    Investigation into the efficacy of CO2 lasers for modifying the factors influencing biocompatibility of a polymeric biomaterial in comparison with an F2 excimer laser

    Enhancement of the biocompatibility of a material by means of laser radiation has been amply demonstrated previously. Due to efficient absorption of the energy, short wavelengths and energies per pulse, polymers are usually processed using UV lasers, but the processing of polymers with IR lasers has also been demonstrated previously. In this work a comparative study for the surface modification of nylon 6,6 has been conducted in order to vary the parameters driving biocompatibility (surface topography, hydrophobic reactions, hydrophilic reactions and surface chemistry) using CO2 and excimer lasers. Topographical changes were analysed using white light interferometry which indicated that both laser systems could be implemented for modifying the topography of nylon 6,6. Variations in the surface chemistry were evaluated using EDX and XPS analysis and showed that the O2 increased and decreased for the CO2 and F2 laser irradiated samples, respectively. Modification of the hydrophobic and hydrophilic reactions was quantified by measuring the contact angle, which was found to increase in all instances for both laser systems. It is proposed that the increase in contact angle, especially for the CO2 laser irradiated samples, is due to a change in wetting regime as a result of the surface pattern produced

    No evidence that prefrontal HD-tDCS influences cue-induced food craving.

    This study investigated whether the application of high definition transcranial DC stimulation (HD-tDCS) to the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex reduces cue-induced food craving when combined with food-specific inhibitory control training. Using a within-subjects design, participants (N = 55) received both active and sham HD-tDCS across 2 sessions while completing a Go/No-Go task in which foods were either associated with response inhibition or response execution. Food craving was measured pre and post stimulation using a standardized questionnaire as well as desire to eat ratings for foods associated with both response inhibition and response execution in the training task. Results revealed no effect of HD-tDCS on reducing state food craving or desire to eat. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we were unable to achieve our maximum preplanned sample size or our minimum desired Bayesian evidence strength across all a priori hypotheses; however 6 of the 7 hypotheses converged with moderate or stronger evidence in favor of the null hypothesis over the alternative hypothesis. We discuss the importance of individual differences and provide recommendations for future studies with an emphasis on the importance of cognitive interventions

    Enhancement of the surface properties of a material by means of laser radiation has been amply demonstrated previously. In this work a comparative study for the surface modification of nylon 6,6 has been conducted in order to vary the wettability characteristics using CO2 and excimer lasers. This was done by producing 50 μm spaced (with depths between 1 and 10 μm) trench-like patterns using various laser parameters such as varying the laser power for the CO2 laser and number of pulses for the excimer laser. Topographical changes were analysed using optical microscopy and white light interferometry which indicated that both laser systems can be implemented for modifying the topography of nylon 6,6. Variations in the surface chemistry were evaluated using energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis and showed that the O2 increased by up to 1.5% At. and decreased by up to 1.6% At. for the CO2 and F2 laser patterned samples, respectively. Modification of the wettability characteristics was quantified by measuring the advancing contact angle, which was found to increase in all instances for both laser systems. Emery paper roughened samples were also analysed in the same manner to determine that the topographical pattern played a major role in the wettability characteristics of nylon 6,6. From this, it is proposed that the increase in contact angle for the laser processed samples is due to a mixed intermediate state wetting regime owed to the periodic surface roughness brought about by the laser induced trench-like topographical patterns

    We propose a geometric theory of flavor based on the discrete group (S3)3(S_3)^3, in the context of the minimal supersymmetric standard model. The group treats three objects symmetrically, while making fundamental distinctions between the generations. The top quark is the only heavy quark in the symmetry limit, and the first and second generation squarks are degenerate.     Classification of protein interaction sentences via gaussian processes

    The increase in the availability of protein interaction studies in textual format coupled with the demand for easier access to the key results has lead to a need for text mining solutions. In the text processing pipeline, classification is a key step for extraction of small sections of relevant text. Consequently, for the task of locating protein-protein interaction sentences, we examine the use of a classifier which has rarely been applied to text, the Gaussian processes (GPs). GPs are a non-parametric probabilistic analogue to the more popular support vector machines (SVMs). We find that GPs outperform the SVM and na\"ive Bayes classifiers on binary sentence data, whilst showing equivalent performance on abstract and multiclass sentence corpora. In addition, the lack of the margin parameter, which requires costly tuning, along with the principled multiclass extensions enabled by the probabilistic framework make GPs an appealing alternative worth of further adoption

