Path Integral Monte Carlo Approach to the U(1) Lattice Gauge Theory in (2+1) Dimensions
Path Integral Monte Carlo simulations have been performed for U(1) lattice
gauge theory in (2+1) dimensions on anisotropic lattices. We extractthe static
quark potential, the string tension and the low-lying "glueball" spectrum.The
Euclidean string tension and mass gap decrease exponentially at weakcoupling in
excellent agreement with the predictions of Polyakov and G{\" o}pfert and Mack,
but their magnitudes are five times bigger than predicted. Extrapolations are
made to the extreme anisotropic or Hamiltonian limit, and comparisons are made
with previous estimates obtained in the Hamiltonian formulation.Comment: 12 pages, 16 figure
A developmental cascade model for early adolescent onset substance use: The role of early childhood stress

199688.pdf (publisher's version ) (Open Access)Backgrounds and aims: Despite the link between stress and addictive behavior in adulthood, little is known about how early life stress in families predicts the early emergence of substance use in adolescence. This study tested a developmental cascade model, proposing that early stressful life events and negative parent-child interaction covary, and both disrupt the refinement of inhibitory control, which evolves into problem behavior in middle/late childhood and subsequent substance use exploration in early adolescence. Methods: Data came from the Early Steps Multisite study, a community sample of at-risk families in the metropolitan US areas of Pittsburgh (Pennsylvania), Eugene (Oregon), and Charlottesville (Virginia) with children aged 2 at the start of the study and 14 at the last measurement (N = 364). Structural equation modeling was used to test the proposed model. Results: Early stressful life events and negative parent-child interaction assessed at ages 2 to 5 were negatively related to inhibitory control at ages 7 and 8. Low levels of inhibitory control were prognostic of childhood problem behavior at ages 9 and 10. Finally, late childhood problem behavior was associated with substance use at age 14. Parental drug use was directly related to substance use at age 14. Conclusions: Early life stress may disrupt child inhibitory control, which can cascade into behavioral and peer problem behavior in childhood and, in turn, heighten the risk for early adolescent substance use.9 p
How Do Fermions Behave on a Random Lattice?
Comparing random lattice, naive and Wilson fermions in two dimensional
abelian background gauge field, we show that the doublers suppressed in the
free field case are revived for random lattices in the continuum limit unless

Self-consistent description of nuclear compressional modes
Isoscalar monopole and dipole compressional modes are computed for a variety
of closed-shell nuclei in a relativistic random-phase approximation to three
different parametrizations of the Walecka model with scalar self-interactions.
Particular emphasis is placed on the role of self-consistency which by itself,
and with little else, guarantees the decoupling of the spurious
isoscalar-dipole strength from the physical response and the conservation of
the vector current. A powerful new relation is introduced to quantify the
violation of the vector current in terms of various ground-state form-factors.
For the isoscalar-dipole mode two distinct regions are clearly identified: (i)
a high-energy component that is sensitive to the size of the nucleus and scales
with the compressibility of the model and (ii) a low-energy component that is
insensitivity to the nuclear compressibility. A fairly good description of both
compressional modes is obtained by using a ``soft'' parametrization having a

Significance of thromboxane A2 and prostaglandin I2 in acute necrotizing pancreatitis in rats
Plasma thromboxane concentrations were found to be significantly elevated in acute necrotizing pancreatitis in rats, whereas prostaglandin I2 levels were not. The significance of these alterations was investigated. Pancreatitis was induced by injecting 5% sodium taurocholate into the pancreatic duct. Iloprost (ZK 36374, a stable analog of prostaglandin I2, 25 ng/kg body weight) decreased the mortality rate from 100% to 50%. When treatment with iloprost was combined with simultaneous administration of either Sibelium (flunarizine R 14 950, 0.2 mg/kg body weight) or dazmegrel (UK 38 485, 50 mg/kg body weight) an additional decrease in the mortality rate was recorded. Dazmegrel is a selective thromboxane A2 synthetase inhibitor and flunarizine (a calcium entry blocker) also inhibits the effects of elevated thromboxane A2 levels. With flunarizine and iloprost the mortality rate was 40% (P<0.05); with dazmegrel and iloprost it was 10% (P<0.01). The results of the present study suggest that thromboxane A2 and prostaglandin I2 play a role in the course of acute necrotizing pancreatitis
Density Matrix Renormalisation Group Approach to the Massive Schwinger Model
The massive Schwinger model is studied, using a density matrix
renormalisation group approach to the staggered lattice Hamiltonian version of
the model. Lattice sizes up to 256 sites are calculated, and the estimates in
the continuum limit are almost two orders of magnitude more accurate than
previous calculations. Coleman's picture of `half-asymptotic' particles at
background field theta = pi is confirmed. The predicted phase transition at
finite fermion mass (m/g) is accurately located, and demonstrated to belong in

Ngrams and Engrams: the use of structural and conceptual features to discriminate between English translations of religious texts
In this paper, we present experiments using the Linguistic Inquiry and Word Count (LIWC) program, a âclosed-class keywordâ (CCK) analysis and a âcorrespondence analysisâ (CA) to examine whether the Scientology texts of L. Ron Hubbard are linguistically and conceptually like those of other religions. A KruskalâWallis test comparing the frequencies of LIWC category words in the Scientology texts and the English translations of the texts of five other religions showed that there were eighteen categories for which the Scientology texts differed from the others, and between one and seventeen for the other religions. In the CCK experiment, keywords typical of each religion were found, both by comparing the religious texts with one another and with the Brown corpus of general English. The most typical keywords were looked up in a concordancer and were manually coded with conceptual tags. The set of categories found for the Scientology texts showed little overlap with those found for the others. Our CA experiments produced fairly clear clusters of texts by religion. Scientology texts were seen at one pole on the first factor, with Christian and Islamic texts at the other. It appears that, in several ways, the Scientology texts are dissimilar to the texts of some of the world's major religions
