime rates the more they consisted of urban residents and regions with lowaverage social cohesion.

    The TNF-Family Receptor DR3 is Essential for Diverse T Cell-Mediated Inflammatory Diseases

    SummaryDR3 (TRAMP, LARD, WSL-1, TNFRSF25) is a death-domain-containing tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-family receptor primarily expressed on T cells. TL1A, the TNF-family ligand for DR3, can costimulate T cells, but the physiological function of TL1A-DR3 interactions in immune responses is not known. Using DR3-deficient mice, we identified DR3 as the receptor responsible for TL1A-induced T cell costimulation and dendritic cells as the likely source for TL1A during T cell activation. Despite its role in costimulation, DR3 was not required for in vivo T cell priming, for polarization into T helper 1 (Th1), Th2, or Th17 effector cell subtypes, or for effective control of infection with Toxoplasma gondii. Instead, DR3 expression was required on T cells for immunopathology, local T cell accumulation, and cytokine production in Experimental Autoimmune Encephalomyelitis (EAE) and allergic lung inflammation, disease models that depend on distinct effector T cell subsets. DR3 could be an attractive therapeutic target for T cell-mediated autoimmune and allergic diseases

    Unraveling the structure-activity-selectivity relationships in furfuryl alcohol photoreforming to H2 and hydrofuroin over ZnxIn2S3+x photocatalysts

    ZnxIn2S3+x has emerged as a promising candidate for alcohol photoreforming based on C-H activation and C-C coupling. However, the underlying structure-activity-selectivity relationships remain unclear. Here we report on ZnxIn2S3+x with varying Zn:In:S ratios for visible-light-driven furfuryl alcohol reforming into H2 and hydrofuroin, a jet fuel precursor, via C-H activation and C-C coupling. S-• radicals are directly identified as the catalytically active sites responsible for C-H activation in furfuryl alcohol, promoting selectivity toward H2 and hydrofuroin. The optimum ZnxIn2S3+x activity derives from a trade-off between enhanced carrier dynamics and diminished visible light absorption as the x value in ZnxIn2S3+x increases. Further, a higher Zn-S:In-S layer ratio prolongs the S-• lifetime in the Zn-S layer, promoting C-H activation and delivering a higher C-C coupling product selectivity.