    Field-induced magnetic transitions in the quasi-two-dimensional heavy-fermion antiferromagnets Ce_{n}RhIn_{3n+2} (n=1 or 2)

    We have measured the field-dependent heat capacity in the tetragonal antiferromagnets CeRhIn5_{5} and Ce2_{2}RhIn8_{8}, both of which have an enhanced value of the electronic specific heat coefficient γ∼400\gamma \sim 400 mJ/mol-Ce K2^{2} above TNT_{N}. For T<TN,T<T_{N}, the specific heat data at zero applied magnetic field are consistent with the existence of an anisotropic spin-density wave opening a gap in the Fermi surface for CeRhIn5,_{5}, while Ce2_{2}RhIn8_{8} shows behavior consistent with a simple antiferromagnetic magnon. From these results, the magnetic structure, in a manner similar to the crystal structure, appears more two-dimensional in CeRhIn5_{5} than in Ce2_{2}RhIn8_{8} where only about 12% of the Fermi surface remains ungapped relative to 92% for Ce2_{2}RhIn8_{8}. When B∣∣c,B||c, both compounds behave in a manner expected for heavy fermion systems as both TNT_{N} and the electronic heat capacity decrease as field is applied. When the field is applied in the tetragonal basal plane (B∣∣aB||a), CeRhIn5_{5} and Ce2_{2}RhIn8_{8} have very similar phase diagrams which contain both first- and second-order field-induced magnetic transitions .Comment: 15 pages, 4 figure

    Digitized continuous magnetic recordings for the August/September 1859 storms from London, UK

    Dedicated scientific measurements of the strength and direction of the Earth's magnetic field began at Greenwich and Kew observatories in London, United Kingdom, in the middle of the nineteenth century. Using advanced techniques for the time, collimated light was focussed onto mirrors mounted on free-swinging magnetized needles which reflected onto photographic paper, allowing continuous analog magnetograms to be recorded. By good fortune, both observatories were in full operation during the so-called Carrington storm in early September 1859 and its precursor storm in late August 1859. Based on digital images of the magnetograms and information from the observatory yearbooks and scientific papers, it is possible to scale the measurements to International System of Units (SI units) and extract quasi-minute cadence spot values. However, due to the magnitude of the storms, the periods of the greatest magnetic field variation were lost as the traces moved off-page. We present the most complete digitized magnetic records to date of the 10-day period from 25 August to 5 September 1859 encompassing the Carrington storm and its lesser recognized precursor on 28 August. We demonstrate the good correlation between observatories and estimate the instantaneous rate of change of the magnetic field

    Flavor at the TeV Scale with Extra Dimensions

    Theories where the Standard Model fields reside on a 3-brane, with a low fundamental cut-off and extra dimensions, provide alternative solutions to the gauge hierarchy problem. However, generating flavor at the TeV scale while avoiding flavor-changing difficulties appears prohibitively difficult at first sight. We argue to the contrary that this picture allows us to lower flavor physics close to the TeV scale. Small Yukawa couplings are generated by ``shining'' badly broken flavor symmetries from distant branes, and flavor and CP-violating processes are adequately suppressed by these symmetries. We further show how the extra dimensions avoid four dimensional disasters associated with light fields charged under flavor. We construct elegant and realistic theories of flavor based on the maximal U(3)^5 flavor symmetry which naturally generate the simultaneous hierarchy of masses and mixing angles. Finally, we introduce a new framework for predictive theories of flavor, where our 3-brane is embedded within highly symmetrical configurations of higher-dimensional branes.Comment: 40 pages, 8 figure

    DLCQ Strings, Twist Fields and One-Loop Correlators on a Permutation Orbifold

    We investigate some aspects of the relationship between matrix string theory and light-cone string field theory by analysing the correspondence between the two-loop thermal partition function of DLCQ strings in flat space and the integrated two-point correlator of twist fields in a symmetric product orbifold conformal field theory at one-loop order. This is carried out by deriving combinatorial expressions for generic twist field correlation functions in permutation orbifolds using the covering surface method, by deriving the one-loop modification of the twist field interaction vertex, and by relating the two-loop finite temperature DLCQ string theory to the theory of Prym varieties for genus two covers of an elliptic curve. The case of bosonic Z(2) orbifolds is worked out explicitly and precise agreement between both amplitudes is found. We use these techniques to derive explicit expressions for Z(2) orbifold spin twist field correlation functions in the Type II and heterotic string theories.Comment: 48 pages, 1 figure; v2: typos correcte
